Follow my rescue horse Romeo as he transforms from a thin Off the track thoroughbred to a healthy, promising showjumping prospect and eventer. You won’t believe his transformation in this horse before and after video! Rescuing a healthy young OTTB from slaughter has been a very rewarding and steep learning experience. I do my best, so I hope you can overlook my mistakes during his training.
Thanks for watching! This video was made in collaboration with my horse blog, Stable Talk - Your Trusted Source For All Things Equine. Whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or just starting your journey into the world of horses, we’re here to support and guide you every step of the way.

I bought a horse from the meat man (UK terminology ) was a 3yr old in a dreadful way feet like clogs, malniurished, ring worm, got bloods done luckily he was only anemic got that sorted along with his deworming, feet took a lot longer. Spent a lot of time out in the field with my others, he is now 8yrs old and we are about to start our 1st season at 3 star level in eventing. Please keep us all updated with your progress, and journey through life together 👍🇬🇧🏇🏇🏇

Sadly the racing industry is brutal, i grew up with my parents being big fans of this sport and them having friends that had a horse racing stable in Germany. These people started training the horses at 1,5 years old, and the horses started going to competitions at just 2 years, sometimes older (the competitions are pure stress for them, some even get their tongue tied to their lower jaw so that they are better to control 😢).They were in their stables 23 hours and had 1 hour of intensive training every day (definitely very depressing). All of this is sadly very normal in every racing stable. Mostly the horses have to stop their career at 4 or younger because of injuries like tendon ruptures and they are getting sold for very low prices or even brought to the slaughterhouse. When they come to the new owner, they are often very traumatized and hard to work and ride with. So they are getting sold and sold and sold, because no owner is able to handle them. At the end they are most likely to end up at the slaughter house.I feel so incredibly sad for these horses and i am so happy that you saved him!

"some even get their tongue tied to their lower jaw so that they are better to control". FALSE. Tongue tying is not for "control".🙄 One doesn't control a horse by tying its tongue to the lower jaw. "Tongue ties are designed to keep the horse’s airway open by preventing the soft palate from displacing. By holding the tongue in place, they ensure that the airway remains unobstructed, allowing the horse to breathe freely".

Horses deserve better than to be races. My mare is an OTTB and she hates bits so much. She also get really nervous and I got her when she was 15. Her owner worked really hard with her but then she got really hurt. 6 months later k pretty much have this horse with no muscle in the middle of winter being ridden every so often. Now (8 months after purchase) she is getting over her nerves, jumping 60cm consistently being ridden about once a week (or whenever my mom comes out) and we are making so much progress

My trainer bought a horse from her friend who had just rescued him from the slaughter house. She started putting my sister on him because she didn’t really have a horse that she got along with super well. They instantly clicked, and her and my trainer have been working with him, and he is now a thriving saddle seat horse (with a few problems ofc, but he is working on it)!! This was very inspiring, thank you!!!

You have done a marvellous job on his training and he clearly trusts you and is willing to try for you. His rearing & nerves will dissolve with time as he develops confidence in himself and experience with the sort of things he won't have met in race training (hacking away from other horses, being ridden out just him and his rider, collected movements etc.) he's still very young and your progress with him will take time and patience. I've had several TBs over the years (usually rejects from racing) and I've never met a "nasty mean" one; any giddiness with them is usually their nerves, they are often more reactive than say quarter horses and though their racing training will have taught them to load, travel, stand for farrier etc. they may never have been introduced to the sort of lessons a regular riding horse has by that age. All the best with Romeo he is a lovely horse and you are clearly a skilled intelligent trainer.

A wonderful job at this rescue horse rehabilitation for good health and training. Esoterically clear in this case means clear for a certain group.
