Love this quilt design. My father, who is an artist, told me a long time ago to always add white or black, if you have a lot of color. This helps your eyes rest.

My grandmother would make string blocks and had a bushel basket full of them at all times. She always left the paper on until it was time to sew them together that way they didn't stretch out of shape. Some of those blocks might not make it into a quilt for years but with the paper they didn't even need to be pressed, they were ready to go! String quilts are so fun to make and a great way to use up our bits and scraps.

This will have to be one of my favorites ... especially the ending where you show the different patterns that can be made with these blocks. Also, I saw where the question was ask about using the same center strip, but never heard a clear answer ... If you use the same center strip, that is what makes your squares, 'larger outlined squares' and puts them 'on point'. As always, you two make a great pair ... loved this tutorial!

I stay stitch round the edge within the seam allowance before removing the papers. This means that the bias isn’t an issue when handling the blocks. Good call about using a unifying strip down the middle.

I love this "live" session, even though I watched it later. Thanks for "going mobile" and showing us a close-up, so I could see that even the white "centre" lines don't always match up exactly. From far away, they look like they match. "Get your nose out of your quilt" is always a good motto. It's gorgeous the improv way that it is... and that's what we want for our quilts! (although if you want it to really match at the white centres/corners, you can fold and press the initial white strip in half lengthwise, and ensure the fold line is right in the corner of the paper). Thanks MSQC team for a great video tutorial !! ~Diana from Toronto

My husband died a year ago on February 7, 2020. What with the lock downs of businesses and such, I still have all his clothes. I have been toying with the idea of creating a Memory Quilt of his shirts, slacks and ties. This quilt idea plus the Solar Flare idea would give a quilt an Xs and Os vibe, which would reflect the love we had for each other.

Jenny and Misti, when I was about 12 or14 years old I helped my paternal grandmother make a string quilt, I’m 72 now. We cut 6” squares from the newspaper and that was our foundation. I still have some of those. Also,a few years later while messing with her sewing things I discovered some childrens dress and bodice paper patterns on newspaper dated December 26,1944.I can only imagine that my grandmother had been gifted some fabric and since it was the day after Christmas she decided to make a dress or jumper with it 40:19 and freehandedly cut her pattern from this paper. Thank you for letting me share.

I've watched this vid a number of times, and it never gets old. String quilts are so much fun to make! And, as we all know, quilters spend a lot of $$$ on fabric. Make your scraps work for you, and you don't have to start with a ten inch foundation paper square. Make them any size you want. They don't have to be masterpieces; they make great utility quilts. I've got a TON of scraps; time for me to get busy. MSQC ROCKS! ❤

We stopped in Hamilton last year (were from Oregon) in January and did the whole MSQC experience in the cold...but Jenny was not there😕. Big disappointment. But I left a nice pile of money there, went to all the shops, and hubby had long naps in the hubby shop. I would love to go to one of Jenny’s retreats. Such a wonderful family. I'm so glad that you use the center white strip to separate the patterns formed by the blocks. I've seen so many scrap quilts that have no unifying pattern to them and each separate block ends up disappearing into a mish-mash of color which to me is visually confusing. My first reaction on seeing the quilt was that you had done the colored squares and then sashed the blocks in white which I really liked. Then I realized that it was a center stripe of white coming together at the corners to form the dividing frame work. So much easier to construct that way. Thanks so for the idea.
