Residence Tax - biggest mistake for foreigners

It’s extremely scary to be living in a foreign country and unable to pay your bills. A lot of foreign residents here don’t expect that in their second year, they start getting bills for residence tax and their health insurance has suddenly increased. Also worth noting: each prefecture and ward/city taxes you differently, and your bills are based off your income, so there is not one standard price for everyone.

I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

@@christianalawal3695 The crazy part is that those advisors are probably outperforming the market and raising good returns but some are charging fees over fees that drain your portfolio. Is this the case with yours too?

It's interesting how much residence tax doubles, based on salaries that do not increase, and how the government can't figure out why foreigners do not want to pay it.

I have lived in Japan these last 21 years. That residence tax and medical insurance is based on your income. If your income goes up, those payments go up too. Yes, if you are not a regular employee but a freelancer, these amounts will not be automatically deducted from your salary and you will have to save money out of your freelance earnings to pay them. Don't forget the national pension payment too. Last I checked it was around 17000 yen a month. If you don't stay long in Japan, you can get some of that back in a lump sum when you leave. I remember I worked freelance for about 9 months before I got a regular job. Years later, they came at me with a demand to pay pension contributions for those nine months. Question: do you get hassled for those tatoos when you go to a sentou or onsen?

So which bills are required and not required. I have military insurance issued in america that I can access at military bases throughout japan, so would I need health insurance in japan really?
@franklinthewoman
@franklinthewoman 5 жыл бұрын
I assume you’d still have to pay residence tax if you have a visa and don’t live on the military base, but you should check with your job about health insurance! Some companies want to see proof you have insurance before you start working

Hey I'm thinking about going to Japan on a visitor Visa and then turning it into a work visa what was the process like for you?
@franklinthewoman
@franklinthewoman 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! In a nutshell I started interviewing for jobs and some places reject you off the bat and tell you to apply from your home country 😂 it is definitely possible though! I had to do a visa run to Korea once because the tourist visa ran out. I had already submitted my COE before my visa run but immigration still said I had to leave japan temporarily. The whole COE and visa process took about 3 months because Tokyo immigration is really busy. If you go to another prefecture I’m sure it’ll be faster. I have another video about that process: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9l3ddto3tLeomQ.html But lmk if you have any other questions!

At least $5k! When you start working you’ll have to wait at least a month to get paid since salary is monthly here. And moving into an apartment could be costly. I rented an apartment on a month to month basis to start but then when I signed a contract I ended up paying ¥250,000.

Are you from the US? Do you file taxes with the IRS and do you pay taxes to the IRS? I know that US and japan have a tax treaty and so if you pay more in japan, you don’t pay taxes to the irs. Ugh I’m confused cuz if I mess up, I don’t wanna go to jail.
