Replacing The Battery Pack On A Tesla Model 3 Costs More Than You Think

As more and more electric vehicles enter the consumer market, the actual cost of owning an EV remains somewhat inscrutable. Considering the average higher cost associated with buying an EV, some consumers are discovering that even without the cost of gasoline, EVs may not be quite the bargain they're so often marketed as. Now, it seems like there's yet another hidden fee associated with purchasing a Tesla Model 3: replacing the battery. Since the vehicle runs on electricity, it's a pretty important aspect of the car. But how much will it actually run you? Unfortunately, replacing the battery pack on a Tesla Model 3 costs more than you think.

There is a thing called the lid on a Tesla battery. Once you open it there are several modules depending on model, usually about 16 modules. No entire battery dies at once, usually a cell or few inside the module does. The most sane reasonable way to fix it would be to pay a couple hundred dollars for a low millage used module. It's like if a cracked manifold cost $1000 to replace and the dealership sells you an entire engine for $10,000. Replace what is broken, check the condition of the other packs and keep on driving. 500,000 miles can be done on a Tesla battery. 200-300K is common.

That's a fascinting claim. What are you basing that on? When I was weighing my Tesla purchase (2019), I did at least *consider* an Ioniq, despite the distasteful fact that it would have meant supporting a company that also produces PBVs(*). The draw? At the time, their batteries had a life-of-vehicle-ownership warranty. Not to be sneezed at, right? But they had no range, to speak of, so I happily went with the EV-only manufacterer, and the vastly superior car. But are you saying the Ioniq battery warranty has changed since then? That'd seemingly make them even less appealing. (*) pollution-based-vehicles

How often does a pack need to be replaced? Yes, batteries are expensive, but if it's an issue for only 0.2% of EV owners why even mention it? I mean, is it more often than engine replacements on ICE vehicles? I've had more than a few acquaintances that needed to have engines replaced in near new cars/trucks. While EV ownership is still comparatively rare, I do follow EV news pretty closely. I've not heard of anyone needing a battery replacement for any models of EVs...except for Chevy Bolt owners.
@russellthorburn9297

I've both heard of and personally experienced some pretty awful battery degradation, including replacement of the packs, but that was on older models of the Nissan Leaf (e.g. 60% of capacity with 40k miles driven) that had no battery management system at all unless you count the crappy fan. Fortunately, EV manufacturers like TESLA have solved that issue and owners can expect their packs to have less than 10% degradation over 150k miles driven.

I'd love to see a direct comparison with ICE vehicles. For example: - How much does it cost to replace/maintain the transmission for the same time period? (An EV has no transmission to replace or maintain.) - How much does it cost to replace/maintain the engine for the same time period? (EV engines are nearly immortal compared to ICE engines.) - How much does it cost to replace/maintain the brake system for the same time period? (On an EV, depending on driving habits, the "regular brakes" are used FAR less often and therefore last far longer. - How much is saved on gas prices over the same distances driven? At current gas prices, driving an ICE for 100,000 miles and getting 40 MPG would cost about $12,500. In my Tesla, over the same distance, I'd end up paying about $4,500 (averaging about 1 mile for every 250 watt hours at 18 cents per kWh.). Obviously, if one spends all one's time charging at an expensive supercharger the price will increase but the data does not support that. More than 90% of the time, EV drivers charge at home where the price of charging is MUCH lower than at a supercharger. Also, I actually get closer to 1 mile for every 195 watt hours and the average is more like 220 watt hours so I'm being very conservative with my numbers in favour of the ICE's. - How much does it cost to get SMOG certification for registration over that period of time? (not required for an EV) Additionally, if one examines real world data rather than the anecdotal data that is usually quoted, one finds that in EV's with proper battery management systems (i.e. NOT a 2014 Nissan Leaf which has no discernable battery management system at all), battery degradation is minimal compared to the distances driven. Studies show typical degradation of less than 10% over 150,000 miles. That being said, if the driver abuses the EV (e..g. drives it to 0% and charges it to 100% time and again even though the manual says not to do that) then the driver will get what they deserve.

EVs do not depreciate faster than gas cars. All EVs sold in the US come with at least 100,000 mile or 8 year warranty on the battery. Replacing the engine on a similar grade of gas car, say a BMW 3 series, is not that far away from replacing an EV battery. Of course, in both cases a car that is treated well at all won't have a drive system failure until long after that. In most EVs the batteries is expected to last the life of the car. Most EVs besides Tesla have batteries made of modules that can be individually repaired or replaced.
