On July 17th, Martin revealed a surprise mystery guest during a livestream. It was a baby Swainson's Hawk that had arrived at the rescue center earlier in the day. During the livestream, the hawk sat silently in a small nest until the reveal.
A couple days later, Martin continued to feed the hawk, coaxing her to take food herself. She caught on quickly and once she took the food on her own she could be left alone.
She is doing well in a chamber, left alone as much as possible until she is ready to be released to the wild. Parents do little to "teach" or "prepare" young hawks. Instincts will kick in and give her the same opportunity as any other hawk to survive in the wild.

Our Mission
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

"I don't want to be emotionally connected to them" Except you are.... you love these creatures so, so much and it shows. You bring them back from the brink of death, and then you love them enough to return them to their home in the wild, where you will never see them again. I think that takes more heart than anything else.

11:41 the fact that she instinctively grabbed at her food (even though it was already dead) with her talon seems like a good sign to me. Since she will be doing her killing with her feet, it’s great that she already associates the notion of eating with first grabbing food with her talons.

So wonderful to follow up on this little beauty. She looks like she's almost ready to take on feeding herself if only those big feet would do what her mind is telling them to do. That coordination will all fall into place though won't it? Do all birds know what to do without their parents instruction? For example would a Robin or Bluejay know what to do? Thank you Tyner Family & Southwest Wildlife!!!

Beautiful little baby hawk. I have heard one 'theory' that birds can detect magnetic fields and that is how they know where to fly to. The way some birds raise their young is so interesting. In "The March of the Penguins" the parents incubate the egg rotating with the other mate who goes out to sea, risking their lives to fish to bring food back to their chick, fend off other penguins that may have lost their egg or chick, raise them to a certain age where they still look like big chicks....then one day the adults just leave them and go back to the sea! After all that work. Just incredible that they do that. Eventually the chicks go to the ocean and jump in, never having seen it before. Amazing.

Something funny happened this morning...We've got an Eastern Red Tailed Hawk living in our backyard oak tree...I hear it every morning, I'm pretty sure its a juvenile because for one, there's only one, and two, its still brown as opposed to that deep red, but I'm not an expert by any means, but what I do know is that hawks and crows are basically mortal enemies. Well this morning there's these 3 crows strutting around our neighborhood in the front, and I hear the rest of their murder screeching behind our house, and this goes on for like 30 minutes or so, I actually went outside to see what would happen, finally the hawk screeches and started circling, one crow took cover in our front oak and I think he/it told them all when the coast was clear, they were giving him the business, but this isn't the first time it's happened. Those crows are feisty...have to admit I miss having them in our yard, they used to greet me when I'd come home from work cause I talked to them (atleast I like to think so...never flew away from me) I also worry about the Hawk being in people's yards, we have dogs, and if it sticks around and finds a mate has chicks...everyone around here has dogs, so even though there's lots of trees, there's lots of dogs

Hello once again Martin your little baby swainson's sure is aggressive do you think that a swainson's could be used for falconry if the falconer was extremely experienced and what type of prey would you enter a swainson's hawk on

Martin, a question. Does the high number of rescues reflect a greater number of offspring in the avian population? Was the past winter milder or normal? If I were doing your work, I’d need to build a psychological mechanism to deal with the ones that don’t make it. That’d be reason enough to not name one or allow myself to become attached. I’ve had my pet birds die over the years and it never gets easier. I can’t imagine how you deal with it. Maybe the joy of the successful rescues is strong enough to endure the tragedies. Honestly, I exit the videos what it’s apparent that all hope is exhausted. One video showed initial hope and progress only to be found deceased the following morning . You’re brutally honest with your cautions and warnings but we’re still the hopeless optimists. BTW - Do you receive hundreds of hateful emails from the Rodent Lovers of North America? 😁

A high number of rescues is often due to weather related causes, such as hot weather causing young hawks to bail prematurely from the nest or high winds blowing the young out of the nest or destroying the nest itself. In the Central Valley of California, temps during June that reach near 110°, predictably result in rescue facilities being swamped with young hawks that were forced to leave the nest. Heavy winds will result in young barn owls, which often nest in palm trees, to end up on the ground.

mark moore Martin is in Utah. I’m not familiar with the climate there. I’m wondering if the population of young varies from year to year depending on a myriad of circumstances. I remember when bald eagles were facing extinction fifty years ago and they’ve rebounded remarkably. Have the other species of raptors risen or fallen in that same span of time? In San Diego, we’ve watched the nonnative population of parrots expand greatly in that same time frame. What used to be an unusual sight have become flocks of parrots everywhere. Fifty more years and they’ll appear to be as common as sparrows. I wish that I could see that.

@@ChrisHyde537 North American raptor populations such as bald eagles, osprey, and peregrine falcons were greatly impacted by the highly destructive pesticide, DDT, which was banned in the early 70's. These species' numbers have all rebounded nicely as a result and the peregrine is no longer an endangered species. Cooper's hawks numbers have increased dramatically over the years. What was once a shy, rarely seen inhabitant of forested areas is now a common breeder in cities and backyards throughout North Anerica, feeding on the abundant supply of pigeons and rodents. Some birds of prey, such as American kestrels and prairie falcons, have not been so fortunate. Their numbers as a whole, continue to drop, likely due to a number of reasons such as habitat loss, pesticides, increase in animals that prey on them or compete for suitable nest sites, etc.

Hi Chris, thanks for your interest. There are times numbers can note other issues, but mostly it is random. The bad days make the releases all that much better.
