Rescue in progress along Route 66 for an endangered historical landmark in Oklahoma

The Threatt Filling Station was once the only African American-owned gas stop along Route 66. After being recently listed as an endangered historical landmark, the owner's family came to the rescue. Janet Shamlian reports.

I used to own land a few miles east of this station. Its good to see it being taken care of. There were lots of old Mom & Pop stations along 66 and some, like this one deserve protection.

Ed, you continue to make me proud! I'm excited to see something of my era with which I had/have a personal connection, become an indelible part of history. "A Safe Haven"! What a beautiful legacy! Imagine that during our lifetime there was a need for "A Safe Haven" for people who looked like us. Those who bypassed The Threatt Service Station thinking, mistakenly, that they could make it to their destination, only to find themselves 30 miles down the highway, in need of a "Safe Haven," were directed (need I say by whom?) to our home, also on Route 66. There are many such stories I'm sure will never be told, but thanks to The Threat Service Station for shining as a beacon for those who provided "A Safe Haven."

Luther, Oklahoma is named after Luther Jones he was the son of Charles Grist Mill Jones. Grist Mill was one of the early pioneers. Luther was a used car salesman in Oklahoma City. Somehow he met and fell in love with Ruby Darby she was known as the Queen of the Southern Oklahoma oil fields. She traveled around Texas and Oklahoma with a 16 girl burlesque show. Luther and her were only married around 10 months. She made it to the Ziegfeld Follies, and entertained the troops in Europe in World War I. Ruby was pretty wild she made it to Hollywood after the war Luther followed her out there. He ended up passing away in 1939. Jones Oklahoma is named after Luther's dad. You never know what you'll find when you research your family history.

Love the tv series but it really had nothing to do with the historic road but the name.

I seem to recall that only three episodes of "Route 66" took place in towns or cities where the actual Route 66 highway passed through.

@@WAL_DC-6B that seems about right. I don’t recall the name “Route 66” ever being spoken or shown in any episode. Very underplayed. It was used instead as a vague nostalgic reference to America “out there”, a modern day Kennedy-era space age western with a Corvette instead of horses.
