Rescuing AMD CPUs - Stress Test Temperatures and PBO
PBO: AMD Ryzen Precision Boost Overdrive
Tjmax: maximum junction temperature
Please know that the AMD 8000-series CPUs have fewer PCIe lanes. This means if you add a discreet GPU to your rig, it will run at 4x maximum (not 8x and not 16x like most other modern CPUs). It also means if you add a Gen5 NVMe drive, the CPU will only support it at Gen4 speeds maximum. Those missing lanes are used to give you better integrated graphics performance built-in to the GPU. This is basically, in my opinion, a console CPU. With the price and limitations expected in an XBOX or PlayStation.

My first and last AMD was an AMD DX100 in the 90s - I never indulged in any AMD products ever since. Besides, I never overclock and use mainly iNtel Pentium PRO CPUs followed by XEONs. I don't do games, mainly photos, music, and videos. Currently running a dual XEON 2697v4

I believe iintel has simarlar power targets to maximise frequency. Bit of an arms race between intel and AMD at the cost of excessive power and heat.

I'm running an AM5 7700X. This is obviously just my own anecdotal info with limited parameters, but testing with only Cinebench 23, I get sightly better scores with PBO under volting all core. I also set max temp to 93. Not huge gains ... stock runs are in the mid 19000 and with PBO tweaks I'm up to 20100 - 20300 (highest I've seen was 20506). I think I got really good silicon ... never had any RAM issues, training has always been fast and stable. Thanks Carey for your hard work and contributions to the community ... DT

Please do the same test with current Intel CPUs, I’m curious for the results. I only have AMD desktops at the moment. I do undervolt them with 0,1 Volt, PBO on and the 5950X systems stay cool with a Scythe Mugen 5.

Intel boards from Aus, Gigabyte have Multi-core Enhancementt and MSI calls it Enhacned turbo and I believe is enabled by default. "MultiCore Enhancement (MCE) allows the CPU to run at the maximum turbo frequency on all cores, regardless of how many cores are in use. Typically, the boost frequency varies based on how many cores are being used". It uses more power and can increase heat during stress testing and normal use.

Hi Carey, with Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series this is normal behaviour when running sythetic benchmark. Best is to probably set the preset of 85c with -30mv in this case on that board, and a simple stock cooler isn`t great for these cpu`s aswell.

@@CareyHolzman yeh these kind of temprature`s might confuse people a lot. For example i myself have a 7950X if i run a cinebench r23 10min throttling test tempratures reaches 93.6c @ 5.5-5.7 Ghz all core, and that is on a 360mm AIO with a offset mounting to improve cooling on the CPU`s hotspot. and PBO2 set with a +200mhz on the cores but also with a max -30 all core curve optimizer undervolt.

its only the G series cpus that do not support Gen 5. It was the same thing for the earlier G serious processors. The 5600G and 5700g do not support Gen 4 only Gen 3 so this is not a new thing. When they put in the extra graphics something has to be taken out. There is just so much space.

Yeah but if you add a GPU, it will only run at 4x instead of 16x. These 8000 series processors are good for an Xbox or Playstation. Not much else.
