I think he said it so many times because, for his first 16 years in Congress, Senator Richard Shelby was a Democrat before becoming a Republican in 1994, so for people in Alabama with long memories, it wouldn't be a stretch for some to see him vote for a Democrat, especially a more conservative Alabama Democrat like Roy Moore's then-opponent Dough Jones, and with how Republican Alabama has become since the 1990s he could be worried it would hurt his reelection.

** Listen up willlya! The rules relating to dating, girlfriends have become more politically correct over time. Roy Moore was dating decades ago. At that time not many females opted to go to college, university or do a career. They might have some sort of work prior to getting married but marriage was then the big career for a girl. I can recall in my youth how girls aged fourteen already had rings on their fingers while waiting to leave school prior to announcing their engagement then getting married at fifteen or sixteen. That was not all that unusual then. Due to better economic times and modern necessity the age of marriage is now in one's twenties as a usual thing with fewer teenage marriages. It is always a problem when the rules change over time because then people tend to judge people from decades previously in a negative way. I am not saying that Roy Moore did date underaged girls but that would not have been unusual if he had done so as at that time even if he was twice their age. An established man in a good career would have been considered a great catch by the girl's parents. Just get over it. You belong to a more coddled generation than previous ones. Girls, particularly from large families, who were going nowhere, were often encouraged to get married as soon as they found someone in a job who was interested in them. Such a marriage would have relieved the financial burden on their parents who had many other kids to feed, clothe and educate.
