Belfast is a city in transition, a divided city, divided by walls and divided even by the River Lagan.
On the east bank there is a largely unionist population, and on the west, a solidly nationalist and Catholic one, with significant sections of unionists in the north and south.
There is another difference.
The Catholic population is young with the number rising to 49%.
The Protestant population is older and passing away and has dropped to 42%.
Others such as new immigrants or those from mixed relationships with no fixed religion make up the rest.
Belfast is at a tipping point, according to the author of a new peace report, Dr Paul Nolan.
He underscores the connection between that shifting population and the flags row in Belfast.
He said Belfast changed over the past decade from being a majority unionist city to a city where the largest group is Catholic.
He said these figures from the 2011 census were finally published a week after the row erupted in Belfast City Council over the decision to restrict the flying of the union flag to designated days only.
'Human sensors'
He said those protestors did not read the report, but they acted out of its realities.
"Sometimes people can act like human sensors. They pick up what is happening underneath their feet. That earthquake that was happening," he said.
That earthquake is one of the themes of peace monitoring report. It also describes young Protestant men, a quarter of whom are jobless, as a seedbed for trouble. This is because of alienation and the risk of being drawn into a cultural conflict.
Loyalist community worker, Gerald Solinas, who also represents the Ulster Political Research Group, is critical of the report.
A bandsman at the Twaddell Avenue protest camp in north Belfast
A bandsman at the Twaddell Avenue protest camp in north Belfast
He dislikes the language and claims its conclusions are too simplistic. He thinks words such as "tipping point" are dangerous.
He points out that nationalists face similar problems of deprivation and problems around jobs, housing and regeneration.
Cultural warfare
He often speaks for the protestors at the Twaddell Avenue camp in north Belfast, a symbol of loyalist fury over the parading and flags.
Mr Solinas acknowledged there is a sense of cultural warfare.
"The taking down of our flag at city hall, the demonization of our culture in parading is all things very true to our hearts. It's basically similar to someone coming into your house, rearranging the furniture. It just makes you feel very uncomfortable," he said.
While Catholics still suffer deprivation, Catholic schools are excelling, providing a route out of poverty.
Dr Nolan pointed to a confident nationalist population with a growing middle class, contrasting this with what is happening on the unionist Protestant side.
He said even if politicians had agreed the Haass proposals, it would not have solved the difficulty facing society in Belfast.
"This problem was still going to bubble up because what we have is inequality," he said.
"We've got a section of our population - young Protestant males - who have no routes out of their poverty. And they experience it as inequality. They experience it as alienation and it will erupt."
Mr Solinas and Dr Nolan agree that there is a lack of political leadership and vision at Stormont.
Brian Feeney, an Irish News columnist, said unionist politicians are pretending the changes are not happening while fighting a losing battle.
"It's been like King Canute. They are trying to force back the nationalist tide and it has completely failed," he said.
"All the unionist politicians know these statistics quite well. They know exactly where it is heading and they know the only outcome can be accommodation and reconciliation. And as it points out in the report there is peace, but no attempt at reconciliation whatsoever."
Belfast artists are reflecting the realities. Joe McWilliams, from the north of the city, has put on canvass vivid images of marching loyalists outside St Patrick's Church. But another artist, Susan Hughes from the south of the city, has just opened an exhibition at Stormont called quiet peacemakers.

Before the plantations Antrim was the most Catholic part of Ireland, hence why it was planted so its not like Antrim is 'owned' by unionists. It isn't their 'house' as was stated.

Ulster was the most rebellious part of Ireland and hence the plantations. They were initiated to quell any notions the Catholic natives might have about rocking Britains boat. Unfortunately the plantations were the seeds sown for centuries of conflict in Northern Ireland. It is no longer a Protestent state for a Protestent people and this grim realisation has the unionist communities having to accept that changes are coming down the tracks whether they like it or not

Did I just hear a Unionist talk about cross community problems like youth unemployment? Boy they sure are learning some new words aren't they. When Unionists were in a majority they didn't give a shit about cross community problems, all they cared about was keeping unionists on top. Of course when Catholics were marching for equal rights in Northern Ireland they were staunchly opposed by the unionists but now that they're fast approaching being a minority themselves they now want to talk about cross community problems.. god bless them.

Scuba Steve I hate to break this to you Stevie, but most of the Catholics in Ulster have Scottish ancestry. Co Donegal and Rathlin Island have a huge Scottish input and are majority RC. Rathlin was repopulated from Scotland. Ancient Irish surnames like McKeown, Campbell, McDonnell, McCabe all have Scottish roots and are borne by many RCs. If you were impartial you would notice RCs frequently have non-Irish surnames in Ulster, while Protestants often have indigenous ones. Or they share it. You have a Sinn Fein guy from South Armagh called MacAllister and the TUV guy called Allister. Doesn't take rocket science to work out these are basically variants of the same frigging surname! Don't buy into establishment mythology.

Why are they talking about a Protestant minority looming? Religion was a distraction and never really the problem, it was loyalists vs nationalists. There were/are a lot of catholic loyalists, just as there were/are a lot of protestant nationalists. The religious aspect, is just a perpetuation of propaganda.

Your correct this conflict has nothing really to do a religion ; although some people think the IRA war fighting for "trans substantiation" ! it's really quite simple native Irish Catholic nationalist....... planters British protestant loyalists... the native people of in the north of Ireland wish to be united with their fellow Irish in the south and why shouldn't they ......planters don't like it fuck back to Britain although we do have Orange on the flag unlikely Union Jack where there is no green ! .. how can you ask indigenous native Irish to be British !!!..it's a fucking insult ! considering the British Legacy on this island it's inconceivable ...these political loyalist scumbags gerrymandered electoral boundaries in the north of Ireland in order to keep them down ....the native Catholic Irish had little or no voice... Unionist councils allocated little or no social housing and only allowed 1 vote per household !! people got sick of been third class citizens on their own soil so they marched human rights !...UK rights !!..only to be beaten off the streets by a protestant loyalist unionists police ,while loyalist mobs run Riot in nationalist areas burning homes... ethnic cleansing the Irish tens of thousands of refugees crossed the border into the South it was around this time the British Army was sent in to protect Catholic nationalist areas but it didn't take too long for the Unionist Stormont government to use the army to put down Catholic marches and the rest is very recent history so how the hell can you expect any Irish person to be loyal to flag that oppressed them for so long , as for the loyalist unionists .....try having a longer memory !.. you reap what you sow one more thing it is easy to see injustice where there is clear ethnic and cultural differences.. like South Africa ,it was very easy to see who's been oppressed but when everybody is white it's not so easy, but it does... and has happened.

If you are a Catholic that means you are a Gaelic native Irish so why would you support the partition of your country from the very people who oppressed the Gaelic Irish for centuries not to mention how the unionists in the north of Ireland treated the Catholic minority you really need to sit down and think hard about what you're saying or perhaps you just a West Brit!!?

One must never forget, that Northern ireland was said to be a protestant land for a protestant people, while the Republic of Ireland from its earliest moments of conception onward has always been geared to be a place of religious freedom and peace between catholics and protestants. Wolfe Tone, who brought the current Irish flag to Ireland and fought for Irish independence was a protestant.

Impossible. Unionists will accuse you of everything under the sun to make them seem like the victims. Belfast couldn’t lower a flag down without unionists saying “YOU’VE DESTROYED EVERYTHING WE HOLD DEAR.” It’s pathetic honestly. I’m for a united ireland and as much as the next person. But even the comment above mine shows that the unionists victim complex will always prevail. Because if unionists claim they aren’t being treated as “second class citizens” then they would have no argument.

When they say Belfast, they are talking about the city council area. Every time new houses are built, in Newtownabbey, Carrick, Bangor, Newtownards and Lisburn. Belfast's population falls, only thing maintaining the population of Belfast is immigration. Remember not 1690 but that you can only get 3 car seats in the back of your average family car, no matter the colour of the paint work. Don't forget that EU nationals that arrived here are typically catholic and couldn't care less about which side of the peace walls they live, work or mix in.

That is why if this small island was united it would not have one religion more than another like what was the case in the free state as well the six counties. Robert Kelly I think you mean unionist, loyalists take a more "aggresive" stance towards unionism. With that said, there are unionists in the republic, there just a tiny minority. However you seem to be forgeting that before the Irish war of "Independence" the majority of Irish were in fact unionist. It's just when home rule was denied, That was when we decided the union wasn't for us. Also the protestant unionists at the end of the 1800's spoke Irish and considered themselves to be Irish. The war of independence divided the island even more, and changed everything.

I'm an American Episcopal who converted from my mother's Anglican religion to my father's Catholic religion in the US Army when the Anglicans here in America jumped on the Gay marriage bandwagon. My grandmother was a Catholic from Galway who married a Yankee Methodist. One of my nieces was a Protestant in Belfast during her high school years and another one is a convert to Catholicism in Dallas, Texas. The reason Irish Protestants are becoming a minority not merely in the South but in the North as well today is no big mystery and certainly not some genocide by Catholics. Catholics are simply the ones having most of the kids because Catholicism has never bought into the Malthusian myth of overpopulation which as John Lennon once pointed out was basically just something rich politicians used to rationalize wars. Malthus predicted everybody in the British Isles was going to freeze to death in the 19th century because all their firewood would be used up. Hello that never happened because every new mouth to feed comes with a brain to figure out how to do it.

+United Ulsterman Could you explain to me what that red hand is symbolic of in the centre of that flag?
@unitedulsterman1
@unitedulsterman1 8 жыл бұрын
The Red Hand is an ancient symbol and is not entirely unique to Ulster. Some historians, anthropologists, suggest that it may have middle eastern origin and traveled across Europe by tribal westward movement. On the island of Ireland, it is distinct to Ulster only historically, methodologically and politically, and has been so, long before a people known as the Gaels arrived probably from the Iberian peninsula. In fact, the most ancient monuments in Ulster (as well as the rest of Ireland) pre-date the Gaelic arrival by at least 2500 years. Traditionally, the Red Hand of Ulster is associated with Ulster's Red Branch Knights who defended Ulster against Ireland between 100 BC & 100 AD at Ulster's ancient capital Navan Fort. Anthropologists believe that the Ulster people during these times were a 'Cruithinic' people connected with the Pict's and part of the ancient British tribes of unknown origin. Because the Gaels were a foreign people, (St Patrick's Confession calls them 'strangers') like most invaders, they adopted many localisms and portrayed them as their own as the Gaels invaded into Ulster. At this time (approx 550 AD) many Ulster folk, who were label by the Romans as 'Scotti' departed for the land of 'Alba' giving that land their name - land of Scotti - land of Scots - Scotland. Very few battles are recorded by their arrival which may display their Pictish ancestry. In Ulster, the Gaels corrupted the Red Hand symbol as being theirs as they did with all Ireland's ancient historical sites. However, by the 1600's onward Ulster was planted mainly with Scots which in their oral history was seen as a home-coming. Unfortunately, by the time so-called Irish nationalists began to develop their narrative, the Red Hand was now seen as Irish & Gaelic. In Ulster, as it was and still is, the symbol of freedom, of resistance to aggression, of expression of culture. Sadly, because of certain religious teachings, many of Ulster's Roman catholic community are unaware of their origins and tie themselves to many historical inaccuracies such as the one above. +United Ulsterman I have read into this in great detail in relation to the picts and cruthins through the use of the web, ancient history books and so forth and a lot of what you have said in that comment doesn't add up. It's nearly one sided even but there are certain things you've said that have been depicted it in an entirely different light from various different historians and anthropologists. You stated in relation to the cruthins that they were the first people to predate the gaelic arrival to Ireland, yet the studies I've read on both sides of the argument have stated that picts were the first to predate them. On top of this, they were also fluent Irish speakers all over the Island and were sought to have lived all over the island including antrim, galway, laois and derry. In other words, you've flipped it onto the other side of the coin and said that ulster people were a cruithinic people yet various historians have provided substantial evidence stating that picts were the first known settlers in Ireland. In relation to your comment on the red hand of ulster, there is absolutely no known theory or piece of archaeological evidence that supports your statement. On top of this, the leaders of the red branch knights all had Irish names that were descendants of picts that occupied all of Ireland. From what I can see, there's an incredible amount of one sided and biased white lies/hooks thrown into this comment from a collective perspective.
@unitedulsterman1
@unitedulsterman1 8 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you have read???, but I can't understand where you missed the point that the Cruithin & the Pict's were the SAME people.This has been recognised right up to the medieval period of Dal Riada. Furthermore, there's no such language as 'Irish', there's Gaelic in its varying forms, but even that wasn't standardised until the early 1800's because a person in County Cork was unable to understand a person in County Donegal. A point of note during these times was that the so-called 'Gaelic revival' renamed numerous ancient place names with Gaelic alternatives to advance the idea that Ireland as a whole was Gaelic in origin. Gaelic 'history' and by way of 'Irish' nationalism laced with Roman Catholicism is based on the so-called Annals of Ireland (Annals of the Four Masters) written in the 1600's by Franciscan monks, whereas, the Annals of Ulster which dates back to 400 AD, although colourful, are considered the most ancient documented history - hence the above Gaelic history included them! The facts are, the Gaels are NOT distinct of the island of Ireland, there are NO ancient monuments attributed to them, furthermore, they were a linguistic group, not an ethnic entity. As for the Red Hand, I clearly stated it is of unknown origin, but was and is relevant to Ulster. This is not one-sided and I do not claim the absolute, but when some people are prepared to fight & die for a recently constructed myth, and that causes innocent people to loose their lives, then any academic/intellectual/historical examination is the only thing that will take the perpetrators away form the instigators!

+United Ulsterman. What better reliable source than linking to your own website eh buddy? _"defended Ulster against Ireland"_ What a laughably retarded statement. Ulster is in Ireland you moron. The first instance of the red hand of ulster comes from the Fenian cycle of Irish mythology. It was then used by the Uí Néill clan against the English in the Nine Years War. Literally none of that absolute shite you stated is true in any shape or form. Professor Dáibhí Ó Cróinín has stated that the "notion that the Cruthin were 'Irish Picts' and were closely connected with the Picts of Scotland is quite mistaken" while Professor Kenneth H. Jackson has said that the Cruthin "were not Picts, had no connection with the Picts, linguistic or otherwise, and are never called Picti by Irish writers". You are a foreign Scottish bastard who came over in the 17th century, and no psuedo-history or "we wuz cruthin n shit" nonsense is gonna change that fact.
