I have one of these let down cats......... he's insanely perfect. I'm almost glad they abandoned him because otherwise, I never would have gotten him. I got him at about 1 1/2 years and he's 13 now. He SO SPOILED now, but still sleeps in my arms every night. We also got 2 kittens 3 years ago and he's done a wonderful job with them.

I just want to say her whole "conversation" at 1:15 was so heartbreaking for me, that I cried for like 5 minutes. She hisses, then immediately licked her nose and slow blinks, which to put it in human speak is " I'll fight back if you hurt me, but I don't want trouble. I'm tired and scared." I say this because this isn't feral cat behavior. This cat has definitely had previous owners. She hissed because she is scared, because her previous owners let her down and that would translate to a fear of humans, but she follows up after with the apology and de-escalation body language, which shows she has communicated with humans before. It's just heartbreaking to see a soul that doesn't want to fight, that has been forced to. A soul that has had to endure heartbreak upon heartbreak and still is trying to be non-confrontational. Thank you for helping her, and the many others.

"Most of the time, that scared animal in the shelter has a lot of love to give. They just need to feel safe." My cat, Zebby, was dumped at my vet because of a pricey surgery (that the previous owner had a hand in causing). He still to this day is afraid of most people, but I have never had a cat more affectionate. I remember at the vet's when I saw him the first time, he hid in a corner for a good while before approaching me. After he sniffed me, he just wanted some love, and I could see the kind of cat he was. Scared, stressed, but just wanting to be safe. I've now had him for nearly four and a half years, and I can't even think of a home without him. Every night we snuggle up, him asleep on my chest or cuddled into my arm. Every morning, a squeak when he notices I'm awake as he announces it's time for his morning cuddles. Giving this scared animal a chance changed my life. He's my world.

I love this channel. I found a kitten at the Honda dealership I work at. She looked to be about 5-6 weeks old, but the Vet said at least 9-10 weeks. She came right up to me and jumped into my hands. Skin and bones. Giardia and Roundworms, fleas, the works. A meow that melted your heart. Unable to keep her in our apartment due to financial inadequacies and inexperience, we had to relinquish her to the local animal shelter. I've been visiting her every day and she's doing very well. We plan to adopt her once her spaying and vaccinations are done. We kept her at our place for three days before we realized we just didn't have the money to treat her health problems and keep her comfortable. I haven't ugly cried in years, and this opened the flood gates when the animal control officer came to pick her up. I felt like I failed her, like I wasn't worthy of that kitten's love, of which she imparted on me without question or temptation. Dont worry, Koda. I'll be back to take you home when you're ready.

I rescued 2 “feral” cats (sisters) from an animal shelter about 3 years ago now. One (who I named Mrs Freddy Krueger cause she cut us so many times) has now become a lap kitty. She’s come so far. It’s like she’s a whole different cat from once she was. I’m literally so proud of her. She’s like my child. The other one however....still won’t let me touch her, although she loves begging for my food when I have some (chicken, bacon, but mostly chicken lol) and I give it to her, but she’s still mean as hell. Lol. Starting to think I’m never going to be able to touch her and I accept that. Although I still keep trying. And she keeps running away. But at least she stopped hitting me so I guess that’s something. 😁

2 years ago me and my mom were looking for a kitten (for our other 'teen' cat), we ended up with a rescue cat who was so scared of everything, as if she had severe PTSD. It took her a long time (couple of months) to settle in at her new home. The adoption center told us that she hated being with other animals and people, however, she is now completely in love with our 65kg dog and our other 3 cats (with us a little less, but from time to time she likes to cuddle on your lap). My mom lives next to a forest where she can play and live the life she never had - she lived 4 years in a bathroom and wasn't allowed to go anywhere else. Seeing her climbing up and down the trees while walking the dog is truly amazing. When I'm older and want a pet, I'll rescue one (or more, probably) too!!

I fostered a beautiful stray girl. I found three wonderful homes for her one after another. Each time she hid for two weeks straight and wouldn’t give the new families the time of day. When I would go pick her up she would run to me without hesitation. After the third home I realized that we belonged to each other. We’ve been together for three years now. I love her with all of my heart. ❤️

This reminds me so much of how my Bella was when I first brought her home. She had been adopted from a rescue for which I volunteered two years prior with her brother. They returned her because they said she was urinating on a variety of items in their home. Turns out she had idiopathic cystitis, a condition where the walls of her bladder will get inflamed causing her to feel like she needs to urinate, but not really having more than a few drops of urine in there to squeeze out. The cause is unknown, but in many cats it's stress activated. It was obvious once I got her home that she had, at a minimum, been verbally abused in her previous home. She would cower at the sound of a voice that was anything slightly above a gentle tone. It took her about 2 weeks to decide that I was not going to hurt her or yell at her. Her idiopathic cystitis cleared up, and she has gone on to become what I refer to as my velcro kitty. She is never more than a foot from me. Especially sad is that even today, 11 years into being in our home, she is still pretty afraid of my husband, who is absolutely gentle with all of our cats. She will accept pets from him, but only if I'm nearby to watch over the interaction. Further evidence that her verbal abuser was a male. Time and patience has smoothed out her interactions with the people in her life. She is an absolute joy, and deserving of all of the effort we have put in to getting her to this point. She wasn't supposed to wind up being my cat. The original owner surrendered her at an adoption event for the rescue. Coward in her crate. We knew then she was not a candidate to go into the adoption center. I brought her home, and I knew within a matter of weeks that I wouldn't be able to get her adopted because she would just be terrified through the process, so she joined the family. Best foster failure ever. And really, my only foster failure. She was meant to be a part of our family, and while I regret the two years she had to spend in a home that was not loving to her the way that she deserved, I'm grateful they returned her to the rescue for her second chance at happiness.

The adopters surrendered her brother 9 months later. he was always bolder than she was, and we tried to get him to surrender her brother at the time that they surrendered her. They refused. I do know he made it back to the safety of the rescue and was adopted into a new home. But seriously, if you're going to adopt, be willing to commit to working through whatever issues these precious beings develop. I am certain that not having her brother with her made her transition from her adoptive home to my home that much more difficult.

@@1940limited thanks! There really was no other alternative. She turned 13 in August, and in August of 2019, on her 12th birthday, she was diagnosed with small cell intestinal lymphoma. Cancer. But, as feline cancers go, small cell intestinal lymphoma is among the most treatable. She takes prednisolone, a mild steroid, everyday along with a quarter of a standard pepcid AC to protect her stomach. Every other Sunday she gets an oral dose of chemo called chlorambucil. She's tolerated it really well, we have another 4 months on this treatment, and then we do an ultrasound to check to see if she's in remission. Fingers crossed! And knock on wood.

@@NOYB6930 I was adopting a cat at a local shelter, when a big gray & white cat approached me & asked me to take him home, too. I didn't think I had room for another cat & told him so, apologizing as well. He haunted me, however, so I called the shelter to ask about him. I could adopt just him, they told me, but he had a litter mate in the shelter who'd been with him for 12 years - except when he'd been adopted alone then brought back 9 moths later, citing "incompatibility" as the reason for return. His sister spent most of her time, huddled in her cage, frightened & overwhelmed. I couldn't split them up again,, so I adopted both of them. In the 4 years I've had them, Applejack has become a real sweetheart, & Ashera, a spoiled goddess. I don't regret having adopted them, as I believe that for as long as they'd been together, it would've been detrimental to Ashera to adopt only Applejack & leave her at the shelter. Every time I find them cuddled together, I'm so glad I brought both of them home. Today, February 21, 2021, Applejack & Ashera turn 17. Both are in good health & appear to have years of life ahead.

Wow, this is basically the story of my Mäuschen 😍😢 She too had been found in a cat carrier by some trash bins and taken to our local shelter, where I met her about three months later. The shelter staff had named her "Maus" (=mouse) for her brownish-grey fur, and she was really shy. She didn't get along with the other cats in the big cat rooms, so she was sitting in a (thankfully pretty large) cage, but she wasn't trying to get my attention by meowing and rubbing against the cage door like the other cats - she just sat there, wide-eyed, not reacting to my attempts at gaining her interest. She seemed utterly overwhelmed by it all, having lost her old home, finding herself in this new noisy and crowded place... Seeing that I myself had just had to drop out of my job with severe burnout and had to adjust to a totally changed situation and prospects, I felt I could relate very much. The fact that I had a habit of calling any adorable animal I met "Mäuschen" (=little mouse) and she was already named "Maus" was the cherry on top. I sincerely believe we were meant for each other. So, after bullying my partner into agreement ( ;P ) and persuading my landlord to allow me having a pet, I finally adopted her. She came out of her shell somewhat as soon as we arrived home, but she was still shy and sometimes skittish. Over time and with lots of patience and gentle encouragement (and bribing with treats), she became more and more confident, first cautiously turning into a lap cat if I sat perfectly still, then fetching me and demanding for me to lie down in bed so she could make herself comfortable on my belly. She has not only stopped hiding under the bed when our doorbell rings, but has actually taken to going and checking out our visitors and getting herself some scratches from them. She has turned into a very beautiful, headstrong, peculiar, manipulative, cuddly, and incredibly loving girl. It's been a little over three years now, and I haven't regretted adopting Mäuschen for a single second. I haven't regretted all the money I've spent on cat toys she has absolutely no interest in, nor on vet visits, medications, and special diet food for her various health problems. I don't even regret the heartache of knowing that she won't be with me for much longer, or the hole in my heart that I know she will leave behind when she passes on. If I regret one thing, it is that I didn't meet her sooner and got to spent only so few years with her. She has been my faithful companion through a very difficult time, my little ray of sunshine on every single day, and a reminder of everything good and worthy in the world. I would do it all again in a heartbeat. So here's my message: do consider adopting and adult cat. It's worth it. And they deserve it.

@@1940limited Aww, thank you so much for caring. Yes, my sweet little girl had cancer - a huge liver tumour, inoperable. I did everything I could to give her the best time she could have wished for, and I think I did well. But sadly, a little over a month ago on Christmas Day her time came, and I had to say goodbye to her. As you can imagine, it broke my heart, and I miss her terribly every single day. But I have her ashes at home with me, light a candle for her every day, and I have a necklace with a little pendant that contains a bit of her ashes so that I can carry her close to my heart. She was a very special and loving little girl. And yes, I am sure at some point in the future I will adopt another cat, but not right now - her loss is still too fresh and raw, and even though rationally I know it's not true, I would feel as if I was replacing her, and I just couldn't bear that. Besides, even though it may sound crazy, I think that maybe me and her were meant to spent this limited time together: I came across her at a time when my life was in a huge and scary upheaval, and I myself needed rescuing just as much as she did. We grew close, we helped each other cope and had lots of love to give each other. And just when my life issues finally started resolving themselves to the point that I can make a new start, her life came to an end, albeit far too soon. So maybe I am meant to really start fresh, without anything or anyone but myself to think about; and once I've settled into whatever I am going to do next, I will be able to open my heart again for another cat in need of rescue. ❤

@@h0n0lulu83 So sorry for your loss. I now am in a situation where my sweet boy has lung cancer and I'm doing everything to give him his best life ever, knowing that despite that I can't change the ultimate outcome. I understand the notion that getting another cat right away can help ease the pain of such a loss but for me, its ok to allow some real time to mourn and thus honor the one you just lost - alone. Its not always about having a pet but having "that" particular pet and that particular relationship that can never be duplicated. The potential comparisons getting another cat right away might bring wouldn't be fair to that new cat. It took me quite a few years after the loss of a cat before I could fully love the one I have now and I only have him because he literally forced himself into my life. I'm positive it will and should take a very long time before I can fully love another cat when my boy goes...

Anyways we dropped her off at the shelter because we wanted her to get adopted (im allergic to cats so that's why we didn't take her right away) but in the end we felt so bad so we just said screw it and took her home.
