Thanks Lyn, another great video. I just purchased a plant that I think may be either a Cleistocactus Winteri or Pilosocereus chyrstostele. The garden centre from where I purchased the plant did not know what it was. I decided to label it as the pilosocereus because it is upright, but I just saw your Cleistocactus Winteri upright. Mine looks identical to yours. I love Winteri Cacti. But all cacti are amazing in their ability to callous and form roots and stay dry for the winter. I love these plants so much! Sorry to ramble on. Fantastic Video!

Hi Lynn. This is the last video I had any notification for. I've just checked all my settings and the 'bell' is activated, but I had no notification about Hans broken Cacti or the video you put up this morning. Not sure why, but might be worth checking your settings. If I had relied on notifications I would have missed the last three videos 😕 Have switched the bell icon off and back on again to see if that sorts it out. Just thought you should know. Happy Growing. Kaye xx

Dear Lynn, whenever you meantion "peat" are you talking about the soil that is made of the husk of coconuts?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the peat I am talking about is the peat moss that is often used in a lot of commercial soil, but coconut coir that is from the husk of coconuts can be a good addition to use in cactus soils, I don't use it myself but I know a lot of growers who use coconut coir in their cactus soils and are very happy with it,, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon Awww thank you so very much for the lovely detailed answer. I just have one more question left: Through trial and error what I ended up using now for the airation of my cacti soil is sand, pumice, lava rock and sometimes perlite. The only moisture bearing agent is coconut coir and I should probably mention that I only use terrakotta pots. I dont have any mold growing with this mix and I hardly have fungut gnats, but the soil keeps drying out so fast even in winter. Should I just "up" the ratio of cocunut coir to "grit", use a different moisture bearing soil completelyl or maybe add loam to the coir? I am sorry for the long message but I really trust you. I wish you all the best and a huuge greenhouse to fill with all the plant you desire! 🥰❤

Similar issue. Moved area and climate. Lost succulents to freeze but one cactus overgrown so babies are actually rooting into bottom layer of the cactus. I’m trying to find out if I can but the big ones off and plant lower but then they wont have roots. Or only pot up the babies?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 жыл бұрын
Hi :-D It can depend on what type of cactus it is, the babies that have roots will be able to be planted up but the big ones without roots may be best to be treated as cuttings and then planted up once the cut part/s of them have dried and they will then re root themselves, good luck with re propagating them :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX

Love your Pilosocereus, I need to get one. How soon after repotting can you put him in the sun? If he already has roots can he tolerate the sun right away?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 жыл бұрын
So happy you love this Pilosocereus :-D I love its little arms haha, its a wonderful wacky looking cactus, you can put them in the sun right away if they are rooted already, but with cuttings without roots its best to put into a well lit but shadier position away from direct sunshine until they have rooted, if you get one that has been in the mail for a few days boxed up its best to slowly acclimatise the new cactus to the sun and cover with a shade cloth for about 5 days to allow the cactus to acclimatise to the higher light levels, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX

hole in cactus . solution pls.thx. also how to grow root on pruned cactus?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi Terry :-D a hole in the cactus can be due to a few things the most common being vine weevils or snails or mice, if the hole is only small and the rest of the cactus is unaffected its best to leave the hole and it will callus over in time, with pruned cactus cuttings, it can depend a lot on the type of cactus as many vary with their propagation, but with cereus cactus cuttings keep the cuttings dry and unpotted in a shady place to callus over for a couple of weeks, if the base of the cuttings are very wide ( wider than 2 inches ) let them callus over for about 6 weeks, then plant the cuttings into dry soil and into a bright position but away from strong sunshine until they have rooted, once you see signs of new growth fro the top you can water as normal, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful plant powered Sunday XXXX

Hi Joe, it may be best to remove your cactus from the pot to be on the safe side to check that there are no problems with the roots, if its your Autumn/Fall now its best to remove from the soil and pot and check over the root system, if all looks well pot into dry cactus soil and let the cactus rest until the Spring, good luck with your cactus, and thanks so much for watching XXXX
