@@rossjeffries3522 it's what drives me wild when people act as if being a system QB is an insult. it's not. if the scheme and team doesn't sync up with the QB you're gonna have suboptimal play, regardless of how talented your qb is. especially if your coaches are bad at teaching and executing the system. just look at the patriots when they got cam newton or the seahawks when they changed their scheme. the patriots imploded and russ wasn't in sync with the new style of play. seahawks found a new guy that matched up better and had a high end offense, patriots did solid during mac jones' rookie year. 49ers got a pretty qb friendly system with good coaching so darnold has a decent shot at reviving his career.

You read it, but didn't understand it. Ryan Leaf had more 'arm talent' than Peyton, but didn't have the brain to go with it.. Joe and Steve, as great as they are (and I'm a Niner fan since 81), they didn't have the most arm talent.. That would be Elway and Marino from that period of time (0 SB wins in the 80s).. The thing that made Joe and Steve special was their timing and being able to read and manipulate defenses at the line and with their eyes.. And Joe just had that something extra that no one can seem to put a finger on as dude was a winner in college and the pros and, imo, is still the GOAT over Brady since Joe didn't have rules created to make it easier for him to extend his career.. He got blasted TWICE by the NYG in NFCCGs and lost 2+ seasons due to that, during his prime.. Could've been two more rings for Joe.. 6-0 > 7-3.

Even Montana has said about himself "I never threw a spiral, more of an accurate wobble." Montana would be nightmare for every defense if he played now with all the protection QBs get now. He got his ass kicked constantly but never backed down and played amazing. Perfect reason why you can't really compare Montana & Brady.

Purdy is not going to sit on the sidelines and let them take his job. He will go out there and play, or destroy his arm. Sitting on the sidelines and waiting for things to be perfect is not an option. He may never make it back on the field if Lance or Darnold are winning. Lance hasn't even figured out what he is yet. He has been a starter one full season between college\pro. I think using him as a running QB is nuts. Let him extend plays and grab 3rd down conversions when no one is open. We don't need him doing designed runs. If you want your QB available, you don't do that in the NFL. His fit is just fine in the offense. He was just not being used correctly. Niners have a ton of potential in the QB room. It really will come down to who can get the playing time.

Joe Montana didn't have a great arm. He was great. Because he played mistake free football. He was the ultimate system quarterback. His style of play. Was perfect for the West Coast offense.
