Quick note: Garibaldi, the man who united Italy with the expedition of the 1000 men, heavilly used colt dragoons. Since he was always outnumbered by the enemy but had a pretty good budget for the expedition, he ordered many colt dragoons and used them in charges, at close quarter distance. He would try to shotren the gap between he and his enemies and then he would have a row of men armed with a pair of colt dragoons unleashing a volley of 12 shots at close distance.

Not that we have all that many originals here; apparently the ones that survived the Civil War were mostly scooped up by Remington (acting as agents for the French govt.) and shipped off to a 2nd life in the Franco-Prussian war. Watch the Hunkie's channel ["CapandBall"] for a peek at the how they're still seeing use in Yurp...

*Any* new content is good, y'all could literally make a 10-episode series on the evolution of brooms from 1800-1950 and it'd be worth watching. Listening to the sheer ridiculousness that is Colt's life story is certainly an ideal accompaniment to breakfast.

"Ridiculousness!" Nay, I won't have it! The man lived life large, is all! He merely believed that capitalization of the "T" in Truth was optional, as were the validity of any components that went into its composition... 😁🤪😄

If you made a series down the line called conversions talking about the start of cartridge firing revolvers, that would be amazing.

There are plenty of repros of those too. They are usually less accurate repros though, in that they are usually chambered in modern cartridges for convenience, along with other things to make manufacturing easier, or for legal compliance. They are also considered legally firearms in the US, so they are more expensive and harder to get hold of then blackpowder pistols.

Love the ‘Reprocussion’ episodes. The fired group was impressive, particularly considering the somewhat distracting need to restore the loading-lever to its fully locked upright position after every shot. It must be expected that any mid 19th century frontier soldier, lawman or pioneer would have been more than impressed by the utility of the zip-tie/cable tie; they would have requested that dozens of the plastic wonders be supplied, in a wide range of sizes and restraint capabilities.
@SlavicCelery
@SlavicCelery 2 жыл бұрын
The historic man when interacting with a zip tie would inevitably end up using it in a vulnerable body area. I've worked in hospitals with a more modern man. It ends poorly more than it should.

Love this gun! Many a Colt Dragoon came through the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails here in Kansas. The U.S. Mounted Riflemen were founded in 1846. The 2nd Dragoons has existed since 1836. The original order was for the M.R. when they were founded. All were converted into Cavalry in 1861. Awesome series!

Hopefully you will cover its production in London and travels with the British army in detail. It may also provide a nice chance for a sidebar comparison to the British Adams revolver. Unfortunately I have not seen a replica of the Adams in quite some time. At any rate, please keep up the great work!

I really LOVE the reprocussion series. Please, please keep going! In regard to the loading procedures, I checked Poinsett, Congdon, and Cooke's cavalry manuals of the period. Poinsett doesn't mention loading the revolver, and Cooke is clearly talking about loading combustible cartridges. The only source that explicitly discusses loading non-combustible paper cartridges in a Colt revolver is Congdon. Congdon is very vague about the process (Congdon's Cavalry Compendium, 1864, p. 95): 2. Handle-CARTRIDGE. One time, one motion. Seize the cartridge with the thumb and first two fingers, and carry it to the mouth. 3. Tear-CARTRIDGE. Bite off the end, carry the cartridge opposite the chamber nearest the lever. 4. Charge-CARTRIDGE One time, two motions. 1. Empty the powder into the chamber, and insert the ball, pressing it down far as possible with the thumb and forefinger. 2. Turn the pistol with the left hand, bringing the hammer towards the body, and cock it with the thumb of the right hand. This leads me to wonder whether the ball was simply squeezed through the length of the paper into the chamber, or, possibly, the paper was ripped off as were those for the Springfield rifle paper cartridges. The former method troubles me as it seems likely much of the grease would be removed during the process. If the latter method was used, then your idea of a second bite and tear would work, but remember that the official manuals of arms for the Springfield taught soldiers to hit the paper against the muzzle of the rifle to get the paper to tear off of the bullet, so it's not clear that your method can be evidentially supported (which doesn't mean it's not valid!).

As Othais pointed out, all the Colt (saddle) holster revolvers were habitually referred to as "Dragoons." So the Walker is essentially a superset: a Walker can correctly be referred to as a Dragoon pistol, but a Dragoon is not necessarily a Walker...
