My BF changed the gasket on my car, WITH YOUR INSTRUCTIONS. in less than 1 hour. I only helped with cleaning and keeping bolts/screws straight and of course the harness. THANK YOU ZILLIONS FOR DOING THIS VIDEO !!!!!!!!!! You saved this Senior some $s, that had to be used for food and Cardiologist.

I have an 02 as well with 164K miles and I recently got done changing my own valve cover gasket after I recently checked the oil and it was showing no oil on the dipstick only 3000 miles since the last oil change. I've also been noticing dried oil seeping out from the edge of the cover. Mine was a bit of a nightmare after I got the valve cover off. The gasket was mostly solidified, especially around the spark plug housing. Some pieces broke off and almost fell into the engine, but I was satisfied I was able to do this myself and save some money

Just did this with my wife's 2003 Camry. Thanks for the video, it was quite helpful... although I wish I had remembered to disconnect the battery. Ended up touching some no no parts of the alternator to some other part of the car that blew the alternator fuse. THAT is a pain in the ass to replace.

Thanks for the share. The only thing I'm doing different is to remove that piece of metal from the cover that breaks off with a small cut off wheel as it is known to break causing issues. Other than that it looks good. Again thanks.

Dude, this video is an incredible help!!! Thank you for taking the time to record it as you worked on it. My 2006 Camry just hit 200K, and I thought that it might be coming to an end with the oil leak that I have. But when you said you had 265K, I almost lost it! That's very encouraging, because I love that car. I don't think I'll buy anything other than a Toyota again.

Excellent job! mechanical work.. and cleaning!! update don't need to use gasket anymore it only causes more problems.. silicones will not adhere and stick to the gasket.. Toyota is now using an advanced chemistry compound you can buy from permatex it's called right stuff and it's all you use you don't use the rubber gasket anymore because it will disintegrate again and risk falling in your engine. plus it's going to leak again especially if you use it by itself or even if you use silicone with it it will leak eventually and at least 60,000 miles I've been through this four times already with the 2.4 + don't bother doing this job unless you replace the PCV valve and hose.. part of the blowout is from a defective PCV valve..and just because your PCV valve makes noise when you shake it back and forth doesn't mean it's good most of them are defective as well PCV valve on these Toyota's is only good for about 60,000 miles.. if this job is never done the valve gasket will eventually decay and fall into the engine and can ruin the engine..if you do this job using a valve cover gasket your results will be poor long term

I just did my 2004 Camry that also has about 266,000 miles on it. I have the Chilton manual and this video made following that much easier than would've otherwise been the case........................A few things........someone asked about putting RTV sealant near the timing chain cover to cylinder head joint -- Chilton says to that and when I inspected the surface that the valve cover would mate up to, I could see there had been a dab of sealant on that spot when it left the factory..............Adrian....I had a lot of baked on gasket that was hard to get off, much more than you, I was able to get it off....I tried carb cleaner to no effect but left it wet while I cleaned up the valve cover.......I got some plastic razor blades from NAPA and with patience was able to scrape the hard plastic like stuff off....I don't know if the carb soaking made a difference and it may've come off without that...I stuffed some rags into the ares where I scraped to prevent anything from falling into the engine....Chilton also has the torque specs on the cover bolts at 96 inch pounds,,,,just as several have stated............Thanks Adrian,,,very helpful.

Yeah. I have to agree with SATruth's assertion. This is well within any real man's repertoire and skill set. I can understand a much more complicated endeavor like changing out a clutch, tranny, timing chain, and such. But every guy should at least understand the fundamentals and basics of car mechanics. A project like this specifically is definitely more intermediate; beyond basic maintenance like changing brakes, tires, etc. but still should be able to easily be done. As I said above, a man should surely learn the fundamentals of mechanics. Then when it comes time to apply them, all you need to do is jump online or look in a Manual like Haynes to get the specifics of the job for the vehicle you're working on (bolt sizes, exact tools needed, common issues that arise, and even little tips and tricks). While I wouldn't call myself a Professional, I'd say my skills and the amount of vehicles I've busted my knuckles wrenching on have earned me the right to call myself a mechanic. Even if I never went to school or any program for it; I'm self taught mostly. Having learned by driving rust buckets and cheap cars growing up; not having the money to afford a shop so it was learn to fix it on your own or you'd be walking. I feel spoiled now with the internet and KZfaq - especially with access right from our phones. I didn't have that when I was learning; stranded on the side of the road. Lol.

It was easier to remove the valve cover for me when I disconnected all the connections to the alternator that and other connections as part of that left side harness. Cover came off just fine. I got my stuff from Toyota for gasket and sealant. A couple of dabs on the front and back of the timing chain area.

For those asking for what a local mechanic would charge for replacing a leaking valve cover gasket, it was $100 in Florida (near Orlando). Didn't get it done yet. He mentioned 3 other things wrong with my 2002 Camry totaling $740 when I took it in for an oil change and tire rotation. Annoying when they do that and makes me more paranoid than trusting unfortunately. I used to trust this place but went downhill after some personnel changes. Completely devoid of customers now.

Nice vid. Wow...that's a clean engine for 265k. You did a great detailed job of cleaning up the old gasket. The beauty of doing it yourself. So I did similar. I ended up removing the alternator cables, because that made so much more room to get the valve cover gasket on towards the passenger side. All was good for 1 month, probably just a few hundred miles...then oil started to spray out the back corner near the air box. What do you guys think? I changed out the PCV valve, but I'm thinking maybe the gasket fell off inwards and got crushed? I sure don't see the gasket hanging on the outside. I think I just need to pull it again and see if the gasket is crushed somewhere. This is frustrating...a simple job gone wrong. Btw I did use a Toyota gasket.

I thought the video was very well done. I watched this not so much for the valve cover gasket, but the metal part that goes on the underside of the valve cover that you see when you add oil to the motor. I just bought a 2002 Camry and have a slight ticking sound coming from the motor. I just did the first oil change (245,000 km) and saw that piece is ripped and jagged. My guess is it was pushed down, came into contact with the moving parts below it and shredded. Now I know how to remove the top end and replace that metal part (gasket?) and I should probably change the valve cover gasket while I’m at it? There is no leakage at the valve cover but this should be done if I have to remove the valve cover? If not, I’ll leave it alone. Thanks so much for posting this and helping out!

Do you need to drain the oil before doing this? You checked the oil afterwards, so I'm guessing its not necessary. Also, the tightening of the bolts at the end, is that just "as tight as you can get it with your man hands?" or what? My Camry, just over 200k, has pushed much more oil out than yours, as my aluminum cover is stained with junk and the mat attached to the hood is saturated above the block. I've ordered the gasket cover and hoping a replacement will solve the issue. Also smokes out of the tail pipe, most noticeably after cranking.

@adrianrog
@adrianrog 9 жыл бұрын
muhanned attab I'm not a mechanic, but this valve cover gasket can't let antifreeze into your engine. I think a head gasket is more likely the cause. The good news is that you can inspect the cylinders for cracks when you pull the head off to replace the head gasket. Good luck, hopefully it's just the head gasket, and hopefully it's not stripped head bolts that caused the gasket to fail. I think that's pretty common on these motors.
@rickalders

If you have coolant in the spark plug wells, you may have stripped head bolt threads. That is a common problem with these engines and causes the exact symptoms you're describing.

I'm looking for a part replacement, along with the valve cover bolts in the middle of the cover.

The mechanic said this needed to be replaced. Where do I look to see if it's leaking?
@D0yjvdf

And what did you use to clean it?
@adrianrog
@adrianrog 8 жыл бұрын
+dan the valve cover is the part I spend so much time removing. oil leaks between that and and the part below it. I just used engine degreaser to clean it.

I realize this is way late of a reply but usually it's the passenger side area in the front of the valve cover that leaks. It can definitely leak other places around but that is what is most common.

MikeTheITGuy Thanks. I should have done this a long time ago. I kept putting it off because I thought it was going to be a huge pain. Turns out it was pretty easy. It took just over an hour. I could probably do it again in 30 minutes.

adrianrog It's easy on a 4 cylinder. On a V6 it takes at least 2-3 hours, and that's having done it before.

+brs “Brsrafal” rafal I had the leak for years before it got bad enough for me to fix it. If it's a minor leak, I'd personally leave it alone, but that's up to you. It's a fairly easy fix if you have a few free hours.

at 20:33, you should have disconnected the alternator cables and moved them out of the way before you tried to put the valve cover on, this would have saved yourself a lot of time and hassle and you wouldn't need your wife's help.

@adrianrog
@adrianrog 9 жыл бұрын
Hunter Tinsley That's correct, you don't need to remove any oil. 99.9% of your oil will drain into the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. Just try to keep dirt out when you have the valve cover off and you should be fine.

+Dave DiTrapani My thought was that there was nothing but a gasket when I removed the valve cover, so that's all I put back. Probably a little in the corners wouldn't hurt, but I'm no mechanic.

A tiny amount of RTV should be applied to the points where the timing cover and head meet. Let it sit for about 10 minutes then assemble. I like gray RTV by Permatex. It most closely matches the OEM stuff. Toyota FIPG (formed in place gasket) is also good but $10+ a tube.

Man it’s an easy job , you make it look so hard be cleaning over and over , you need to clean the edge with degreaser and be careful to not to not drop nothing in the head .... clean the edge and put little seals on the corner and the seal will cover the rest .... shishhhhhhhhh what would you do if you don a head gasket dam it will take you a year to finish it
