And I remember someone telling me why they might be voting that way (Iowa voted for Harken, a Democrat at the same time as voting for Grassley, a Republican for a long time). Apparently, the longer you've voted a certain way the harder it is to change even as the world changes around you. So one reason is many voters are older. And in certain states like Iowa, people tend to vote just like their parents have always done or they don't vote. Another reason is that Grassley became a really big deal in the Senate. He was on several of the most important committees. Even now, he ranks 2nd in the Senate. Having that kind of representation in the Senate must make many Iowans feel important. When Grassley finally leaves the Senate, they lose that. Kentuckians probably feel the same about McConnell. It's sad , but I think that does influence their thinking.
