It's awesome you could rescue him. Going by his behavior he has not been in that cage his whole life. Maybe has been for a while but not his whole life. He clearly has had some training and is pretty comfortable being outside of the cage and being on your arm. He also looks to be in pretty good health and taken care of. @@DERAMNONA Cracker's beak is fine. Might could use a little trim but it's not an issue at this point. If given the right things to chew on he might even do it himself. Parrots need toenail trimming a lot more often than beak trimming in my experience. His toenails look good from what I can see which is another reason I say he hasn't been caged his whole life.

I have a few concerns with this video....1. the macaw seems to be well treated (feathers, beak and overall look) and not neglected; 2.It is tamed and has obviously been handled by the previous owners or you wouldn´t even be able to touch it. 3. the new cage (even if temporary) is a hazard: chicken wire is a no-no - toxic and unsecure - and the wood will be destroyed. In a few days (or hours...) the macaw will be either poisoned or in the loose. Better keep the bird in the old cage (after duly cleaned) and give it some time during the day to roam around teh house with proper supervision. 4. You should not put the bird outside immediately. It needs to be transioned gradually. 5. The proximity with chickens is very dangerous (please investigate about mycoplasmosis, avian flu, avian clamydosis, etc) I am assuming you want the best for the macaw so please take the above into consideration

Honestly I don't believe most of what has been said. Sure, he has been neglected, but no way has he never been handled or let out of the cage. You should NEVER simply move an indoor parrot (which according to you has been living inside for 32 years) outside. They have to be gradually acclimated! They can literally die. Honestly if you fix up his previous cage and give it a good scrub he'll be better off (temporarily) than your outdoor cage. His beak also desperately needs trimming.

I agree that this all doesn't ring true. A bird that has been caged for 30 years, never been outside, never been handled would be very scared and not just step up on command. Look at the birds body language.... relaxed, calm, happy, feather condition is okay too. This bird acts and looks more like a family pet bird who needed to be rehomed.
@anserbauer309

Agreed. You have to wonder about whether or not this guy knows enough about large, tropical parrots to be doing this without a mentor. That aviary is made of softwood and canary wire. The bird's beak is strong enough to crack a macadamia nut; the hardest nut there is. It could demolish that flimsy little structure overnight. For someone whose family ran a parrot park, he doesn't seem to know very much or understand the importance of seeking out good advice!

Beak is fine. The bird is really, really tame and has been handled a lot! Calm and gentle, even walking on arms and shoulders with relaxed feet. This guy is pulling our leg big time, for internetpoints. He has absolutely no idea how to really care for animals (sticking an iguana in a tiny enclosure "to tame it" aka stress it out to the point it will no longer move at all because there is no place to run to anymore and call it "tamed"/ putting a macaw in a cage it can literally gnaw its way out in minutes if the bird wanted to, made of pressure-treated wood, which is toxic as well...). He should have let the chickens keep it! I hope this bird moves on to someone that actually knows how to care for parrots (when he is done with this video) asap!! (I got my macaw from a situation very much like this , and she had only been stuck in there for a few years. 5 years later still working on the wings that are almost glued into place. She gained about a pound of muscle from just being able to move, and lost the fatty layer she had all over from being so inactive and fed crap.)

@@muurrarium9460 not sure he is pulling our leg. If the bird was handraised, then it could easily have memory of that. I don't think he "rescued" him at all. Just a lie for clickbait and views so people will tell him he's a savior. That bird was not neglected at all, especially not for 32 years. His beak and nails are perfectly attended to; His nails must have been trimmed within, at most, the last 2 months. He is incredibly friendly; If he was a truly neglected bird, he would be hyper-aggressive. Parrots, especially large macaws like this BNG macaw here, are not only terribly aggressive when scared, but terribly violent as well. They will charge and divebomb and inflict serious damage that you'd never expect from a bird; Ripping skin and flesh and leaving you with stitches. It's not cute. I've seen birds, extremely docile birds, turn to little terrors just left in their cages for a month or 2, let alone over 3 decades? The bird would be unhandleable to the point that it may not even ever be able to be solved. On top of this, the guy clearly did no research on parrots before taking on the bird. The cage is wholly inappropriate; It's very unsafe due to the wood and chicken wire. Birds are very sensitive to what we call metal toxicity. Only very specific types of metals are safe for them (namely stainless steel), and any others, if their mouths come in contact with them, can cause sudden and fatal illness. Parrots explore and climb with their beaks, so this is a huge deal for a cage to be made of unsafe metals. When he put him in the cage, he immediately started using his beak to climb the sides and licking the sides. That's enough to be dangerous. The wood is very easy to chew for a macaw; He''ll make through it in days if not hours, leading to a potentially dangerous escape. Random plants were flung in the cage with no regard for if they might be poisonous for parrots specifically. Same thing with the wood in there. They didn't clean the cage out very well before moving him to it, considering reptiles and other birds who could carry potentially lethal bacterias were housed in there previously, and its outdoors so even more bacteria could've gotten in. Giving parrots peanuts still in-shell is also rather questionable as, unlike many other shelled nuts, peanut shells can actually be dangerous for parrots; Yet, shelled peanuts were the treat he chose. On top of that, im concerned he's actually feeding that as his main diet, because he showed no other foods but specifically pointed out the peanuts. Although good as treats, peanuts are not okay as a dietary staple and will lead to disease and a shortened lifespan. It's like a human having only french fries. He left the swing in from the old cage even though it was inappropriate ("grooming" perch, a sandpaper perch meant to file nails that doesn't work, and rather grinds down on the feet of birds). All of this is such easy knowledge you'd know if you just googled "parrot care" and scrolled for 10-20 minutes and yet, he has a BNG macaw, one of the most challenging species, and didn't know ANY of it? A mistake or 2 I can justify. But this many potentially dangerous, or even fatal, mistakes? This isn't a rescue.

Immediately, I can tell by the way he behaves that this bird is not aggressive. If he bites, or attempts to, it's because he's in an unusual environment and is frightened. I adopted a Timneh late in 2022 that had been kept exactly the same for 30 years: smallish cage, no handling, no toys and a rubbish diet. He tried to bite me every time I went near. A year later, he's a different bird. He has complete freedom to come in and out of his cage, with feeding stations inside and on top. He has toys. He now comes across and asks for head scratches, which he greatly enjoys. He talks and dances. He never bites through aggression, but sudden movements can spook him and he lashes out, but he doesn't actually bite - it's just a warning. Give Cracker lots of love and attention and he'll be a great bird. Blue and Golds almost always are. And massive kudos to you for taking him on. My son has a rescued blue and gold who had been massively mistreated and she now absolutely adores him.

I agree that there’s no way that Bird has never been handled or it would not be willingly climbing on his hand and not trying to bite him! It would be absolutely terrified. And the fact that it hasn’t plucked feathers and and has trimmed nails; it is in surprisingly good shape. I think the last owners gave some miss information to try to get him off their hands just because they didn’t want him because he was too loud. That is usually the first reason why people don’t want a bird that seems relatively Friendly is because they’re just too loud and too much work! It takes a special person to own a parrot. They are definitely not for everyone. But, I think he will have a great life with you, so thanks for rescuing him :) He definitely needed a cage upgrade and clean.

Glad you saved him from that other place but he does need a lot bigger cage than that. I would say at least 4 times bigger and with much heavy duty wire than that. That wire he can cut open in no time and the squares is so small it will mess up his feathers even more. Also don’t ever open up a cage outside if the parrot isn’t free flight trained. You very lucky he didn’t fly away. He probably shouldn’t be able to fly if he havent been out for 32 years, but don’t risk it. Please also check up on peanuts and aspergillous……it’s a deadly disease so peanuts should be avoided completley. Best of luck to you and your new buddy!

Even temporarily, I'm not sure that outdoor cage will hold him long. The wire is thin (he's gonna be able to snap welds and make holes in it or crush the wire all together) and it's made of wood, macaws naturally chew and shred wood so he's gonna let himself out sooner than one may think. Also, some of what was said doesn't seem to be true, a cage bound parrot of any species will not let you near them the way he did nor will they step up on command. This bird seems to have been a family pet that was just needing to be rehomed. Other than a few ruffled feathers and a slightly overgrown beak, he seems to be ok

I would suggest that he may not be as tame as it appears. He is traumatised and in shock so for the sake of self preservation he is not doing anything to cause a reaction. I also strongly agree with the concerns over this cage, parrots are, by definition buzz saws and your placing him in a weathered outside! wooden and thin steel cage with no knowledge of what both wood and wire have been treated with, is not what he needs at this point in his shocked state. I have no idea what your climate is like at present (I am in the UK), but he has been an indoor bird as well. I do applaud you for rescuing but I am sure you would want him to live and be healthier. You have taken on responsibility of a 5+yr old child who has just lost his people and life as he knows it. Any food changes need to be dealt with slowly and 60% should be fresh veg, fruit, some grains, herbs etc etc. It is a WHOLE lifestyle choice to adopt a child that lives as long as us but has constant demands and needs. I don't mean to sound preachy or a know it all but I rescued a young African grey parrot discovered loose near me whose owner couldn't be traced and as a veterinary nurse with avairy birds ( so had bird food etc), I ended up with a brand new daughter, who by her nature was directed towards the male sex as she matured i.e. was not keen on a full time mum, remodelled an entire house to her designs as caging, as you well know,( i.e. rescuing Cracker from his confinement), was not an option, for a hyper active child and who about 18yrs later I am still finding out things about their care and needs. It is hellishly difficult finding space in good rescues, I well understand, but I implore you to make his next start good by researching parrot care.

I would argue that this is a very well socialized macaw. Nothing says traumatized (just look at the eyes: totally calm and not staring into the void like they would). Yes, she will probably be testing his boundaries in a while (macaws love doing that to people), but judging by the fluid grace and and completely relaxed feet while being on him...that bird is used to this! (He should be covered in gashes is this was a stressed bird/ you know how their grip changes when they are worried, startled or scared) Thank you for hanging on to that grey (they are my all-time favorites, even when they are just about the hardest to keep interested in things because they are so damned smart /mine kind of run me ragged sometimes, trying to find new and interesting things for them to explore) and giving it the best life possible..

You can always adopt an older bird. If you know what you are doing...there are so many that need a second or 17th chance... I am 53, and my birds are already registered to go to a good shelter if I die. Their preferences etc. are already known and I can add anything noteworthy to their file for the next owners. My macaw is only 15 now (if the paperwork is correct/ she is a rescue), so unless something happens disease/accident she cannot recover from, she will certainly outlive me.

I have a green winged macaw for 40+ years. They can chew through the wood in that enclosure and escape. My boy eats a healthy diet and loves cooked chicken too. They are omnivores and eat fruit, vegetables, whole nuts in the shell. I feed Tropical Carnival by Brown’s for macaw. Good luck with Cracker!

as a macaw owner i can honestly say that those nails and beak have had some attention. and if that’s been his home indoors he’s not looking too bad. but how you moved him was so stressful for a bird that hasn’t been desensitised. the mesh is too small and he will eat through that wood. and then you open his door and don’t know if he can fly !!! mate… you need to do some reading !!

I think it's great that you are taking this on! I have raised birds for years, so a couple of tips for you: First, peanuts are not good for parrots at all. I know you are only using them as rewards for training, but even that is really too often, if they're even given at all. You can get away with giving it to them every once in awhile, but they shouldn't have them everyday. I'm not sure what kind of food you're feeding him regularly, and you probably know this already, but he should be getting both pellets and veggies daily. I feed my conure cabbage, carrots, and spinach most days. Never give avocado, chocolate, alcohol, onion, garlic, or similar. For treats, my bird likes nutriberries, dried hot peppers, sunflower and safflower seeds, as well as millet spray. Millet spray and seeds tend to be popular with most birds as treats. I also give him fruit as an occasional treat. He loves bananas and apples, as well as blueberries. These are another occasional treat (maybe a couple times a week) because of sugar content. I also agree with Amy Navarro to otherwise take it slow. I would also personally be a bit more careful about having him out of the enclosure without a carrier or harness. You know Cracker better than I do, but my fear would be that he could get spooked and fly away, and I would hate for that to happen.

This guy knows how to work with birds. I have had birds for the last 25 years. I first researched birds before I adopted one. The vet I took my birds had a large bird like Cracker. She fed him peanuts. She specializes in exotic pets.

@@fawkesthegreencheekedconur1559 Hi last week a cinnamon green cheek conure landed in my yard. I live in North East PA and it was going to be in the 30's overnight. After 3hrs my 14yr daughter got in to go in a cage. It wasn't listed on any missing pet sites, the S.P.C.A, etc.. a few days later the spca said it's ours. Not a 30yr commitment I would have made by choice but here we are. I have tried to find a sanctuary where it can freely fly but they're all caged here. In the meantime I'm giving it the best healthy happy calm environment possible. I keep getting contradictory advice on feeding. I keep the food dish full w/enriched conure food, and twice a day spinach, Carrot, grape, walnuts, pumpkin seed, 3-4 blueberries, n banana. It is not the entire fruit and nuts except the blueberries and I remove the uneaten portion after a hour or two. Most of it is played with or nibbled. I did a video veterinarian visit but he isn't a avian vet and said all thing considered it looks great. We think it might be a young bird because it bows and flaps for treats. I had a parakeet for 17yrs and the cage I have 3ft x 2½ft so it will do for a few weeks until I can get a larger set up. If you have any advice or suggestions please let me know. This was a very unexpected event and I want to do the best I can for our new buddy. Thanks

Parrot Jungle!! I was there twice; Once as a kid in the early 1960s and once in the late 70s. TRULY hope that YOU get to play a role in it. It's now apparently called Jungle Island. However, I noticed that it currently has flamingos but apparently NOT parrots of any kind! I truly hope that you get to develop something like Parrot Jungle again (or restore the parrot part of Jungle Island), especially since it was your family members that first opened it almost a century ago!!

It just looks to me like this poor gentle parrot who has been trapped in a cage for all these miserable years has just been trapped in a bigger cage! Let him out for goodness sake. He isn’t mean. He’s the most gentle soul I’ve ever seen. You should be letting him free to wander about your house and set up perches, good food, water and toy’s about your home so he can feel FREE and interact with you and especially needs other PARROTS also keep FREELY to interact/live with. Sure let him outside but he needs LOADS more space. That so called big enclosure you’ve got is still TINY.

Yes and no. My parrots have the run of the house / only as long as I can monitor them. They will gnaw electricity wires (my macaw bit straight through my computerscreen, just out of curiosity) But I agree this new cage is ridiculous: made of toxic material, too flimsy and way way way too small. The with/front part of the cage should be the debt/ sidepart (I hope I have the right words here?) and it should be at least2x as wide (front) Remember they will behave like toddlers with chisels on their faces... My cage is too small and it is the wingspan of a large macaw on the narrow part (side) and 2x that on the front... and only sufficient because she is a handicapped bird and can neither fly or stretch her wings. If she was a healthy one, twice the size at least! (And that is the cage for a bird that actually gets out of it on a daily basis!)

I sincerely doubt it. It's the people "who have been doing it all their lives" are usually the worst when it comes to better nourishment, larger cages, different ways of training etc.etc.. (I've had parrots for about 40 years ;D so I am allowed to say it) The "experts" tend to be petrified (no matter if it is dogs, horses, parrots or goldfish!) since "they already know it all, have seen everything" they stop researching and looking around.

It really makes me sad to see these beautiful and very intelligent beings trapped in a cage with no stimulation and nothing to keep them occupied and not able to spread their wings, people buy these birds as pets without knowing how much of a commitment they actually are, they require a lot of attention and time, I wish people would educate themselves and really think it through before getting a bird, as often they are a lifelong, full time commitment and get neglected because of this reason, i hope the bird has a happy fulfilling life from now on.

Look up "Bird Tricks" on KZfaq. They're great with all breeds of parrots! They train them and put on shows with their blue/gold macaws. Plus, they do consultations and help other's with training their parrots as well! They're great, i have 2 green cheek conure's, and watching their videos has helped me with them tremendously! The wooden cage will not hold Cracker for very long, as he'll chew through it in no time Also, the wire may be toxic to parrots and do damage to his beak when he starts chewing through it! The cage he came with is better for him, it just needs a good cleaning and rinsing out! Good luck with Cracker, i hope y'all have a wonderful new adventure together!! ❤🦜🦜😍

She is pretty bad at reading african greys though. ;) Love their vids but really, every parrotspecies is different, and she really misses the ball with some of them. Keeping an animal hungry (not starving, just hungry enough to be interested in more) is as old as the world to make it do tricks (the falconers did it in the middle ages...), very easy.
