Replacing Swingarm Bearings Honda CB750 | New Swing Arm Bushings Guide | Project Bike | Part 21
In this Honda CB750K project bike episode, I replace the worn-out swingarm bushes on my CB750 project bike. I am building this bike to be a road-going runner, not a full restoration, but I could tell by the excessive play in the swinging arm that these bushings were worn out.

When I replaced the wheel after getting new tyres I noticed that there was a lot of play in the swingarm. I was already concerned about the head bearings so it was a bit of a setback when I spotted this as well. I have not changed the bushes in a swingarm before so I wasn’t fully sure how I would do it.
Having done some research I found out that it was a known issue with CB750’s which seem to wear out their bearings. The Honda design seems quite good with a bush, a felt washer then a top hat style washer to keep dirt out. Earlier bikes have grease nipples at the end of the swingarm spindle, with later bikes having a grease nipple in the body of the swingarm.
The accepted change is to fit one piece per side bronze/brass bushes. These are easier to fit and a lot cheaper than the original parts.
Having stripped the swingarm out, I proceeded to drive the bushes out using a long steel drift. They do take some getting out, but the new bushes went in quite easily. Especially as I had put them in the freezer for a little while before fitting them.
I also noticed that the washers that go each side of the swingarm were missing, which were part of the problem, so I sourced new parts and fitted them.

I have a 73 that needs steering bearings. The extended forks make it a bit tougher to get up high enough to even change tires but it has to be done. Swing arm bushings after that. Great instructional videos, keep up the good work!

Thanks Rick. I am chuffed if you are finding our videos useful. I have never had a bike with extended forks, or to be correct when I have, I have changed them back to stock before I got the bike running. Most bikes from the States always seemed to come with extended fork, at least the ones I was interested in :) Take care.

Great job. I had plastic bushings in my cb750f. So I swapped them over to the brass ones like you have used. 👍👍

very useful, fought to get the first bush out , second came out very easily using old socket on an extension just the right size throught the frame , the spindle is not that tight though in the new bushes ???? is it supposed to be tight or is it worn out ??? any help appreciated

I would measure everything before condemning the spindle. Things can get manufactured wrong in the aftermarket replacement world. If you can feel any play with the spindle in bush then something will not be quite right, but ones mans play is another ones clearance. Good luck.

Heat the swing arm and freeze the Swing Arm Bushings Guide without using a hammer. :)

They still seemed like they needed the hammer unfortunately, it's a very tight fit! I'm a big fan of the old heat and freeze method though. Cheers!
