That man was a real hero for saving those kids. He made a huge sacrifice and he wasn't even the kids parents. He probably had a family of his own at home and he risked his life for those two kids. That's a real hero

He was a true-blooded railroad man, in the tradition of Casey Jones who told his fireman to jump while he remained with his engines. I worked in the rail industry for 3 years (maintenance of way) and you hear stories like this of unsung heroes who are faced with split second decisions that mean life or death and hopefully you make the right choice. I knew one old-time conductor who told me the story of how they were going thru a town here in Wisconsin and a car came racing up to the crossing ahead of them, trying to beat the train and the car lost. Turns out it was a guy whose wife was in labor and he was rushing to get her to the hospital. Dad died and the cop showed up and him and my conductor friend delivered the baby alive and healthy, right there in the car wrapped around the front of the train. Unreal but true.

What a great guy - 35 years old when this was filmed and willing to give up his life for those kids - amazing - hope he lived a happy life after this and would love to know he is okay and perhaps has kids growing of his own now.

To the foamers that'll saying "ThAt'S nOt CoNrAiL" The train in this incident was a Conrail however Conrail denied to take part in the reenactment nor did they want the film crew on their tracks despite the episode having their name in the title. Thankfully a nearby shortline Morristown and Erie didn't mind and had their ALCO C424 18 step in the role. The locomotive now resides at the Illinois Railroad Museum.

As a railroad conductor myself,I have seen many kids playing on the tracks. Parents PLEASE teach your children about railroad safety,that tracks are NOT play grounds. In the last 3 years I have told at least 8 kids to not play on the tracks 2 on another railroad in my hometown and the railroad I work at in another town 230 miles away from my home. Operation Lifesaver has an excellent,but graphic video called "Davids Run" Great job by the conductor,way to be alert.

NEVER underestimate the power of a train. As you saw there, even with an emergency application, that train required quite a bit of stopping distance.

Conductor should sue the family for not properly watching their kids AND the family should have their kids taking away for LETTING a 3 year old watch a 18 month old both are at the afe that they are dumb and don't know to stay away from tracks I got in trouble once for being on the road but that was because I was at 3 years old trying to catch up to my 2 year old cousin I had tried to get her to not follow her siblings and mine I forget where they went think grams who didn't live to far away from us but I knew to keep an eye and ear out for traffic I thought I could catch her before she got to far I had caught up to her when the grown ups realized we weren't in the yard my sister and older cousin was suppose to be watching us as they were 8 and 10 years old and knew better than to leave us alone especially my cousin who liked to wander off I never got on the road without somebody with me till I was 5 years old me and my cousin got in trouble but my oldest cousin got in even bigger trouble for leaving us alone I think we had a grown up watching us but think they had to go in for a few minutes

Rusty Nail true. The engineer can’t do a thing about it. For example, a train with 50 cars which is moving 40 miles an hour takes about a mile to stop.

Conrail was a railroad that was merged into two other railroads: Norfolk Southern and CSX. Conrail engines were blue with white lettering and stripes.

The engine in the reenactment was Morristown & Erie ALCo C424 number 18. Built in 1964 for TP&W as number 800 and then acquired by the M&E in the 1980s before being retired and sent to the Illinois railway museum in 2018. The Morristown and Erie locomotive was used in the reenactment because Conrail refused to take part in it.

Actually, all tracks have speed limits. They're based on the locations, curves, track conditions, type of material or cars on the train, etc., not just because the track goes through a residential area, although in some places that is the case.

I remember when I was little, we went to visit my grandmother in michigan. her house was not far from active train tracks. Our dad told us never to go near the tracks without an adult and we never did. We were too scared of getting in trouble.

There was a similar incident that happened in Indiana on the Norfolk Southern several years ago. The conductor actually stood on the boarding step of the lead unit and kicked the little kid off the track as the unit passed over. The kid had only a few scrapes.

Most of the photography with the train and the children, was done with long lens camera shots. Though appearing extremely close, thr train was actually a safe distance away. Plus, out of camera range were several people to pull the children to safety if something went wrong. I agree - it appeared very dangerous - Hollywood wanted it to.

The film crew could not film on the tracks where the incident actually took place; it was a busy double tracked line. The announcer states at the beginning this is a recreation using similar equipment. No, the recreation did not use a CR locomotive.

The conductor save the children's lives, not caring if he got crushed trying in the process. It is people like him that brighten up our world and show us that there indeed still is good left on earth. The mother did what any parent could have done, turned her back just for an instant. While she shouldn't have done it, I don't think any of us could be 100% above doing that. But I WILL NOT live near the tracks, worrying about pets and kids, not to mention a derailment spilling dangerous stuff.

I don't understand how these kids didn't hear the train coming. The horn alone is loud enough to give you a heart attack if you're not ready for it. The sound of an Alco 251 engine is also hard to miss.

I'm so glad the conductor was a quick thinker. 15 year olds have problems with the railroad in my area. One person I know almost got hit by CSX, but got out of the way at the last minute

Last December I was going to a train show when a CSX train was coming I heard running behind me a 13 year old boy trying to beat the train tripped on the tracks and was hit but he lived with only a broken leg and a skull fracture. It still haunts me to this day...

Man, Thank god these kids are safe. Iam a locomotive engineer for CSX. I've seen some stupid drivers at some crossings. i hope i never see anything like this!

The conductor is an amazing man. Not many people would have done that. Those kids were so lucky not to have been killed. Even with a fence the kids could still find their way out of the yard or go out of a door that is not fenced. Honestly, that's part of the reason I would be terrified to have children if I could have children.

"NEVER EVER EVER EVER play on the rail road track". 1 year old Scott and 3 year old Tod would've got ran over and Scott got little cuts and Tod didn't get hurt and Kate and Gray could've built a fence around thier house so Scott and Tod wouldn't go in the woods and the rail road track. Scott is 32 now and Tod is 34 now.

Part 2 of my post: I remember when I was young (2-5 yrs), I was AFRAID of trains, still I liked them. If I saw one coming I would get the hell away from the tracks and cover my ears. Trains are big, loud, and scary to anything that is that small. With all due respect, those kids had something wrong with them if they weren't even scared by the horn blowing which is loud enough to be heard from 10 miles away, and the thing coming at them which is 100x their size. The conductor should be rewarded.

Mother got lucky too these days the law would have taken her to jail for child endangerment and CPS would have taken them away from here regardless of if it was just an accident or even death. Hell my aunt went to jail just for walking a block down the street to pick up someone else's kids and just out of the blue a cop was passing by and saw the kids home alone but they know better ha my parents use to leave me home alone a lot at a young age I even learn to cook and clean on my own but back to my aunt, she had no clue what the laws were about leaving them alone just a few minutes it sucks though that the laws are harsher now in 2016.

Parents always keep an eye on their children very carefully no matter where you're at including the railroad tracks or you'll end up losing them just like the 2 toddlers did but survived without critical injuries

I hope this serves as a reminder to ALL parents to keep their toddler kids close and not to trust that they are OK alone. It may not be a train, it could be a car or their kids playing with matches. BE ALERT ALL THE TIME!!!

It’s been 34 years since this happened so Todd is 37 and Scott is 35 1/2 almost 36. We hear this happened on a Monday. This also happened 3 weeks before Memorial Day and 13 days before Mother’s Day. I grew up on a cul de sac in Fountain Hills, Arizona. I was terrified when I saw the train approaching Todd and Scott because I was afraid they were going to get hit. I was worried when I saw Scott get hit by the train but thank goodness they were both okay. I was 6 3/4 two months away from my seventh birthday and my brother Andrew was 4 1/2 at the time this happened, I was at school in kindergarten. Playing on train tracks isn’t good.

*Here, this freight-train crew worked as a team* to mitigate a situation that could have been far worse. Typically, the conductor and head-end brakeman ride with the engineer in the lead locomotive. At the low speed limit for the involved route, the engineer had enough time to slow the train to a safe dismount speed from the moment they spotted the two children at trackside - a matter of throwing the locomotive into full-regenerative and dumping the air from the train-brake lines. Sadly, doing fifty miles per hour on the high iron of a Class 1 road, a crew wouldn't have that option; fifteen seconds from tallyho to impact, another four-plus minutes before the train grinds to a halt. A. J. Smith at +Millenniumforce has documented his share of 10-50's rail-on-automobile where the track's rated max speed practically guaranteed the train blowing through the fouled grade crossing.

That is the worlds luckiest kid. Thank the Conductor who jumped off the train to protect the kids, thank the guy stopping the train, and at the end of the day thank God too (or at least the kids guardian angel). If not religious, say thank you to the Universe.

There used to be train tracks that ran behind the apartment complex that I grew up in and I remember all of the parents warning their kids to stay away from the tracks, period. To my knowledge, NOBODY dared disobey that rule. What is the appeal of railroad tracks to children? And another thing, a three year old, I don't care how sensible or cautious or obedient they might seem, they cannot be expected to watch a younger child. Heck, they need a sitter themselves! Whew!

having a fence is a plus but actually WATCHING your children while outside is a wiser decision. being a lazy parent is a pending disaster for children

I remember the police bringing my neighbors stray kids (4 and 1) home a few times. Their mom was usually too busy sleeping off a meth binge. I think the younger one is in prison now. Something about apples not falling far from their tree comes to mind.

I believe he pulled them off the rail and then ducked down knowing that he wasn't going to be able to get clear in time. Keep in mind that while the rails are 4 feet 8 1/2 inches apart, the trains themselves are about 10 feet apart, meaning that there is about 2-3 feet of overhang on each side. From what I remember in newspapers at that time, the train was almost on top of the kids when he was able to jump off and grab them, not enough time to get completely clear.

I remember that one! The temp was so hot, the mom said the temp sort of pushed you back inside. She called her friend while her kids were outside. She goes to check on them since they were not heard from in a few minutes. She finds them in the HOT trunk on a 100% day!! The kids were soaked in sweat. Big mistake was, that mom and her 2 kids should have been in a swimming pool nearby to stay cool. Drink lot's of water. Blast up air conditioning.

@firemanupton it depends on the train's weight and speed. if it is carrying ten cars at 10 mph, it would stop faster than a 50 car train going 25. the car's weight pushes the train farther down the heavier it is.

Those two kids didn't know any better. Todd was just 3, and Scott was God knows how drastically young. Logic and common sense don't set in for human beings until at least the ages of 7 to 8, and obviously the boys didn't have a clue about the dangers of playing on train tracks.

@blarrer20 According to news articles, the actual train was a Conrail. If you Google 'anthony falzo train', you can find links to several articles about the incident. I also read a communication from the conductor for the re-enactment that Conrail and NJ Transit wouldn't let Rescue 911 film on their property, which is why they had to film on Morristown & Erie. You can find that if you Google "(erielack) ENGINEER ON PILOT PICKS BABY OFF RAIL".

I'm just glad to see kids weren't hurt but there unusual lol my dads an engineer he says one pop on the horn usually scares the kids away but engineer Richard here from a distance if you look to close to the tracks dad just lays on the horn

Yeah...Too many people - for some inexplainable reason - wait for things like this to happen before they do the necessary safety arrangements. And it's amazing how there re-creations make you all tense and scared and emotional even though you know it's always going to be a happy ending. Damn, this series was awesome and most certainly saved lives by all these reminders and wake-up calls. I remember watching this a lot when it first aired when I was little.

Most likely, since the reenactment was on a different railroad, they just used that company's locomotive. Keep in mind that this was a weekly TV show. It would have cost them a lot of money to secure an actual Conrail train for the shoot and get the railroad to shut down operations so they could film that scene. So they found a railroad that wasn't as busy as Conrail that would let them film on their tracks without disrupting service.

It's a shame these days that not many people have empathy for others, no-one seems to care about anyone else but themselves, gradually all feelings of love and care are being obliterated. It's a shame that we have to "Look back" through the years to find love, empathy, heroes, and courage. I wish it wasn't so rare.
