Before I kick off the Resident Evil Retrospective properly with the first game on Playstation, I want to give my thoughts on the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3, a game I enjoyed...but I don't think it lived up to the masterful 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2. So let's find out why.

It was bad enough that the buildup to Nemesis was gone, but his intro consists of him breaking through a wall, then stopping his pursuit when a shelf was pushed at the foot of a door. That's not even counting the non-game play segment of holding the stick forward to let the cut scene play, compared that to Jack and Mr. X just being thrown into the middle of the game, making you panic because you have to control the situation and escape them with your own knowledge of the game. Nemesis also kind loses his persistent and oppressive threat in the story when we constantly see him being undermined by Jill action-wise and verbally, even in the beginning it sounds like she's already tired of him being there which kinda removes the fear of being a target, which is something the original does much better, this should kinda be her attitude near the end when we as the player fully understand and know how to deal with Nemesis to the point where he's an annoyance, Leon and Ethan didn't start calling Mr. X/Jack names or getting tired of their shit until the end where our skills reflect our effect on the game

Its the femenist narrative that they have to include in their games these days, all female characters must be badass, take no shit, foul mouthed and constantly saying the F word, never sense any fear nor threat by the male antagonist (nemesis). a cliche which we see being used constantly regarding female characters these days.

@Jaegar19Ultima Making Brad a brave lad was the worst for me. The whole RE1/RE3 lore was how he was a coward and a pussy, the way he is represented on RE3R is like he never abandoned the S.T.A.R.S back at the mansion because he got spooked.

I think the worst part of this game is that it cut literally 60% of the content of the game it’s remaking: In the original, the city itself was three times bigger, there were tons of puzzles, and you also got to explore a beautifully designed clock tower, a creepy park with a graveyard, and it all ended in a gross, rusted disposal plant where Umbrella melted down its test subjects. On top of all of that, they left out the live-selection moments that allowed your decision to alter how the game played out in multiple places, which were core to the game’s identity. They cut out so much the game barely resembles the game it’s remaking. On its own 3make’s a decent game, but it barely even has enough of the original game to merit being called a remake. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the original, though, if you ever get around to it!

Yup. The game released in 1999, which was only a repurposed spin-off, had more substantial content than this 2020 release. I am still not over how you got to see more than half the city in the fucking demo. Hell, watching Boundary Break proves way more was planned, but got cut out for who knows what dumbass reason. Then there are the characters. Jill becoming a generic action movie chick doesn't need any more explanation, but others do. Brad getting infected by a random zombie and not killed by anenesis was fucking dumb. Nicolai not making even a token attempt to hide that he was a backstabbing asshole. God, Nicolai was even more of a one-dimensional than Chief Irons in RE2make. And naturally, there is Nemesis barely being a credible threat. God, what a disappointment.

Missed opportunity in this game for me is how it established Jill had PTSD from RE1.... but it was only in a dream and not focused on in the game itself. In my opinion delving more into the psychological trauma Jill had endured would’ve went a long way in making RE3 more memorable.

But Jill never had PTSD to being with, thats just a theory that some delusional person created when the first trailer for the remake came out. If she had PTSD she would never had formed BSAA with Chris, never would had went on her own missions or with a partner, because she would be a hinderance with her PTSD episodes. If anything, after RE1 she got even more determined and focused on her mission. A person with PTSD would never do that, thats the whole point of this disorder. That bathroom scene on the remake was just that, a nightmare. Something she just brushed off like anyone would do.

Capcom didn't made that remake out of their love for the franchise, they only made it because some fans was making some kind of remake for it, so they didn't wanted to lose money, striked them with a cease and desist and made it themselves. The bitter truth is that in the hands of those fans, the franchise would've been given 100% more respect and love. And all the people praising RE2R as their lord and saviour isn't helping things either. It just sways capcom even more towards erasing the classics even more. Now that they made a new protagonist with 0 charisma or backstory, a character that doesn't even makes sense and shitting on the old ones, they're even adding werewolves into the mix out of nowhere. They're really hellbent on destroying the franchise.

Even if I have never experienced the original RE2 (which I actually felt was flawed, so this is not meant to worship it), I still would have been ticked off by the RE2 Remake’s broken/unfinished campaign structure, scarcity of default ambient music, and some traditional recurring enemies being absent. Rather than doing everything right, I would rather describe the RE2 Remake as “doing enough things right or better that it is still worthwhile, in spite of a few other things being cut or downgraded”.

What happened was that the RE3 remake was being developed along side the RE2 remake by a separate team hired by Capcom if I remember correctly. They were basically developing the game along side RE2 but had to wait for that game to finish up because that was the foundation needed for the project. So even if it had a dev time of 3 years it basically fully was in development after RE2 came out. It didn't get enough actual time to cook in the oven due to Capcoms deadline and remember, entirely different smaller team seprate from the main RE team. We know this because before even RE2 remake came out a leaker leaked that RE3 remake was also in development along side 2.

My biggest issue with R3make was the city section and the demo was 50% of the game. In the original you had this spralling city that you traversed through: finding keys, exploring alleyways and finding survivors. the city was a character in itself, you saw the outcome of 30 days of an outbreak before Jill tried to make her escape. The expanded hospital and new lab were cool and admittedly better than the park and the water treatment plant of the original, though. However, they also left out the clock tower. Most, if not all, of the issues could have been fixed through dlc or rebuilding the game, but capcom decided to put all their effort into a garbage online game.

That's almost every game in a nutshell. Almost every videogame protagonist canonically never gets hurt. Assassin's Creed even plays on this topic. Every time you get hurt, you start to "desynchronize" because your character canonically shouldn't be getting hurt. It was a pretty clever mechanic at the time AC came around.

@@casdomdomcas5214 To clarify, RE2Remake Mr.X was like classic RE3's Nemesis but just a bit better at that job. While RE3R's Nemesis is basically just Classic RE2's Mr. X, when people were hoping he would be RE2R's Mr.X but EVEN BETTER. Meaning, people hoped he'd be even LESS scripted and more intimidating. But the Approach they made for him, actually limited him so much that his impact in the game from a player's perspective is less than Mr. X's. So now people have more of an attachment to Mr. X than Nemesis as a character.

@@casdomdomcas5214 Look he was scripted and there was places he couuld not follow you or enter BUT: When he appears he stays on the RPD the entire time fucking you up, and untill you learn how to deal with him, he's a headache. Nemeses will ONLY appear in two small segments where he chases you and you have to be careful around him, and even so, it's easier to go around him. After that,e very single segment he appears is fully scripted. That's the difference. Mister X only fully scripted where you have no choice BUT to fight him, is at the end of the game, when he appears and you have no choice but to fight. So, what people want to say is: Nemesis is not as scare as Mr. X on RE2R because Mr. X do give you trouble and make you aware of him constantly while on RE3 after you go around nemeses, he won't show again. Of course, I love the OG Re3 and when you see they changed for the worse RE3R instead of sticking with the defining features, and when people break the bounds and you discover there's more places you can play but somehow they were cut for some reason you can see why Capcom didn't want this team on RE4R.

-Too much cut content -Game is way too short, you can complete it within 4 hours -Nemesis is too scripted -Nemesis is too easy to take down at the beginning. 1 hand grenade or 1 exploding barrel brings him down -Nemesis is a joke, he has multiple opportunities to kill Jill but instead tosses her off to the side almost every single time -Jill and Carlos should have had separate campaigns similar to Leon and Claire -Jill doesn't even revisit the police station and see her old office -Raccoon City's exploration layout is consisted of 2 streets and like 2 alleyways. It's too small and linear -Practically no puzzles -The infamous "you want STARS I'll give you STARS" line was used as a throwaway line at the beginning where the majority of players don't even hear the full line because Nemesis just attacks you and interrupts the dialogue -No extra modes or costumes like what RE2 had -NO. FUCKING. MERCENARIES

*My list of issues, big and small, would be similar to yours:* -Materials for crafting bullets and grenade launcher ammo are segregated, limiting players’ decision-making. -That subplot where Nemesis foils Jill’s escape at the clocktower, by shooting down the U.B.C.S. helicopter, is cut out and shoddily replaced with an RPD helicopter exploding for no reason at the beginning. -Almost no alternate costumes, and the figurines no longer have animations, for some reason. -You cannot immediately use recovery items if inventory is full, nor can you put down items to pick back up later, like in a few previous RE games. -The intro and ending is very dumbed down, especially for the opening battle scene. -There is a low quantity/variety of special items dropped by Nemesis and lack of an alternate shotgun to use. -No crows, spiders, Gravedigger larvae, and Brain Suckers (it could work better to have the new enemies be in addition to those four original enemies, rather than as a replacement). -Nemesis transforms into a feral beast way too early and skips over his damaged multi-tentacled human form, his actual final form becomes overkill as a result, and the adult Gravedigger(s) became absent (I would have liked the redesigned Hunter Gammas in addition to the Gravedigger, but not as a replacement for it). -Likewise, the expanded hospital and new warehouse/laboratory areas would have been fine to have, but not as a replacement for the clocktower interior, park interior, and most of the Dead Factory. -The Lickers, Zombie Dogs, Drain Deimos, and Hunter Gammas are underutilized. -No branching paths in the campaign (which could have even helped the remake have its cake and eat it too, such as how Brad dies, whether Jill/Carlos explores the RPD, etc.). -There is no penalty for using infinite ammo firearms on your campaign score, making a lot of of the other unlockable tools utterly obsolete, once you buy the infinite rocket launcher. -Some of the Nemesis forms' abilities and stats are not scaled well with the varying difficulties and how overpowered those frag grenades and explosive barrels are. -Little to no puzzles. -No Mercenaries Mode or new singleplayer bonus mode to adequately replace it. -Raccoon City’s uptown and downtown areas are far too linear and on-rails.

I firmly believe RE2Make could've used another year of development to properly add B scenarios, and RE3Make could've used at least another year to add stuff like the Clock Tower as another area to be chased by Nemesis like the Downtown area, a revamped Live Selection system, and Mercenaries mode, plus some change-ups they could've done for players of the original like Mr. X in RE2Make.

@@Marcustheseer Doesn't make any sense considering how they did the remake for RE1 in 2002 which is the most faithful to the original. If they're going to remove every feature from the original as well as certain things in the story such as locations, enemies and puzzles then they have to compensate by adding other things to balance it out. There's no point in making a remake if you're not remaking it. I guess you can pass RE3 off as a re-imagining rather than a remake because a lot of story elements playout differently but even then it's still inferior.

But thats not how the T-Virus works. This thing about how a person turns into zombies by only a bite or a scratch is something that horrible RE movie came up with and all the other pop culture zombie movies. Umbrella wanted a virus that had to be highly-contagious to the point of infecting an entire target population and guarantee a 100% mortality rate, but such thing was impossible because if it was this contagious and lethal, it would kill the subjects too fast and would stop further spread of the virus. So, they designed the T-Virus in a way that it wouldn't kill the subject with a single wound so it would propagate further and mutating when the subject experience organs failure and/or severe brain damage. In other words, a person only turns into a zombie if he dies, turning back to "life" to continue spreading the virus, leading to murderous aggression and an obsessive hunger to the state of cannibalism. Of course, there is also something called "viral load", which means that if someone gets a huge load of the virus he would die from it, but it had to be injected directly and not through saliva or a break in the skin. Jill got this viral load when Nemesis injected her directly with his parasite. And there is also a mention of this on the Outbreak Files #1/#2. While Umbrella discovered that a statistical 10% of any population is naturally immune, there is no way to know who is and who isn't because of the fact that a person only turns into zombies when they die. Thats why Umbrella made the Hunters, to kill the survivors because they don't know who is immune and who isn't. It was faster than making a strain of the virus with 0% immunity. Also, in RE5, Wesker controlled Jill through the T-Virus still present in her system. It was just supressed because of the vaccine Carlos injected her. This means that Jill was infected and if she had died before getting the vaccine, she would turn into a zombie, so she wasn't immune. So, yes, they can get bitten and still survive the virus if their wounds get treated immediately and they don't experience any kinda of shock, like heart faillure or blood loss.

Its interesting that these remakes have swapped the iconic aspects of Nemesis vs. Mr. X in gaming publics eyes. Basically, when the originals came out, Nemesis overshadowed Mr. X entirely and became such an iconic part of RE where even people on the outside were aware of him, and he got guest appearances all over too. Now with the remakes, especially when so many people got into the series through these games, Mr. X will be living that legacy from now on. He will be the one everybody remembers, he will be the one that fans will want to see as cameos in games like the Capcom VS. series. I don't understand why the beginning of this game moves so fast through events. Basically Nemesis is introduced immediately but is not threatening because you're basically watching a cutscene and the game just started so how bad can it get? Brad is dead like 3 minutes in, then you meet Carlos who takes you in the subway. I understand not having the original's loose structure, and I understand just having a lot going on, but something about this intro feels off and the game doesn't exactly get more coherent or satisfying from there. It's just kind of a constant drone of 7/10 in your ear for like 10 hours

well as you will find out when you finish the original Resident evil 3. the remakes biggest critic is that it's much shorter than the original with some areas being shorted or cut. when RE2 remake had almost everything from the original+ more. and capcom called it a finished product when it had already cut some areas of the original, and had had a Fraction of the content compared to RE2 remake. it's clear That capcom wanted to sell RE resistance more and slaped this remake on as a second priority. or thats how it feels like. well it works well as a kind of RE3 Abriged version

Im such a fan of the original RE2 it was extremely hard for me to forgive how they didnt add in a revamped classic inventory menu or how they screwed up the scenarios to the point that the story between Leon and Ada seemed rushed, and unbelievable. Four other things they cut out that really got on my nerves were the sewer Spiders, the actual gun fight with the alligator, the removal of the moth boss in the laboratory, and the intro cgi scene for the licker. These things really left a bad taste in my mouth considering how well the first Remake of Re1 was. For me after all these years a Re2 Remake had to top what the first Remake did but also like Re3 it lost the flare that the originals brought to us back in the 90's. It wouldnt have hurt Capcom to add more scenes between Ada and Leon building up to their feelings they had for each other. That was the most disappointing part!

The original had more enemy types, locations, and story change where if you go to certain locations that you have enemy characters or items change locations if you take different routes in other playthroughs. It's one of those games that everything changes based decision making which can make it easier or harder later on which the remake is lacking.
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 3 жыл бұрын
One thing that is disputable, though, is the number of enemy types... Although the RE3 Remake left out the Brain Suckers, Sliding Worms, Infected Crows, and Giant Spiders, it added in Lickers, Pale Heads, and Nemesis Parasites. Plus, the Hunter Gammas in original RE3 were barely more than a re-skin of the Hunter Betas with a different kill animation, while the remade Gammas behaved like a unique new enemy. So speaking strictly in terms of the roster, the remake cut four enemies, but at least added four new enemies, which is more than what I can say about how RE2 Remake cut enemy types. However, it still fails to live up to RE1 Remake, which both retained all of the old monsters and added new ones. For me, the biggest problem is how half of RE3 Remake’s enemies are barely in the whole game. Meanwhile, the original RE3 gave the zombies, zombie dogs, crows, Drain Deimos, Brainsuckers, sliding worms, and Hunters all prominent time to shine, with the spiders being the only enemy that felt limited to a select few rooms. It helps too that Mercenaries mode and the campaign randomization allowed more occasions for certain enemies to appear.

I think its just that they still have "safe" areas in the game that he can't go into so the player isn't too overwhelmed. However he does go into 1 of the Save Rooms, so perhaps the toy store is "conditioning" the player to assume that Nemesis plays by the rules, so that him going into a "safe" area later would be more surprising. But that's just a guess.

@luminasdiary
@luminasdiary 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a valid point. I mean technically it's roughly the same length as alot of other RE games taking about 3-5 hours. However the shorter RE games always had great replay value. I constantly replay Remake, 0, 2, 3, Re2make. However RE3make, I have no desire to play that game again any time soon. I liked the game, but the way it's designed, doesn't offer anything for repeat playthroughs. In that sense the game is short...
@GBDupree
@GBDupree 3 жыл бұрын
It likely has to do with 2 factors: 1. 2 remake had a few areas removed from the original, but still felt okay in length, though people hoped it'd be longer, but replayability helped it a lot. HOWEVER, 3 is not only shorter than 2, but also cuts out a lot more from the original than 2 did. Making it seem noticeably shorter by direct comparison to a game that already felt short AND has no side content at all. 2. The game design itself makes it feel shorter. since the game has so many setpieces and linear design that constantly pushes you forward. This means that even on your first playthrough, you will be coasting through the game at the same pace you would play through 2 on your 5th playthrough, and the game rarely if ever allows you to just explore at your own pace. its much more linear too making replays more same-y and then you start noticing other parts of the game that are lacking that way. For instance, the more you replay it, the more you notice the majority of your time isn't playing the actual game, but playing set pieces. So more of your time is wasted not playing the game. So in your mind, when you only think of the gameplay sequences, and remove the setpieces, the game is even shorter. So basically, the game is already "only" 1 hour shorter than 2, yet the percentage playing it as an RE game versus playing it as an Uncharted game is significantly less. So if you think about it, its more like 2 hours shorter than 2, and its only a 2 and a half hour game. That's short enough to be 10 or 20$ DLC for most people.

Well said across the board! What's funny about RE3 is that it actually never went for a horror feel the way RE2 did. That game was always a bit more action oriented, but what made the first game work so well was the fact that Nemesis is constantly driving that action all throughout the campaign, right down to stalking Carlos around in RCPD. I feel that if the devs had gone for broke with Nemesis, giving it more toys to shake up the combat as the game progressed, or if taking it down was harder than a single grenade, the game would've fared much better. As you perfectly said, it's better to look at a game for what it is, not what it could be. When all is said and done, RE3Make was a game with solid mechanics and definitely had its great moments, but just didn't seem interested in doing anything new and exciting after RE2Make. Dude no offence but have you played Inferno mode?, also yes I know you said you haven’t played this game but if you’ve played it as long as me it gets very easy

A few reasons to why i think Quick Step adds to the difficulty of the game , First , allows More and lengthier lunges as well as faster and more reactioned and adds to RNG effect and snowball effect ( You will have less time on invincible frames and would have to react faster ) , Example : Two zombies in room , You get a bite from one whch gonna put you on caution on inferno ( assuming that you didn´t failed skill check mashing or holding ) so the another zombie in same area will most likely kill you because you would need to react to another dodge quickly after failing which increases the odds of missing. Also quick step allows more enemies in areas which may become hard to not waste specific type of ammunition or time waste .

Re3 was such a head scratcher. It’s the “RE6” of the modern era of resident evil for me... just a mistake from top to bottom.

It’s not THAT bad lol. I’d much rather play through RE3make than RE6 any day.

Yeah. It's a fun game even if its not amazing. Very disappointing but it's much more enjoyable than RE6 and even RE5 in my opinion.

For all of this game's flaws, I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as RE6.

Nemesis will pull you out of safe rooms if you hang by the door/mess with him by entering and exiting. So that's a neat easter egg and something he has against Mr. X in the remake.

As a massive fan of the original RE3, I thought this was a good game, but a bad remake. It's definitely a lot of fun, but it is filled with so many missed opportunities that I sadly have to label it a disappointment.

Another annoying thing is that you HAVE to use the Mine Round against the Nemesis Clock Tower fight. Without it, you are locked out from finishing the fight (tried doing a knife only run)

I always thought it strange that there was no proof of the incident in RE1 due to the Spencer mansion blowing up. Didn't the player character literally gather a ton of journal entries and other documents from people clearly stating what was happening they as they progressed through the mansion? Did Chris and Jill just decide to throw them away or what? And that was me at 14 years old!

So to clarify the zombie bite thing for anyone interested. Viral bite transmission is not the most effective way of infecting a new host with a disease. Generally speaking, you have about a 30% chance of an infection spreading through saliva into the blood for a few reasons. This is before we arrive at natural immunities that the main characters of resident evil may or may not have. Just wanted to through that out there for you peeps.

The only redeeming factor is that jill for the first time in the serious actually has a personality.

What doesn't make sense is WHAT they removed. Gravedigger would have been an amazing action set piece, we could of had zombie animals of all kinds with the zoo, and the Clocktower segment would have been amazing in the remake.

"When Mr. X showed up in RE2, it was after you got to know the layout of the area, but then Mr. X shows up, you now have this constant, looming threat forever on your tail. I'm sure they wanted to capitalize on Mr. X for Nemesis." No, what happened is that they made Mr. X into Nemesis, but then completely got rid of what made Nemesis when designing...Nemesis.

The saddest part of this game is how much content was cut. There's barely enough left to make it its own standalone game. Probably could have been (maybe *should* have been) DLC for RE2Make.
