In the quest to conquer weird noises and vibrations in this Jeep that I’ve owned for about 8 months now, I’m replacing the U-joints in the front driveshaft. I go over the details on doing u-joints in the video I made for the rear driveshaft so in this video I mostly focus on the double cardan joint, the center yoke, and replacing the grease slinger.
In replacing the center yoke, I try to find the ‘secret sauce’ for installing the u-joint on the yoke. It’s not what you’d expect.
I drove around with the front driveshaft off for about two months before I did this job and a lot of the noises up front and the vibrations were gone. With the front driveshaft back installed but with new u-joints, still no noises or vibrations, so I’d call it a success!
Project TJ is the chronicling of working on my 1997 Jeep Wrangler. It's the SE version of a TJ with a 2.5L four cylinder and a standard transmission. At the time of making this video, the Jeep had ~204,300 miles on it.

Great video just a tip on the last ball joint that gave you trouble. Put the outside ones in first then put the enclosed ones in last.

Was the original centering yoke that came out of it the greasable version? I've been told that the greasable and non greasable centering yokes are not interchangeable.

The one I pulled out of my '97 TJ, which I'm pretty certain was original, was non-greasable and that's what I used for the new part (linked in video description). When I was researching doing this, I didn't come across any horror stories about using greasable ones but there were plenty talking about how much of a pain it is to get installed just right so they're actually serviceable and don't bind up. It seemed to me to be way to much work and effort for my needs. I never intended to take TDRS off road constantly or abuse those joints. If anything, I'd probably forget to grease them and the joints would fail early. Going with the original config was what I decided to do and it worked great. Thanks for watching.

Is it required to remove the skid plate? Great video btw...
@CarbonsDIYGarage
@CarbonsDIYGarage 2 ай бұрын
Required? I don't think so - I'm pretty sure there are videos out there showing people doing it with the t-case on. However there's a lot of awkward hand positioning and it'll take a bit longer (and more frustration) since you'll have to reach back to the back of the driveshaft from the front. It'll probably be harder to get it back on and torqued properly. If you can get the skid plate down semi-easily, I'd recommend it. But is it required - no. Worst case, try it with the skid plate up and see how it goes. Hope that helps and good luck. Thanks for watching, Tony.

Well, another great video Ed! Glad you keep making TDSR better! Labor of love lol. Hey, when you have time, check out my u-joint video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aq9kgMtny7SXpGg.html. The part at the end you had the fight with was buttery smooth on mine. I took a different approach getting that last joint in. It begins at min 7 : 15. I know you are already finished but would like to know your thoughts. Keep up the great work!

Steve! KZfaq never told me about your comment and I just happened to see it today. I believe you’ve replaced that front driveshaft now but how well did that self-balance setup last? Man, I’m sure I watched your video before I did my front u-joints but I sure wish I’d have paid closer attention. Your method on that yoke is WAY easier than mine.

@@CarbonsDIYGarage The balanced driveshaft I did actually worked great. I drove it many thousand miles. Mine was terrible before I balanced it. I don't really know if it was worth the small amount of improvement to replace it with the new one. It is a little smoother and looks pretty lol.
