Also known as Gringley Road Level Crossing.
On-call / Request crossing located to the east of Retford town centre, in Retford, Nottinghamshire. This crossing is one which is only raised by request of a user. It remains in the lowered position until a vehicle or pedestrian pushes one of the plungers either side of the crossing, requesting the barriers to be raised. If no trains are due in a suitable timeframe, the barriers will be raised by the signaller. The crossing is usually only lowered again when a train is due, forcing the signaller to lower the crossing via CCTV. Until 2021, the crossing only had two barriers and two alarms, but a total of six warning lights (standard and narrow types) have been installed around the crossing. These only operate during the lowering sequence of the crossing and are off by default when the crossing is lowered.

I find that level crossing very odd light should be on when the barriers down then lights out when barriers raised not opposite why??????????

This is known as an 'On-Call' / on-request crossing (MCB-OC). It remains lowered by default until someone wishes to cross. They have to push a button and wait for the signaller to raise the crossing. As it is always lowered, the warning lights remain off and do not flash.

@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel ok fair enough but I still find it rather bit the barriers lowered the lights came on and off I still prefer old fashioned way lights CCTV barriers lowered then train arrives and leaves then barriers raised and lights out

WOW that's a loud and clear warning and I love how the wigwags are setup, it's unusual but wonderfully articulate. Are the long hoods over the lights to prevent light shining on them?

Yeah its quite a unique arrangement. I am assuming the long hoods is to prevent light glare into the nearby houses.

It's a unique request crossing, so it remains lowered by default until a user requests the barriers to be raised. The description explains more.

This crossing is raised on request by users so it remains lowered until someone wishes to cross. That's why the lights are off when the crossing is down.

This isn't a good video, with a bunch of people running to the crossing with their cameras. It really distracts and detracts from the actual crossing. [DISLIKED VIDEO.]

Well unfortunately I do film and visit crossings with other friends who also film, so I cant always get a clear shot of the crossing. I try my best.
