A fairly unusual level crossing located on a narrow single-track road within Retford, Nottinghamshire. This level crossing's barriers are only raised when a user presses a small button to notify the controlling signalling centre that they want to cross, and it appears (from what I observed on my visit) that the barriers will not lower again until a train is approaching, as these were raised upon arrival. This level crossing has two fairly loud alarms which each sound until the barriers lower, which are located on small poles just within the crossing boundary on each side.
Previously, this level crossing had no road warning lights (wigwags), but within a few months before recording, six LED wigwags were installed here. Each of these has a pair of long shades for its red lights only, one of these wigwags is thin, and three of these in total have had their red lights and long shades twisted sideways to be better visible for approaching vehicles, though these cannot be seen if stood up close to the barriers. Three of these wigwags on one side of the road are placed on top of concrete blocks, the bottom of the masts surrounded by a spiky anti-trespass layer, marked with yellow stripes, and they have very short supporting masts because of their elevation.
What's also unusual here is that each of the two full-road-width barriers has a large red circle in the centre of them, when these are only usually seen on manually-operated gates.
Thanks for watching!
