We have a new tradition here at Missouri Star: Triple Play! Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own, unique take on a specific block or technique. This week these talented Doan ladies are demonstrating three new ways to use the magnificent Circle Magic templates!
Jenny used the large Circle Magic template, fusible batting, and "Timber Gnomies" 10" Squares by Shelly Cominsky for Henry Glass
Misty also used the large Circle Magic template and fusible batting, but uses a slightly different technique to sew her blocks. Her fabric is "Homemade" Charm Packs by Tula Pink for FreeSpirit Fabrics and "Cut Once Night" Yardage from the same collection.
Natalie used the small Circle Magic template, fusible batting, and "Olive Branch" Single Scoops (charms) by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts for Andover Fabric.
As always, each of these projects is quick, easy, and fun!

This looks like fun! Also a tip for sewing circles. Shorten your stitch length just a little bit, it helps get the curves to be more smooth.

When I was growing up my brother and sisters were never allowed to just sit and watch tv. In the fall when we got our new school clothes we got to buy supplies to make a project. These projects were meant to be a gift for one of our siblings. My mom and grandmother taught us different crafts. I learned to knit, sew, embroider, quilting and counted cross stitch.

I did this with scrap denim jeans years ago and used a cd as my template. Then I used scrap fabric cut them into squares to fit inside the circle and sewed them together with a decorative stitch. This is cool and so many ideas!

Ladies, Thank you so very much for your amazing projects! I love love love them! I started teaching a single mom in Feb 2022,, former military, with five children. The three middle children are adopted siblings, ages are .... 18 and she is off to college, 16 yr old amazing young man, 13 yr adorable young man, two cutest young ladies. We have now acquired enough machines for all!!! No sewing experience for any of them!! I am so impressed and thrilled whit what they have accomplishes in 8 months. For the most part, we have been using fabric from my stash!! So thankful it is going to an amazing family. I am almost 73 and have been sewing for 63 years. The family known as the "Sunshine Sewers" would love useing these tools. Great project for next year!! Also .... They bring great joy to my heart.

Triple play is one of my favorite too. It’s great to see another perspective. Back in the day I when I was still working I held many training classes. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat”, was one of my infamous expressions. I think it was pretty classy of you Missy to give credit for your method to the gal that does patterns. Very nice.

I made a picnic quilt with repurposed jeans using the magic circle. I didn’ use two layer, jeans are too thick. On the wrong side of jean circle, I added a square of batting and a small square of cute fabrics. Then I joined the circle like the women did. My Granddaughters have enjoyed having the picnic blanket since Spring. Misty, I have been using your method of sewing first and then cut all three at once. I have seen a lot of magic circle quilts. Your is the most amazing.

My whole family does aikido & I've saved all of our retired outfits. They are a heavy denim weight, white cotton. I think I need to throw them in some dye & make this quilt using the last technique. We're doing so many outdoor gatherings these days, that would be a great quilt to throw down on the sometimes-damp ground. I just love it when several ideas come together. And Jenny - be careful of yourself! We need you!!!

First, Jenny.....I hope you'll continue This Tiple Play Tutorial EVERY THREE weeks is FAST becoming one of my FAVORITE VIDEO TUTORIALS to wait for AND to watch!!! Time to be HONEST here.....At first I really thought Misty's idea for this was the BEST.....but then when Natalie showed hers(???)...well, THAT sold me...hands down!! Natalie's VERY last idea....WOW..... So, sorry Jenny....but the girls ideas were just a teeny bit better! I just love to watch all three of these gals work together.....THIS is what family should be.....it's absolutely apparent that they all get along so great...and have so much fun! I'm always making comments about making a trip to MSQC....and my hubby says "Hmmm....How much you wanna bet that we'd be looking for houses to purchase in or near Hamilton so you could either add to your already HUGE stash of fabric...OR better yet, you'd convince me to more to Hamilton (Quilt Town USA)....so you could either spend some a LOT of time at MSQC's shops OR get a job there...(actually I'd probably just ask to work for FABRIC!!! ) Thanks so much.....it's amazing what you gals did with this idea. You make things so much fun!!

These are terrific project ideas! Natalie's denim idea is a great blooming quilt. I've got some old jeans that are perfect for this. Also, want to say that I've noticed how much more comfortable Natalie has become on camera from her first tutorial several years back. So glad for that because it's been clear to me from the beginning that she's a wonderfully creative and experienced seamstress and quilter. Those traits definitely run in your family! Thank you ladies and please thank your design team (Kim for one) and camera personnel for these wonderful tutorials, triple plays, and Misty's hour (forget its special name!).

During the "frayed look" phase many years ago, I made a denim purse (that I loved) with this method - my hubby made my 3" circle template and I just fused cut squares to the circle (no lines to draw!). Made it large enough for the purse pattern; topstitched the circle flaps down with variegated thread in the serpentine manner like Natalie. I left 2-3 circles in center of one row NOT stitched together or topstitched down to make an outside pocket (think bound buttonhole method); then top stitched flaps. I used an old toothbrush to fray the edges of the sewn circles. Your circle magic template looks easy and practical to use! ~ Sharon

I loved *ALL* of these ideas! I have a ton of denim squares cut out for a King size jean quilt, that I've actually been working on for a few years now....but seeing Natalie's....I'm rethinking my idea! 😆
