Replacing Stk power amplifier in Yamaha R-300 using Yuan-Jing TDA7293 modules

Replacing the STK power pack with the Yuan-Jing TDA 7293 modules available through parts express. Most modern STK manufacturing is crummy, so if you're tired of the receiver blowing up, give this a try. Outputs the same power, perhaps a smidgen less gain.

That's a good example of restoration where engineering of the day allowed space for the modification with at least the same, or better quality result, with reliability as well. I have an Akai AM U03 unit, which needs the same work, (it uses the STK 0040 II, and STK 3042), but I'll firstly try and get the original IC's. My supplier has the STK 0050 II, which is just a higher voltage rating than the STK 0040 II. Thanks for the post. It means I can restore it with confidence.

The original sanyo STK modules sounded phenomenal. unfortunately manufacturers never fitted adequate cooling too them and they ultimately burned out after a couple of years, the new STK fakes are not worth bothering with, its much better to replace them and fit a good quality class d circuit or high end toshiba TDA.

i love it when people figure out fixes like this. Theres a guy online that has designed replacement STK0050 and 0080's from all new parts you can buy from mouser. he even designed custom PCB's for them. and his prices are very good. only $10 for a pair of boards. i plan on using them to replace the STK0080's in my Fisher CA-800

I have used the TDA7293 to replace STC modules in a number of amplifiers. They are OK in most with 4 ohms but only with programme inputs. Everything gets very hot with sine wave testing, in fact exactly as it did with the STCs. Most domestic amplifiers are under sinked and many give ratings for 6 ohms...who makes 6 ohm speakers? very few. The TDA7293 also sounds better than the STC and somewhat more reliable. PS Thank goodness you don't play music while making your vids!!

@JordanPier

Look up the datasheet on your stk, look at the pinout. Usually if the output pins aren't centering at zero and your power supplies are good then the device is bad

Jordan Pier Thank you for the swift reply ! The chip tests out as bad but luckily i have an exact chip laying around :) The akai am a2 rails run quite hot at 40volts pushing the stk unit to its limit. So i asume this will be a returning problem..

I’m glad I stumbled across this video as I’m just about to do the same to my R-300. Question, and this is for you Jordan or anyone else. You removed the emitter resistors from the board as your TDA7293 had emitter resistors on it. I’m using a TDA7294 and using a very common board that is used with these. They do not have a built in emitter resistor and I see that most boards for the 7294 don’t. I see that people hook up their speaker direct to the outputs of these boards. So, should I too remove the emitter resistors? I’m guessing they’re not needed???
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 11 ай бұрын
I would look at the tda7294 datasheet and see if they have an example circuit. If thr example shows emitter resistors, leave them in and wire the output accordingly
@danhorton6182
@danhorton6182 11 ай бұрын
@@JordanPier thank you for the suggestion, I did, but the thing is I also looked at the data sheet for the 7293 and in the example circuit for that I didn’t see any emitter resistor for that device either. Which is weird seeing they were on your board. Also weird they call it an emitter resistor considering both devices actually have a mosfet output stage.

Hi Jordan, enjoyed your videos. I am installing two TDA7294 bds. in a Wersi organ power chassis. It has two inputs that went into the old OM961 amp. modules, inverting and non-inverting. Which input should I connect to the TDA7294 circuit bd? I am thinking the non-inverting? And, it has a bootstrap wire, that also went into the OM961. Do I use the bootstrap? Thank you, Jack.
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 3 жыл бұрын
I would use the non inverting input Not sure if you would need the bootstrap. Most boards have it built in and just take a rail voltage through a circuit. If you don't get any sound upon power up but the amp centers then you might need the bootstrap.

Transistors and stuff like that, but right now, we'll stick just to transistors... but how well do they survive outdoors??? I know where there's a few old devices just laying around rotting. I've considered going out and harvesting some parts off of them. Oh yeah, how about power transformers?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 2 жыл бұрын
Outdoors, bad. The problem primarily is that moisture accumulates on the leads of the transistors and begins to corrode them. The corrosion propagates up into the transistor body, breaking the hermetic seal and damaging the intermals. Moisture can build up in the transformer housing a compromise the enamel on the windings. You can bake one at a low temperature in the oven, like 120-150 degrees Fahrenheit (if your oven allows for a low setting) for an hour or two to get the moisture to burn off.
