PLEASE read the whole description!
This video helps prove that there is something (some) CFL bulbs are good for. ;-)
In light of the blizzard and the fact that my electricity has been going up and down around the time I made this video, here is a presentation on how to repurpose an old uninterruptible or standby power supply with an external battery. Toward the end of this video, you also get to see a demonstration of how it works.
First: consider your safety. Don't do this if you don't understand what, why and how to do this. Be honest with yourself and your skills. It's not worth being hurt or burned. Disassembling a UPS presents a risk of electrical shock and some of the parts inside can remain energized! A big UPS has its own hazards. Always use fuses and appropriately sized wiring. Never charge a lead acid battery in an enclosed space or in a heavily populated part of your home. Explosive gases can build up and be ignited.
Second: consider that not all UPS units will properly charge or operate from any other battery than the one they were sold with. You will have to experiment to see what works with what you have.
Third: yes, there are other ways of doing this--a large enough charger and inverter can perform the same function if you supply the batteries. It's a "good idea" to use a battery intended for the purpose, such as a deep cycle type, but cheap car or lawn tractor batteries will usually work better than you'd expect and live long enough to be a more economical choice, especially if your electrical service is reliable.
UPS units with dead batteries are available almost anywhere. The plastic box came from a Dollar General store and was drilled and cut appropriately. I bought the toggle switch at Wal-Mart, in the automotive department. You can get a wide variety of panel meters from eBay. There are scores of sellers in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan that carry them. Such meters usually cost less than $20 (US).
Most UPS units have a "modified sinewave" or "stepped approximation to a sinewave" output. This can cause problems with some equipment. Really old and/or cheap UPS units will have a squarewave output. If you get lucky and find a UPS with a true sinewave output circuit (usually marked as such--also try downloading the manual for the unit you have), it will safely operate almost any electrical device you can connect, so long as the output rating of the inverter is not exceeded.
Recycle any dead batteries appropriately and do not put them in the trash.

I have a 1285VA "Geek Squad" private label UPS, one of their super HD models and the one battery was going bad. Opening it up I found two batteries bonded together, and to my surprise they were running in series ! The damn thing needed 24 VDC. The original batteries were Yuasa 12V 8Ah so I am replacing both with two tractor batteries with matched characteristics. I only post this because not all UPS's are 12 VDC and will not run using the example given in your EXCELLENT video, good job !

i did the same with a "forza nt-7610" UPS and a 95 amp hour interstate battery (pf-24f-5-es) ... simply took out the original battery, extended the cables, made two holes into the housing of the ups and connected the car battery ... works like a charm ... of course it takes time to recharge the battery but no overcharging etc ... just please be careful everybody so you don't get hurt ... think first, then act :)

It might be worth mentioning that if you are going to attempt this upgrade to do some research into the battery types that are available. There are some sealed cell deep cycle batteries out there that, while expensive, add an extra layer of safety. And any additional layer of safety is welcomed. I have a SmartUPS 1500 that I picked up for free. Going to test it out with a pair of Optima Blue Top marine batteries. And if that works out well I may upgrade to the more expensive cells.

I have that same exact NAPA battery. I have it mounted on a small hand cart with bungie cords and I have alligator clips on it running to a 12V car lighter port mounted on the handle. I use it to run tire inflators and other 12V devices. I have this coleman multi tool set with a drill, recip saw, circ saw, light, and a buffer/sander. I modded one of the old batteries to connect to the rig thru a 12V car lighter plug and now I can actually use the rest of the tools and it lasts a long time.

You can by good quality compatible batteries for very low prices (under $30). No need to ever throw out a UPS.

I used to pick tons of these up, and the fact was, I ended up tossing quite a few and scrapping the batteries. Luckily none were very special ones, just basic cheap ones...and I still find them often...so no loss. This is an awesome idea, and I think I will gather the supplies and maybe bust one out near the storm season when we do seem to have power failures. It would be useful to power a light or such.

I'm glad I'm living in Idaho; we're kinda on the edge, so though it's been biting cold all day (20 degrees at most) we aren't getting pummeled. That doesn't look like fun.

In an emergency situation you wouldn't have time to rig them up. The main focus isn't lighting, its showing that you can re-purpose a UPS with a dead gel cell using a common wet-cell that you can find anywhere. Also the run time with an average car battery would be pretty impressive.

I worked for a company called PILLER and when I left I got 2 anton piller 10kva 3 phase ups and 2 5 kva powerwire both on line UPS systems I left the company 15 years ago so all the batteries are bad I remove the batteries and turned them in to Jhonson controls and got .50cent per batteries . I lost power way back when the were good and had both hooked to 2 different rooms and frig lasted 5 days then both went down on low battery. I wish I had the money to get batteries for them

PLEASE note, APC as an example, has UPS that need a 12 volt battery AND they have UPS that have 2 or more batteries in series to create 24 volts. Note the battery voltage your UPS runs on BEFORE connecting a battery to it. I rebuild these frequently. I've seen 4@ 6 volt in series, 24 volt total, I've seen 2 @ 12 volt in series, 24 volt total and I've seen 1 @ 12 volts only in an APC UPS.

APC isn't the only one that uses multiple batteries in series. My CyberPower 1500PFCLCD uses 2 12 volt batteries in series for a total of 24 volts.

my advice is if you have a smart-ups model mod it so you can attach batteries to from the outside. if you due this you will less likely break the ribbon cable connected to the battery door. I had a smart-ups 1000va and the ribbon cable broke off the battery door and fried some chips on the main board near the front. So i threw it away and got a cheaper back-ups instead. i mod the back-ups 1500va to use the same batteries that in smart-ups 1000va model.

@jefferyb304 Your UPS unit probably has stepped sine or even square wave output, so it'll have a good bit of harmonics. These in turn are more easily reproduced by the speaker in said Magnavox console. Looks like that one could use some new electrolytics, the filter caps have to be pretty much dead.

From a guy who's "been there, done that". Get RID of the old school wet lead/acid car batteries. These things are heavy, discharge too fast, and present way too many problems to be used indoors. Sealed lead acid batteries : Way better and safer performance. For the most part: APC's 1000, 1500 UPS' are pure sine wave output. However the whole design of a UPS is not geared to long term power generation rather providing a means to save data and shut down within minutes.

Would a Smart-UPS 1400 be one of the true sine-wave units? I have one here but the batteries seem to be dead. It uses a pair of sealed lead acid batteries. My plans were to disconnect the batteries and use the unit as a "power scrubber" to clean up the power output from my '74 Onan generator, so i could run things like my fridge and such in the even of an outage. Would this work?

Hei! This is really good DIY, but I did not find a warning about how much Wats (amps) can you connect to a UPS with car battery. I would like to power 1000W with an 800VA - 500W UPS that is modified with car battery. Is however inverter enough powerfull or I should get a different UPS, the one that has enough powerfull inverter? I will be pulling 460W-500W at 12V x 2 on 240V from that UPS, can you suggest me if this is the good idea? And of course is the 30A fuse enough or I should take less - 15A? Thanks! Tad

I have an Eaton Powerwear 3105 UPS that no longer works, so I'm thinking of getting rid of it, today I was looking at the warnings on the battery cover and it said something about "This device output is not sinusoidal", what does that mean? Does that have something to do with a sine wave output?

Somewhat later in time, there's a 300 watt pure sine wave inverter for about $50. www.eastwood.com/eastwood-300w-pure-sine-wave-power-inverter.html $40 + $10-$12 shipping. It's a compact inverter and the output waveform is a clean sine wave, whether powering LED bulbs, an incandescent bulb or a 100 watt soldering gun. The idle current is 0.3amp. Put the same system together but ave a relay turn on power to the inverter when the lights go out. I have a much larger backup system, using a solar-charged 420AH 12 volt battery bank and a 2000 watt pure sine wave (PSW) inverter. There's a 4 circuit GenTran switch (they now go by ProTran and the smallest they sell is a 6 circuit switch) to transfer furnace, fridge and some counter outlets and lights to the inverter or a gasoline generator - yes, my backup has a backup ;-) The solar system is sized for "Wait until daylight" so I'm not out in a thunderstorm or shoveling 7" of snow at 30F to get out a gas generator. That time is 8 to 20 hourse depending on the season but 8 hours is "Wait until daylight" time. The 300 watt PSW inverter and a 500 watt PSW inverter are fallbacks if both the 2000 watt PSW inverter and the backup 2000 watt PSW inverter fail. Won't be running the fridge on either but can run internet and charge cell phones, tablets, laptops and power ham radios. If power is out longer than the solar system can supply, first backup is a 1600 watt inverter generator that can run the same basic load as the inverter and recharge the battery bank, running about 6 hours on a gallon of gas. You might also want to look for an AGM battery (search the for sale section on Craig's List) because the AGMs are sealed and don't need ventilation. A number of vehicles now use AGM batteries (so the battery can be in the trunk) and you might find used but still usable of those inexpensively. I picked up some year old 100AH AGMs for $100 each on Craig's List (new cost is $170-$200 each). 100AH is a lot more power than the 23 AH or so of that U1 riding mower battery and the AGM will take 1000 discharges to 50% capacity while that will kill the little battery.

Nice vid bill i want to buy a ups to protect my home entertainment center from surges and keep it running for at least an hour since thats how long the light company takes to fix a prob. It sucks cause where i live we are very prone to outages. No internet sucks!! These units have just enough power to keep my router running. Im in the middle of figuring out how many watts my center pulls to buy this ups and fter i might connect an external battery like yours. If you anything to add for my proj

Last power outage was the big ice storm of I beleive 2008, so we ran our house off a generator.
