Hi Juliette, recently fell on love with My City Plants KZfaq and your videos. They are so relaxing to watch! We recently bought a Bird of Paradise from a neighbour. It had seen better days but thanks to your videos it's now been repotted into a Lechuza self watering planter and the drooping stems have been staked for support. The newest leaf, a large and beautifully green one has not taken to the repotting well and was drooped over quite badly. It looks like the weight of the large leaf is potentially snapping itself from its stem. Do you have any tips to prevent this?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Жыл бұрын
Hi Zachary, Thank you for watching our videos. I am glad you enjoy it. Congratulations on your new Bird Of Paradise plant. Sounds like you are doing everything right :) Weak stems can be the result of repotting, lack of nutrients or watering issue. - since you have used fresh soil for repotting, you do not need to fertilize your plant as most potting mixes already have nutrients mixed in. - you may add support to new leaves if they are too heavy to help the plant while it is getting its strength and recovers from the repotting shock + its new environment - make sure the plant is getting plenty of light (best bright indirect but couple of hours of sun will be appreciated) - use the soil meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc to establish a proper watering frequency + to know if you used enough water and lower roots were reached. ** Meter reading should be down to zone 4-5 before watering and up to 8-10 zone after watering. Here is the video about how to use the soil meter : bit.ly/3TI2sMb + video about how to water plants in Lechuza planters: bit.ly/3bWSmRs Green Cheers & May your Bird of Paradise grow happy and healthy! 🌱

@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shea, You can use Classico 43 or Classico 50 for your Bird Of Paradise plant, depending on how root bound the plant is now and how big its root system. 3-5 inches larger pot will do! Yes, after repotting, water through the soil for the first 3 months Green Luck & Thank you for watching 🌱

Hi Camila, 1. you can divide the plant bit.ly/3xMylKm 2. you can prune roots back (no more than 20%) and keep your Bird Of Paradise plant in the same pot for another year. 3. By pruning leaves back you can keep your plant in the desired height and or width bit.ly/30JifQZ Thank you for watching! 🌱

I am planning to use all PON instead of soil, do you think its a good idea or soil is still the best for the birds of paradise? Thank you.
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ana Marie, Thank you for watching! Yes, you can use Pon instead of a potting mix. ***Make sure to get rid of as much of the soil as possible from the roots before potting it and don't forget about the "dry phase" - a break between waterings/refilling the reservoir. For this size (Rondo 40) the dry phase should be approx. 7-10 days. Green Luck!

Help my plant is new to me and I have researched and watched many of your videos the leaves on my plant are brown on edges on some of what do I do shall I leave them or trim them thankyou
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching 🌱 Yes, you can trim leaves but if the issue os not fixed, the edges will get brown again. This can be the result of a few things: light, watering, nutrients, root issue, pests... - Make sure your Bird of Paradise plant gets a good amount of light. Best bright indirect light. - Check your watering routine. Always test the soil before watering! Soil should be dry approx. half way through before your plant gets watered. * I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc Test the soil once a week. Bird of Paradise plants should be watered when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone - Make sure the pot is not too small or too big for your plant. The root system should have about 3-5 inches of the soil around it. - Check the roots. Take the plant out of the pot and examine the roots. Any dark, mushy roots should be removed. Repot the plant in a fresh soil if roots have an issue. - Make sure the pot has drainage and your plant is not sitting in water after watering. - Fertilize Spring-Summer ** How and When To Fertilize plants video: bit.ly/3teZEaw You can find more videos about these plants in our Bird of Paradise Playlist: bit.ly/3h6j1OQ Green Luck, and hope your plant will get better and thrives! 🌱

Hi Elizabeth, Thank you for watching! 🌱 Yes, you may prune back the roots. Do not cut more than 20%. After root pruning, keep a close eye on your plant. Make sure to keep the soil moist. Do not allow it to dry out completely. For the first month or so, watering frequency should be a bit higher. Place the plant in the brightest light spot. Rotate often. **Some leaf yellowing is expected after root pruning. Simply remove affected leaved. Here is my video about how to prune BOP leaves: bit.ly/30JifQZ Green Luck!

Hello, thanks for video. I have a couple questions. I repotted a 6 foot bird of paradise into a Lechuza LS 50 Classico pot 2 weeks ago with 16 quart of "Good Dirt" Indoor Potting Mixture (plus the Pon that came with the Lechuza pot). Though Lechuza instructs putting in 2.4 us liq gallons for this pot, I put in half about 1.2 us liq gallons following your video. After watering with 1.2 us liq gallon, no water came through bottom of liner and the water level indicator did not rise at all. My moisture meter is still indicating 2 weeks later than it is between 6-8 moist level. I called Lechuza and they said even though you're not using the supply water shaft for the first 12 weeks, the water indicator should still rise up when watering on top of soil. Can you tell me if that's true in your experience? Also, should I put in 2.4 us liq gallons directly on soil rather than 1.2 us liq gallons? Thank you

I have one at home, where there are four different main stems and 3 of them are big and tall, but there is a 4th one in there which is way smaller and shorter than the rest. I would like to take it out and put it together with another smaller BoP that I have :)

Hi Lucy, This video is on my list :) Meanwhile, read the below. There are 2 options for how it can be done. HOW TO DIVIDE BOP: - More aggressive approach - cutting. Watch this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5Z3l7JkquClnGQ.html With this option, the roots will go into a deeper shock BUT will adjust and recover. ***You will have to keep an eye on the plant and water it more often at the beginning to help the roots to grow. - Less aggressive approach- separating. Wait for the soil to dry 3/4 way down. Take the plant out of the pot. Untangle and separate roots. * IT IS OK to cut some roots to help to take the root system apart. Tool I use to prune/cut roots: amzn.to/371D9OL Here is the POTTING MIX I would recommend using for re-potting: bit.ly/2SumKuf This potting mix is full of nutrients, and extra plant food is not needed after re-potting - for at least 1 year. * If you are using a different potting mix, this is the PLANT FOOD I would use to help the plant to recover after rep-potting and grow strong and healthy: bit.ly/35qzXtf Hope this helps. GREEN LUCK! 🌱

HELP!! I have a humongous BoP in my backyard that needs thinning out!! It also seems to be sick maybe. Sooo squished together that it has some mold I’ve noticed (just bought home) and it’s flower look like they’re diseased 😢 I’d love to have some BofP as house plants but definitely large statement mounds for yard - just want it health 😢❤

I just repotted my BOP and the roots are already coming through the drain holes😢. Should I repot? Also, the roots are in the water in the drain tray. Will this cause root rot? Please help!😅

Hi! Sounds like you used a pot that is not big enough :) You can repot your Bird of Paradise plant in a larger pot or cut roots back for now and repot when roots grow through again. After watering you may remove the excess water if not all is taken by the plant after 1 day. As long as you allow the soil to dry between watering - root rot should not be an issue. Thank you for watching 🌱

Beautiful plant and video. Just wish there wasn't these wasted plastic planters headed to the landfill because the plant couldn't be removed more easily. Not super economical. And im sure the planter wasn't cheap 😬

Hi! Yes, would be much easier if the plant was repotted earlier. 😀 On average, BOP plants should be repotted once every 2 years.

Hi! Thank you for watching! 🌱 Re-potting and change of place is a shock to any plant. Make sure it gets good light and watering. Allow the soil to dry half way down and then water well - make sure the soil gets well saturated all the way through. Mist leaves often and rotate the plat to provide an equal light exposure to all sides. Once the plant acclimates to its new settings, it should stabilize. Green Luck!

Hi! If you have your plant indoors and leave in a city like NYC, plant will not produce any flowers. The climate is just not right for it to bloom. If you are in a sunny, warm and humid part of the world, the plant will produce flowers. Bird of paradise will not bloom until it's mature which may take a few years. Here are some helpful tips: bit.ly/3wgl7RC Green Luck! 🌱

Do you know why is your strelizia so beautiful? Because you have small planter. Now the complete power will be going in the roots because you put this in much to big planter. The new planter can be maximal 2 sizes bigger..

My bird of paradise foliage seem crispy. What can I do :(
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mariana, Crispy, brown edges on your Bird of Paradise can be the sign of under-watering or/and very low humidity. - I recommend this tool (Soil Moisture Meter) to help you to establish a proper watering frequency: bit.ly/2yuXVpc - Ensure the pot is big/deep enough for your plant and all roots well covered with the soil/potting mix. - It is best t have a humidifier near the plant, especially during times when heat or Ac is in use. - Do not place plants near air vents or heaters. Green Luck, and Thank you for watching! 🌱
