Working on fixing rusted/sagging cab mounts and sharing what I learned in the process.
As many people have commented, ideally you would weld the washer to the frame brackets to prevent the cab from lifting. One commenter had a great idea to put a second washer under the frame bracket, this should work pretty slick and eliminate the need to weld. I don't have a long term update as I sold the truck about a year after the repair. I miss it badly.
You WON'T find these washers at Ace/True Value/Home Depot/Menards etc. You must go to a commercial metal supply shop, a place that sells to contractors, does fabrication etc. Almost all are open to the public, you'll find them in larger cities in industrial park type areas. Google "industrial metal supply" and see what is near you, then call ahead.

Weld a washer to the flush bolt, then a nut to the washer. Works, I've removed many flush broken bolts that way, sometimes yah go thru a few nuts before you get one to hold good. LOL I went thru about a box of nuts to get the really rusted broken U bolts out of my C3 Corvette axle stubs, one even snapped off after welding a nut and was recess a bit but a half dozen nuts later she came out.

You can access the body mount bolts through the cab. There are metal plates snapped into an access hole, then sealed with seam sealer. Just remove the seam sealer then use a pry tool and carefully pry up the cover. Good the put knocker-loose on them. I had the drill out a busted bolt from inside the cab. In the video, even if the bolt is broken/sawed flush, if you are a good welder, you can weld a nut to the bolt by welding inside the nut to the bolt. In addition, the heat from welding will help break the bolt free.

Great info. Nice, simple and right to the point explanation. We just rebuilt the motor in our 96 single cab Chevy and did some crazy mods to it, it's a beast. We hook up to our neighbor's trucks just for fun and drag them around like rag dolls LoL.. The sad part is where we live road salt will eat the crap out of your vehicle in no time, so cab mounts are due. I'm gonna tackle them soon and watching your video really gave me a good perspective of what I'm getting into... Thanks for the great advice...

You can get to the other side of those bolts if you pull the carpet can pull the covers
@big6ft625
@big6ft625 7 жыл бұрын
Good point Steve, that is true. Once you access the other side, do you have any tricks for getting the bolt out from that side? I assumed I'd have more room and options from the outside than from inside the cab. I worried after all the work of pulling the bench seat and carpet etc, I'd be left with even less room to weld on a nut or something to get enough purchase on the exposed bolt to get it out. I'm sure others who find this video would appreciate any tips you have for getting the bolts out from the inside.

@lisab3396

Loved the video. However, one problem seemed to stand out. If you had to use a large flat washer on the top of the bracket to prevent the bushing falling through and thus the cab sagging issue. Surely you should have placed another washer under the bracket prior to installing the lower bushing. Not installing a lower washer would allow the lower bushing to simply slip upwards through the bracket hole and therefor the whole repair would be redundant. I and I am sure many others would like to have an update from you.

@@joegirton2178 there's a nut and bolt supply place in my town. The hole in the center of the washer was approximately 2" and the outside was bigger than the amount of rust I had on my frame mount. It was about $20 for 4 of those washers but I only had to repair the cab mounts closest to the box.

Besides gravity, what prevents the bottom bushings from going up through the frame brackets?
@big6ft625
@big6ft625 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, this is a good point. With this type of repair, while new condition bushings are stiffer and may provide some additional resistance of pulling up through the bracket, technically nothing is preventing it from happening. However anyone with this problem is driving around now with nothing preventing this either. This repair only restores cab hight/alignment, it DOES NOT repair frame brackets to OEM condition. If someone is looking to restore frame brackets to OEM functionality, they should of course weld the washer to the frame bracket. Anyone expecting to use their truck in a way that will result in forces trying to pull the cab off the frame should absolutely do that.

@Phillip Aurthur yes, it's worth a shot. I can't recall if there is any reason. A washer wouldn't fit on the bottom too. Should be enough room (threads) on the bolt I'd think.

a washer for a 1 and 7/8" bolt, If I remember correctly it has a 2" diameter hole in the middle. I had to go to my local commercial metal supply place, they won't have them at a hardware store. I got them at a commercial metal supply house. They sell metal to business but are open to the public. Look up metal supply in the nearest big city. You won't find them at home depot or menards or hardware store. This place had a big bin of them in stock so they must be pretty common in construction and stuff.

I had to go to an industrial metal supply shop. The kind that sells big sheets of metal to business and has some fab shop area etc. This one is open to the public, as I assume most are but it doesn't have a normal store front. It was in an industrial park and if you drove by looks like an office attached to a warehouse, google metal supply in your area and look for industrial/business metal supply. You won't find those washers at the hardware store (As you've probably already figured out). I actually originally went to have them fab up 4 plates for me with 2" holes, and the shop guy said, "why don't you just by four of these washers, it would be cheaper" and he took me over to their warehouse and down an isle of boxes and reached in a box full of these things and pulled out four for me. I was like "cool!"

The mount and bushings everything flew out onto the Interstate I knew I ran over something not tell the driveshaft was rubbing did I discover what had happened. I think that will work just have to make or buy new plates and rubber. Dealer says 100 plus each for assembly there is 6 total. I am brainstorming a way to just fab all new mounting system for the cab using large washers and stacked slices of tires as the rubber bushings. The truck may just be a total loss of my $1500. Oh well it got me to work a handful of times. pulling truck or a Farm Sleeper Drag Race Truck balls out?

OEM hardware can be found at LMC Truck. If you want poly bushing instead of OEM rubber, I think I found aftermarket polyurethane bushing sets (no hardware) at Summit Racing? Or just google "Chevy C/K body bushing kit polyurethane" and see what comes up. Also check RockAuto.com, I seem to recall having a good bushing set, and maybe hardware? (I can't remember)
