Resident Evil 4 Remake is NOT a Masterpiece, it's PEAK Remake Culture. It's one thing for Capcom to constantly churn out mediocre remakes, it's quiet another though for IGN, the Twitter-sphere, and most other gaming journalists to claim that Resident Evil 4 Remake is somehow a "Masterpiece" better than the original. In this video I do not focus on the story, or the voice acting, or politics, or Ashley's skirt, I discuss the actual elements of this game's composition like the combat changes, parry, movement inertia, gunsway, level design, camera system, stretched out pacing, lame stealth, and how by throwing together a bunch of trendy mechanics over the top of a shell of what was once an amazing combat system, the devs are not "remaking" anything and they certainly are not improving it.
In this video I also talk about what I call "Remake Culture," which is the attitude I see all over the place that games of the past were designed with certain restrictions or elements because they are "outdated," like Resident Evil 4's original camera system is Windows 98 and modern generic camera system is Windows 11. The effect of this Remake Culture is the full on acceptance of creating fan fiction versions of already existing games and believing them to be objective improvements because they now abide by generic current gaming design, even if the shift to generic design completely obliterates the core of the game play. The end result of this Remake Culture attitude is to remove any unique game play elements a game may have (like Resident Evil 4's camera and hitstun), and to hammer down all great games of the past into a generic sludge of the same game with a different coat of paint. Somehow Capcom have taken Godhand with guns and turned it into the the Last of Us Part 3, Knife Parry Edition. Visually they have taken art direction inspired by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut and replaced it with a lame Marvel Saturday Morning Cartoon aesthetic.
As of right now you can get the original Resident Evil 4 on Xbox, PS4/PS5, Steam (PC), and Nintendo Switch. If you want to play the Remake, it's on PS4/PS5, Steam, Xbox Series X, but NOT Xbox 1 X (which I own) because Microsoft could care less about the 1 X.

I agree with you so hard here. While RE4R is a pretty good game in a vacuum, the remake culture surrounding it and all these other recent remakes drives me up a wall. Peoples most hyped up games are remakes instead of new ideas, and they treat every deviation away from the original and towards this homogenous blob of modern design sensibilities as some "objective" improvement. They talk about original games as if they're "outdated" now. I thought for so long that video games were art, but if people are willing to toss out an original the second a slightly shinier and newer version of it comes out, then it ain't art: It's a disposable toy.

@Disco Inferno Yeah, most people are so quick to apply the "art" label to something, nowadays popularly video games, as if most games have something deep and interesting to say. They clearly don't. They are mostly designed to be diversions or challenges that generate money for their creators, publishers and investors. The original RE4 had absolutely zero depth to it from the perspective of art. Game design depth it had plenty of, but there was basically nothing important that it had to say, and that is ultimately what decides whether something is art or not. Maybe you could call it bad art, in the sense that a B movie is bad art (and RE4 is very B movie-esque). Sure, RE4 might have some good visual art direction, or good music composition, a bit of solid voice acting, and it might overall create a nice ambience in its world-building, but these things are all generally in service of creating a GAME, not ART with a substantial message to get across. But that's pop culture for you: typically shallow and ignorant. And I say this as a person who likes the original RE4 (the remake is the worst kind of blatant cash grab), but I can still recognize it for what it is and is not. There are some truly artistic games, but they are without a doubt the minority. Same goes for most music, tv shows, movies and even books. Games can be incredible as games without being the least bit artful (chess is fantastic, but it has nothing to do with art).

I replayed the original recently and never once I was bothered or felt like it was needed or that it was a problem that in the original you can't walk and shoot, because the overall gameplay in the original is faster, Leon moves, runs, aims and uses his melee attacks a lot faster than he does in the remake where he feels so realistic that often it's annoying to see him struggling to run away from enemies or move fast cause he is too tired or hurt, while in the original there wasn't this problem, Leon was always at the top of his form even on yellow/red health he barely became a little slower at walking and run, so the fact he couldn't walk and aim/shoot at the same time wasn't really a problem for me, the excessive realism of the remake it's what bugs me instead

I have noticed that compared to other mediums, gamers tend to disrespect their classics much more. They don’t accept concepts like authorial intent and act as if game designers back in the day were cavemen banging on rocks until someone invented the wheel. They talk about games like they're made of swappable car parts and view the entire medium as an endless chase for a new toy. If you prefer and old game over a new one (such as preferring the original over its remake) they will quickly dismiss your opinion and accuse you of being “blinded by nostalgia.” It's okay for our classics to be classics, to be examined with historical lenses instead of treated as machines in need of repair. Imagine movie buffs telling you not to bother with the iconic original Cape Fear and instead just watch the shiny remake. I honestly don’t believe that video games “age” as common as people think they do. I think what most people mean when they say that a game is “dated” is that it’s not homogenised. The original RE4 today is just as well designed as it was 18 years ago. Same thing with games like Super Metroid and Super Mario Bros. Good game design never dies.

This is one of the better analogies I've read on the subject of remakes and the way "gamers" treat their games. The nostalgia argument always bugs the hell out of me. I played many games that are considered old time classics when I was in my late 20s. There was no "nostalgia" present (whatever that feels like) when I played the first Quake or a Fire Emblem game on an emulator in 2020, lol. People often fail to understand that, or maybe that's just my fault for thinking that everyone on the internet is an adult, lol.

It's basically the attitude where it seems like we are almost ashamed of our classics instead of admiring them. I always get super triggered when people dismiss nes or snes classics as "archaic" or "just a remanant from the arcades" because it's so obvious they haven't played a single nes game in their life. I didn't play arcade games growing up. I played them a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised at how well designed and well paced they were. I actually became a huge megaman fan because of this. It's unfortunate that we are losing brilliant game design principles over movie games.

Gamers seem to have practically zero respect towards the classics of their medium, or they can only recognize such things as a "stepping stone" leading towards (current era). Authors don't do this, and nobody in cinema gets excited for remakes. But gamers? They eat this up, thinking "finally, now I can enjoy this thing I enjoyed 10yrs ago - but for REAL this time!" And then 10yrs later they'll buy the remake of this remake and call it a masterpiece too. Infinite tolerance for regurgitated franchise slop.

Personally, there are games that have actually done very well because the remake wasn't just one to one. Look at kirby super star ultra, super mario advance, pokemon heart gold/soul silver, and kirby's return to dreamland deluxe. Personally I would love it if kirby's nightmare in dreamland got another remake because the director of the kirby games at that time did it dirty. It was my very first kirby game and I liked it but as a remake, it was too faithful and even took away some parts like meta knight giving you the invincible lolipop. There's just so much they could do. Add a intro cutscene where king dedede gives the pieces of the star rod to his minions, include most of the mechanics from the other kirby games shinya developed. Add the lore, have the post game just be meta knightmare with some updated moves and harder mini bosses and bosses. The mode should also have dark metaknight as a boss instead of another meta knight, it should feature a true arena and bosses that you can fight any time on the world map if you know what I'm talking about and very importantly, you don't lose your power up at the first hit. I know I have more ideas but anyways they could really do something great instead of what it was on the gameboy advance.

@@MamoMark it's just because they're fanboys of the remake and trying to act like if you have a problem with it then surely you must have a problem with the original because they reall think it's just as good if not better. I feel bad for those idiots... after playing the opening village segment in the remake -- the part of the original that was unforgettably terrifying the first time I played -- I immediately thought it was trash. They achieved the impossible by making a boring, frustrating watered down version of RE4 that doesn't even look that good. The whole pacing of how the enemies chase and gradually overwhelm you is completely incorrect in the remake. In the original, it seemed like the devs had it down to a science. It was always tense but you never felt like there was no way out, and the villagers moved in on you *just* slow enough that you had a bit of time to react and move through the level. in the remake, they all just swarm you at one location immediately to the point where you can't even move, and their grapples are so f'ing annoying (like how they grab you or whatever). There's no incentive in the remake to actually move around, or it's not even possibe because in each area, I found that they would just all come to you right away. It's so stupid, and then after a while the game stopped giving me any ammo or health items. It's such a stupid terrible game, whether you compare it to the original or not. Many of the choices the devs made were just baffling, like buying a first aid spray and then you can't buy it again later, the almost slot machine type of randomness of what you find and how you lose everything you just expended after dying when you come back. I just broke the game disc because it was a stupid waste of time. Very poorly designed and awful overall. 1/10

@@j-555 Yeah it just doesn't evoke what I like about RE4 in really in way. It feels like RE2R was forced into an action game, with needless crafting systems too. The action never reaches the fun heights of OG RE4. The game has abundance of randomness in its combat, that I think is fine in a horror title, but in an action game it ends up feeling frustrating and not fun. You'll even see speedrunners get super pissed because some shots don't stun enemies consistently. Imo an action game should be more or less predictable, but horror should keep you guessing and on your toes. RE4 and even RE5 you get into this dance like state with the fighting and melee, but RE4R wants this annoying slow paced, overwhelming mobs of enemies that just combo and grab constantly. Add on Leon's delayed movement and delayed repeat aiming for whatever reason, to make it more "horror" I guess... ffs

@@MamoMark yeah i agree. The guns also just do not have stopping power. They feel weak like pea shooters, and for some reason there's an artifical delay whenever you attempt to draw a weapon. There were so many times I switched weapons and I PRESSED THE BUTTON but it would take a couple seconds for it to register. That got me killed so many times. It's RIDICULOUS. And the little run tied to the left analog/R3 is absolutely useless. It's like a brisk jog at best that NEVER gets you out of trouble. Most offensive of all was the removal of the laser in favor of the generic crosshair that just sucked. I know you can get a laser in the game eventually, but it's not the same. It's just a crappy dot and the game makes you work for it. What was so brilliant about the laser in the original was that it was actually on your character's weapon in the game, like a practical piece of equipment with full functionality, as opposed to a HUD element like in the remakes. I remember everyone complaining about RE5 that they still hadn't added walking while aiming yet, but I never cared about that. and when I played the RE2 and RE4 remake it occurred to me: you need to stop in order to make a good shot anyway. Unless you could actually run or strafe around the enemies while shooting like in Max Payne or something, there's really no reason to ever move while you're trying to aim. When you think about it that just ruins it. The original RE4 gave you complete control and it had you stop to enhance your focus and let you control. I just hated how the RE4 remake CONSTANTLY took control away from the player. And it never gave me enough of what I needed to survive -- ammo, health, etc. The art style is also so lackluster and uninspired. Honestly, if you play the HD version of the original on Xbox One X, PS4, etc you might be surprised. The original holds up and that HD version looks amazing, almost like it was updated because since I threw RE4R away, I started playing it and couldn't believe how good it looked.

Jed Pressgrove, in his "Game Bias" blog, recently made a series on remakes. He prefaced it with the talking point that "audiences of other media groan when a remake is announced but gamers are excited?" and then proceeded to review several historically disappointing remakes. Even if a remake's good, it has no reason to exist if it isn't as good as the original. And it should never outright replace the original.
@ImaTroper

There is an example of a remake that replaces the original in a good way: RE1 Remake. The difference there is that Capcom had been "remaking" RE1 for years so RE1make was not just a remake, but also something of a definitive edition. Granted, that IS a special case.

If he was truly flabbergasted by why gamers are more open to remakes than other media then he isn't aware enough of the medium's growth to warrant having a blog centered around video games. It's obvious why gamers are more receptive to remakes: The rate of technological progress in games is EXTREMELY fast compared to other media. The reason why audiences of, say, movies, groan at remakes is the same reason why readers would think that a "remake" of an already existing book would be fucking stupid. Those media have not felt the insane growth spurt that video games have had over the past few decades. You look at a movie that came out 10 years ago and compare to the ones today and the difference in visual and auditory fidelity is trivial. Iron Man 1 still has extremely good looking CGI that even looks better than some Marvel movies of recent. Davy Jones from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies still looks jaw-droppingly fantastic. But video games? The difference between video games 10 years ago and video games today is immense. That's it. That's your reason why gamers are open to remakes. They want to see what their beloved older games look like when they're no longer marred by the technical limitations of their time.

I'm glad that you highlighted the fact that one of the consistent problems with this 'remake culture' mindset is that devs are too afraid to remake a product that was bad or mediocre. There's something irritating about the arrogance that sometimes comes from people who make claims that a revolutionary game like RE4 is now outdated; blown out by a remake. The reality is that Capcom stood on the shoulders of giants and these games now feel like glossier replacements for the old RE system of "decent numbered game, worse spin-off title." The exception here is REmake, which did improve RE1 in ways it probably needed. The remake deserves praise and particular focus should be given to the areas where innovation and actual originality strike, but a real test of these devs would be to remake the troubled games; update them, make them proud additions to the franchise. Why not remake Code Veronica? Or maybe even RE0? Unlike RE4, there's a better argument to be made that these games _deserve_ remakes. Will they really do RE5 as some have postulated? Will we get an RE7 remake within 10 years? The rate that they've pumped out the last three is pretty crazy.

Yeah to me, a remake ought to be about accessibility. I LOVE Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. I actually probably would make it onto the list of 100% completion speed runs for Spyro. So I had many criticisms of those remakes/remasters. But all pretty minor: artistic changes, music, slight variations in game play. What I appreciated about them, is they totally made old games accessible to modern players. Especially Crash-I love the original, but even compared to Crash 2 it was frustrating to get through with the save system and lack of analog stick. The check points and modern save system were upgrades that made sense, even if I thought the hints were a bit unnecessary. With RE, the HD remake is an upgrade and an accessibility boost. I don’t understand the remakes for RE2 and 4. They feel like fan service generators to me. So many STORY and dialogue elements are altered, with no need and to the detriment of the gameplay. Silent Hill could use a faithful remake for accessibility. Silent Hill 2 also needs one for accessibility---but I’m deathly afraid of what they’re going to do to that.

Oh my god, the point about trendy mechanics and parrying specifically is so good that it hurts. I'm glad to find someone who actually agrees. I liked parrying in Devil May Cry 1 and 3, be it clashing weapons with enemies or using royal guard, but they were supplemental mechanics you could choose to use or not, that also made sense in context. They worked for those games. In a lot of modern games though, not only is parrying a predictable inclusion, but it almost feels like I'm making a mistake in some games, if I don't choose to parry, and yet the timing doesn't tend to be as tight as something like royal guard, but unlike royal guard, parrying often results in massive damage just for timing a single button press a lot of the time, which occasionally seems really overpowered and unearned. I think you're dead on about remakes in general btw. I think it's a sign that the artform of computer games isn't really taken seriously just yet - that remakes are propped up the way they are. Realism can work if the game's truly focused on it. Realism in RDR2 really works for me and it wouldn't be the same if they allowed rapid movement and looting the entire time. RDR2 is meant to be taken slow. Games like RE is different. RE doesn't really feel like a realism game. I want Leon to feel deadlier than he did in the OG. I still enjoy remake gameplay, but there were some serious missed opportunities to expand on combat, like wakeup gunshot or kick, roll, and all downsides to these choices. And I much prefer when Leon has tight movement, and would have liked to see that movement enhanced with better animation to make weaving through crowds feel more immersive as a deadly OP Leon. Overall, game's really great. Mechanics are my biggest gripe. Not the manchild s*** like guys wanting to see Ashley's panties or lame old one-liners that really weren't funny even back then. I also hate the complaints about Ada's voice acting, despite her sounding surprisingly comforting and like a real woman, not some caricature. Characters in RE should feel unrealistically physically OP, but they should still get realistic dialogue and acting like Ada's, Leon's, Ashley's, etc.

Exactly, something we discussed at the game studio I work recently. Animation driven character movement that aims to look realistic will always feel unresponsive and sluggish which I personally dislike as well. I assume that the same problem will be pretty apparent in the Unrecord game that is all the hype currently, people don't realize that the trade off for the camera to look like that is that you sacrifice a lot of precise control of the character movement and aiming, looks amazing in a video but could feel god awful to play.

That's a great point. Realism more often than not makes things worse. There's a reason I like anime more than live action. Exaturated personalities is just great fun. We spend our days in the real world. Why would we want to play games that imitate that? I want to double dump, run fast, dodge bullets and do cool energy blasts. Realism can go away. Funny Leon is better than realistically boring Leon.

I've never played RE4 but totally agree with the broader thesis of this video. This notion that contemporary games are somehow just inherently better-designed than older games is rampant through games journalism and interviews with developers, and is totally infuriating. You'd never see a film critic insinuate that the MCU has made the godfather obsolete, or a fine art critic claim that Banksy is inherently better than Dali, but it's just rife throughout video game culture.

Reasons on why Resident Evil 4 (Original) plays like a light gun shooter. 1- When you shoot you cannot move while the enemies aproaches to you, they run fast when they are at long range, they slow down when they get at least aproximately 2 meters to give the player a chance to shoot them, just like light gun games where the enemies slows down giving you time to react without moving. 2- Where you shoot the ganados and other types of enemies matters, you shoot their head, you make a kick, if you shoot their legs you perform a back kick (depending on what you call it) like most light gun shooters, is not about just shooting the enemy, it's about the location on where you shoot them. 3- The movement is smooth, like most light guin games, movement after clearing each gunfight it's smooth, can be fast or slow but smooth on the feel, Resident Evil 4 nailed the movement making it feel like a light gun shooter. Even better than dead aim IMHO. 4- The enemy attacks has a delay before hitting the player, giving Leon a chance to shoot them in order to hitstun them or move away. 5- Ladder climbing is very smooth and fast, like most light gun shooters, the pacing must have a flow where you get this almost uninterrupted movement before closing towards enemies, so even climbing ladders is very smooth and takes little time, dropping from one floor to a lower floor feels fluid making the game feel like a trancition even though is a drop animation the original developers really outdid themselves with the obstacle animations, making them smooth, not realistic, jumping from the window feels like a good transition from fixed cameras to third person perspective making it feel like a light gun shooter even though the camera while dropping from the window skips rather than move towards Leon in a transitional way to third person view. 6- You can deflect arrows by shooting at them, you can also deflect any throwable before reaching you, like most light gun games as a defensive mechanic, also some hitscan enemies takes a moment of delay before shooting at the player, again giving the player a chance to shoot them before they start shooting or hide. 7- While it plays like a light gun shooter, it also plays like a katana on rails slasher, since your knife can deflect arrows and can cancel the enemy attack by hitstunt. Like the arcade games tsurugi and Mazan, etc. 8- The barrels that has items on them and crates while not necessarily you have to shoot them, by shooting them it kinda gives you a light gun shooter feel to it even though you have to collect them. 9- The gameplay contains trigger discipline like most light gun shooters, your tmp for example, can be really accurate but shooting continously can affect your aim. 10- The boss fights, while they have QTEs, most of them have attacks that takes time to hit the player, giving the player a chance to cancel their attacks before it hits the player. Also, the bosses have weak points that requires mostly shooting precisely, some bosses like Sadler requires the player to shoot his weak points that moves constantly as well giving the player the tracking aspect of the game. 11- The laser aiming gives it more precisión, might look like a gimmick at first but the laser aiming actually serves its pursose rather than having a big crosshair ( like Dead Aim) the laser's dot only shows up when aiming at the enemies and destructable objects, it has a similarity of light gun games hit spark aspect where in most light gun shooters, you get a bigger hit spark when shooting at enemies and destructible objects. 12- Reloading mechanic is about timing the reload, like some light gun shooters where you reload by shooting or just aiming outside of the screen, the reloading is turn based aspect and the fact that you must aim in order to reload really enforces the idea of reload timing during combat. 13- The shooting gallery minigames from the trader, while being optional, it really nails the light gun shooter aspect since the shooting gallery works like a charm for this gameplay aspect, thanks to it's precision based shooting. 14- The level design is more linear than the previous games, making the flow of the game faster than it's predecessors (Not including spin offs even though Dead Aim does feel linear sometimes). 15- The cover mechanic makes you invulnerable to even grenades, like some an extremely popular light gun game series such as Time Crisis, but at the same time you can also reload while taking cover. Unlike most third person shooters that you tend to be vulnerable to grenades. 16- Shooting jewels to collect them and get rewards is similar to shooting high valued items in light gun shooters, in RE4 despite being a third person shooter, you mostly collect some jewels by shooting at them when they are at higher heights than the player, without collecting them by running at them. 17- Grenades can mow down most ganados and high damage other types of enemies, they do high damage like light gun shooters but nerfed in comparison since you get more grenades in the game than light gun shooters. 18- When Ashley gets caught, the player has to shoot the ganado before going to the door. The player cannot shoot Ashley, making it a gameplay aspect where the player has to shoot precisely in order to save her. Like a light gun shooter. Never played the remake but it looks like a typical third person shooter for what you described on the video, rather than a third person shooter with light gun shooter aspects.

Older games do often have weird controls from a modern perspective, but people don't seem to understand that your interface with the game is part of the game. Tank Controls have a specific job. They create tension and alter the player's strategy. If a shmup lets you shoot left and right, or aim with the mouse, then it is a different game. I am a huge fan of coupling movement and shooting. They are fine as separate actions when the situation calls for it, but when your movement affects shooting, and your shooting affects movement, your strategy will change. Think of run and guns where your shots go in the direction of movement, or are restricted to 4 or 8 directions. They force you to move and position in different ways. The inclusion of kiting or circle strafing should not be a given, they are tools that should be applied intentionally. Internet discourse has confused a decent generalized solution for a standard expectation. Thankfully there is still a lifetime worth of good stuff to try already. Heck, I bet RE4 Remake is a good time. But it is a little insulting when companies release something and market it as though to say "Hey, that thing you like? It actually sucks and you are a dumb boomer for liking it."

Tank controls were for more than just tension. The camera angles were locked and changed dynamically. Since UP was always "Forward" it didn't matter whether or not the camera changed on the fly. Up would always be forward, even if the camera changed three times down the same hallway you never have to alter your controls based on the camera position. Tank controls in that game, are superior to modern controls. On top of this, DOWN is always "Backpedal" so your character ALWAYS faces the enemy while moving back. Something that is impossible with modern controls without additional input.

Where in the marketing do they imply that you're dumb for liking the original? Genuinely curious, remakes indeed are an unfortunate result of companies finding new ways to make money off of nostalgia but from what I've played this seems genuine in its endeavor to just make a new version of the old game.. They reference old lines and use the og models for the case charms.. As long as they're not preventing you from buying the original game and are putting out a functional, passionately made product, I think it's mostly fine. I think there's space for both versions to exist and for us to say both of these games are great in their own ways. The og is indeed more arcadey and unique, and that's what makes it more special. I kinda look at it like the og evil dead vs the remake evil dead where the new one was more grim, dark and intense while but having elements of the original. As for the idea that remake culture is this industry stifling force, I can't really agree. We'll always be seeing new things crop up from smaller developers that are more keen to take risks, and those will eventually inform industry standards and "modern sensibilities". This is the pipeline for like every medium of art. Why would gigantic companies like Capcom want to make risky decisions when they could easily make the ones that sell? It's a dynamic that's really always existed and I don't really know why people see that as something that could change.
@guardianoftheledge4966
@guardianoftheledge4966 Жыл бұрын
@@mr.b89 That is well put. I did exaggerate, but I do think that remaking a game does imply negative things about the original. That could be a flaw or limitation. It could also imply that the developer found some alternative design worth exploring. These are good reasons to remake a game. We can't really know for sure what caused RE4R, but the coverage of the remake is where the issue lies. The game is altered primarily on an artistic level, and thus very subjective. But it has been sold by some as 'fixing' the clunky original control scheme. Or that it is better because the graphics are more modern. They are talking about these things like they are relics of a time when people didn't know any better. If you still like these old things today, then what they say kinda lumps you in with "people who don't know any better". It is a case of presenting a subjective opinion as an objective one. That isn't really an issue in itself, but I believe in a feedback loop of this perspective being good for business, so business tries to reinforce this perspective. I do not know if this many people actually think like this or not. It could be a case of "make up a group and get angry at said group" on my part. But we do know that, some journalists and companies are doing this, with or without the support of any gamers. Either way, it peeves me when we downplay the value of past work, especially to when it is to justify the homogenization of the medium. Though it is certainly okay not to enjoy tank controls, low resolutions, or text adventures on a personal level. Death Stranding is a relatively rare example of a bold and creative big budget game. Some ideas, like Death Stranding, can't be explored by small teams. Which I think does stifle the creativity in the medium. But I don't think anybody is at fault. It is a systemic issue and natural symptom of a society and economy that depends on infinite growth. A frustrating reality that is unlikely to change for a long long time. RE4R still looks fun.

The majority of people don't think of video games as art, they think of it of a disposable product that you get into the hype for to be part of the scene, then move on to the next big thing. This is of course, not a new thing, as the majority of people always treated motion pictures that way, too. Which is why remakes have been going on there since like the 30s and have been just as big a plague. As with film, only people with a deep interest in the medium are going to care about (or even be able to distinguish) actual quality, or even be able to appreciate something more than 10 years old, because they are actually interested in the fad, not the art. Now obviously motion pictures are nothing like video games, despite the best of efforts of decades of hack developers, but I think the comparison is apt. However, we aren't in the dark days of the 360 era anymore; one can completely ignore major publisher games. And one can certainly ignore IGN.

One thing that should be mentioned about remake are cheap spawns! Very apparent in first red zealot fight arena, and goat head bridge ambush I.e, when you drop the chandelier on the second floor, immediately run top left corner of the 2nd floor, there will always be 3 zealots spawn into existence right in front of you. That's how Remake keeps giving you cheap shots.. they'd spawn enemies on your blind spot even though you know you cleared that area.

Watched this after the comparison videos. Some downgrades are downright shocking. It's obvious a lot less love and effort was put into the remake. The character design, some enemy designs like the goofy zombie dogs, death animations, missing ambient sound... And that's just some of the audiovisual stuff. The list goes on and on. Your analysis makes perfect sense. All I want to do is play the original once again.

I can’t tell if you are being serious or not. The game vastly improves upon enemy design greatly the dogs look like actual threats it still resembles the original games model but the fur is black and has more modern game detail. There is no “less love and effort” if they add detail and change bits while still staying true to the original. The death animations in the remake are brutal enough to make me go “damn” or like give me a look of shock or disgust. I think you misunderstand the word “downgrade” for like “oh its not as appealing to me as it is in the original” which is very common and just makes the fans who like re4 remake go like “what the hell is this person on”. Please be more descriptive in what you make arguments about.

That said, I call bullshit that RE4R wasn"t made with love. Leon holding his pistol like John Wick, the visceral combat with limbs being blown off without vanishing, the tendrils that can be seen from blowing off limbs. A great example is Red Dead Redemption vs RDR2. Its rather obvious. In RE4R, the biggest problem is the combat RNG. In the OG RE4, shooting or knifing an enemy in the face would stun them 100% of the time. In RE4R enemies can tank half a magazine before they even flinch. RE4R is built around this combat and its very polished for what it is, but its not any where near as snappy and responsive as the original. In film, remakes can offer the opportunity for genre reset. Consider Werner Herzog's 1979 remake of FW Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu. By the time of Herzog's remake, the vampire genre was defined by hokey B-movie horror from Hammer Studios. Herzog repudiated what were then the dominant conventions of the vampire genre by going back to the original, effectively saying: we need to start over and do something completely different. Herzog then offers an alternative vision of the genre's evolution: instead of being about cheap thrills and jumpscares, vampire films could be about loneliness and seduction and the struggle (thematically and visually) between light and dark. And it worked: the big budget vampire films of the 90s (Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with the Vampire) took the themes and visual compositions of Herzog's Nosferatu as their starting place, completely ignoring the Hammer horror conventions. By contrast, video game remakes tend not be genre resets by genre surrenders. They look at how genre conventions have changed and then revise the original to comform to those changes. Xenoblade-style action role-playing has eclipsed the popularity of turn-based role-playing, so Square will "update" FF7 to play like Xenoblade, discarding the fundamental mechanics of the original. Video game critics also expect this, angrily criticizing remakes that don't conform to current trends (a good example is the various Dragon Quest remakes, which critics mark down for maintaining the fundamental mechanics of the originals instead of chasing action RPG trends). Imagine if film critics reviewed Herzog's Nosferatu the way video game critics review game remakes. Wait, why isn't Christopher Lee playing Dracula? Where are all the jumpscares? Where are all the shrieking damsels with their tops falling open? Why is this film asking me to think about longing and loneliness instead of how scary foreigners are? Herzog completely failed to update the 1922 original to meet modern sensibilities. 3/10

Very insightful stephen! I agree totally. Because in film remaking the story is literally the "art" or core of the art so there is a bit more of an apples to apples when it comes to "remaking" films since it's literally impossible to re-create a film with the same actors and stuff ha.. In video games though, the story is not core, it's added flavor and the entire medium is digital. There are no analog aspects that cannot be re-created (and voice acting is hardly that important), so if you "remake" a game and change all the design elements, you haven't remade it at all. You've made a new game and then plugged that new game into the original IP's branding. It's a fanfiction.

I’m glad I found this comment that eloquently conveys my frustrattion with the whole remake culture. While I understand video games translate a little different especially when older games have performance and accessibility issues that requires a solution, remakes are one of them. However, that doesn’t give the excuse to disrespect the original by changing a lot of it since it’s the artistic component. If they had just updated the graphics, go through the mile to put the effort into reanimated to the full scope of the original it’d be much more praiseworthy. Obviously, they took the easy route and just cash in by turning towards the lazy modern conformity like a pussy.

I completely agree with how painful it is that they ripped out the core gameplay mechanics. This may seem silly, but the simple fact that the red dot sight isn't standard on the pistol turned me off of ever playing remake. Stop and shoot along with the red dot sight were two of the most iconic things about OG in my opinion. I mean come on aiming with the red dot instead of a reticle added so much immersion. You are right there with Leon aiming and feeling his shaky grip on the pistol. Taking that away kind of removes the player from that close connection. Its just a generic 3rd person shooter now. The red dot aiming along with stop and shoot added so much tension along with a unique perspective.

i think the original still holds up fine. all this outdated talk is just something people are being brainwashed into believing, so these big developers won't need to come up with new ideas, they can just remake every game they've ever made. thank goodness for indie developers, they are very quickly surpassing these aaa developers, coming out with better games for a lower price. games like hollow knight and dead cells are literally better than the majority of modern aaa games and cost much less. i still can't believe hollow knight was only $15. it's such a huge, amazing game for a fraction of the price of any aaa game. and they claim silksong will be 5 times the size of hollow knight, which is unbelievably massive. hollow knight is already the biggest metroidvania game i've ever played, and now the sequel will be at least 5 times that size according to the devs. no aaa developer would ever do that, they would split that sequel up in 4 $60 games, but we'll probably get it all for $30. and indie devs just continue to improve, so it won't be long before aaa games will no longer be worth it.

A good comparison here is Metal Gear Solid 1 vs Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (TTS); TTS being a GameCube remake of the original, running in the MGS2 engine. Some fans will tell you TTS is just a graphical upgrade to the franchise and improves on the game. However, MGS1, having been built for the PS1 for a controller WITHOUT thumbsticks, had unique fixed camera angles with no first person shooting elements (not including fixed aimed weaponry). This meant the maps were designed with this in mind. Enemy patrol paths were placed with this in mind. Boss fights were built with this in mind. With the developers placing the game in the MGS2 engine - by adding first person shooting elements - COMPLETELY changes the pace & flow of the game, into something it shouldn't be.All the voice actors were asked to come back and re-record their lines for TTS. Sadly, the majority of their performances are sorely lacking compared to the original. With Story, the grounded, serious and thought provoking adventure of Solid Snake is sadly bastardized in TTS, because most cutscenes are remade with Matrix level absurdity. Snake is doing backflips, Neo levels of CQC, slow-mo diving on and around missles, bullet time etc. The Psycho Mantis boss fight is a laughing stock compared to the original jaw drop. Sadly, just like with the RE4vsREmake 4 debate, there is a bloc of people who don't really care about what's lost along the way.

I know this is likely because it uses the same movement as the RE2R and RE3R, and I suppose it works fine for those games due to how much tighter the spaces are. But in RE4R, there are much more wide open spaces, and I don't feel good moving around as Leon anymore. Sure, in the OG, I had some trouble getting used to the tank controls. And indeed I really liked that game, smooth controls, good visuals, nice plot and superb gameplay. So after that I decided to play RE4 after hearing so much about it. I got it on PC, without any mods. Surely, I should find that old game to be outdated and clunky, right? Nope, by the time I reached the first village I was already used to the "outdated" control scheme (on KBM even), and 2 hours after that I was already enjoying it a lot more than RE2 Remake. The "tanky" controls are completely and utterly irrelevant. You'd have to be incredibly dense to complain about RE4's controls. When I go through your videos, the detailed and philosophical artistic design beyond the shield of mainstream hype and bandwagon made me see why artistic integrity is important. The remake culture major problem is the idea of remodeling the old games into conforming to 'modernize standards'. As another comment pointed out in film critics on Werner Herzog's 1979 remake of FW Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu. There's no more risk or artistic passion. Congratulations, you "remastered" the IGN review😅 The lost design knowledge due to the disappearance of the arcades is an extremely interesting topic. However, this whole 'games are art' debate is tricky because obviously most AAA developers/publishers don't really see it this way. Sure, every design process has its artistic intention but to Capcom their games are more like cars than paintings or books. They reiterate a successful model every time they see a lucrative opportunity. It's a cash grab, like you said. Sales show that it's welcome.

The whole video games are art debate is long dead contrary to what impressions you might get. Video games are art, but the thing is, art doesn't imply some inherent merit. So something being art doesn't actually matter because anything can be art if you say it is. I agree with pretty much every sentiment in this video otherwise.

Ha thanks Andreas! Yes I have remade the ign review from shilling to parody. I'd love to do a vid on the subject of games being art because though publishers and journalists will say that they think games are art, they actually don't. To journalists and academics, it's not the game that's the art (mechanics, level design, so forth), it's the packaging that's the art. That's why publishers will "remake" a game by throwing away that pesky game part, keep the packaging, and then plug in some other trendy game in it's place and bam! Now you have a resident evil 4 skin slapped on top of some other "modernized" game.

The reason games and what makes a good game change over time is because gamers themselves change over time. As you said gamers nowadays care more about aesthetics, politics, and story. Gamers in the day of the original RE4 valued mechanics more. This is why you will always hear that "modernizing" a game is objectively good. Because it removes things the last generation enjoyed and adds things the current generation enjoys. Any complaints about how previous games were better gets looked at as "old man complains about kids these days". Trust me, as someone who loves classic JRPGs and constantly hears how all the core mechanics of those games are "old" and "outdated". You'll never reach the current generation with this message. Great take on the remake. Both the OG game and the remake are probably two of my favorite games. Though I have 6 chapters left in the remake, so will see if it continues to hold up. These videos are always entertaining since you really back up your views. Even when I disagree I can see your perspective. Its good to get different takes on shit. I did feel like there was alot of polish added to the remake but I dont feel that these remakes are ever a straight replacement for the original games. I see it as another take on the game, which is very cool to see. Though I think I may enjoy the gameplay in this one even more with the modern controls, better sound and visuals, etc. I do understand that the OG game was designed the way it was with a purpose in mind though too. So I can see where youre coming from. I do like the extra atmosphere added with dolby atmos, since I have a ceiling speaker set up for that and looks sharp on the OLED. I wouldve liked to see a true current gen remake of the game, but we are still getting that PS4 crossover effect, but with sharper visuals, not new textures, etc. Gameplay is king of course. RE4 already nailed gameplay for me , so for this I was more into seeing technical improvements and maybe some tightened up control. Which is pretty much what I got, plus some extra. Capcom is never at the top of the hill when it comes to visuals these days, even if they do stop supporting last gen games. I feel like the game is balanced well around the more nimble movement and ability to parry. As a result some areas felt harder than I remember them being in the original. Will definately be playing through Pro mode and mercenaries as I did back then. It doesnt feel like they slapped on the new control scheme and left the enemy AI and placement the same. It feels like its all balanced around that, and enemies do feel more aggressive and faster than I remember. Ill have to replay the game to see if the extra areas, like the boat, interrupt pacing. This was a huge issue for me in the new God Of War (walking sequence with the Yak, shitty story elements made me not want to revisit hardest mode). Theres not alot that I can see them really changing, except maybe not following some of the old layouts so closely. I would rather some areas like the castle be a little different. Even in the OG game, the village was my favorite part. RE6 is definately one that would need a remake. That game was super tedious. Bad games and older games will benefit the most from a modern remake. When you have a game that is already one of the best, theres not a hell of alot to add or change. Dino Crisis is another one that would benefit. Game design definately hasnt evolved in a perfect line upwards. If that was the case I wouldnt play games from all time periods. Theres alot of bullshit thats been added to modern games. Tons of filler and an overall lack of the challenge we once got. Now you need to play these games on the hardest modes to even have a chance of replicating that. I think the smaller hitboxes and some of the weapon sway and movement awkwardness will start to fuck with me on pro and merc modes. Normal has not been much of a challenge, but the harder modes are where flaws really stand out for me in games. I do notice the sway you mentioned, which fucks up my ability to pop off quick accurate shots. Also sometimes my head shots do not trigger a melee prompt, which is real fuckin weird. Im pretty sure they connected. Headshots also have to be more centered because that hitbox does feel smaller. I had to actually ditch the fuckin elite controller and use my brook adapter to use a Scuff Reflex PS5 controller. The deadzones were too much on the elite for this game, for me. Great points. We did lose that singleplayer quality after things peaked maybe between 2004-2005 with these 3D games. Games like God Hand ,NG and RE4 never really came out again after that. We had the rare Vanquish but it was very rare. There was that maybe 1 year window where some incredible games came out that were never really replicated again. Halo 2 was one of those gmaes for me too. Was hoping it was a new trend at the time. Keep KILLIN THAT SHIT !!

When talking about trends in gaming and how professional games criticism plays into them, it's important to remember that the gaming media has a vested financial interest in the continued health and success of the games industry, because obviously if people stop caring about games then the media that reports on them is collectively out of a job. So if the industry is focusing on remakes, you'd better believe that every media outlet is going to be cheerleading for how great those remakes are, because they want people staying hyped, spending money, and continuing to participate in what one might regrettably call "gaming culture".

@@conoraq Absolutely hilarious. You're claiming that the overwhelming majority of fans and independent critics who love the game are being insincere and have cynical motives. Your argument would make sense if there was a big gap in major game critics' scores and general fan sentiment and independent scores, which has happened several times in the past, but there isn't. People just love the game, and you apparently don't - which is fine but to claim that the genuine adoration the game is receiving from most people is just a symptom of the media propelling "gaming culture" or whatever term you want to use is genuinely delusional. The argument falls apart completely with any retrospection to the past decade or so of gaming. If the mass media had this much power over peoples opinions on games - to the point where theyre getting fans and independent reviewers to insincerely call what in your opinion may be a mediocre remake a masterpiece, and they had a vested interest in keeping profitable trends and hype going in gaming, there wouldn't have been nearly as many high profile videogame disasters as there has been in the last decade of gaming. from the top of my head, cyberpunk2077 was hyped to high heaven before it came out, and the mass media reviews generally loved it. It was completely torn apart by fans and independents when it came out and became one of the biggest disasters in all of gaming. Marvel's avengers was also extremely hyped before it came out and was part of the highly profitable (now slowly dying) trend of live service games offering microtransactions and constant updates - completely torn to shreds on release. I wont bog you down with more examples, im sure you can recall the many more examples yourself. Yes trends do exist in every form of media and there is currently a remake trend (which i see dying in a few years anyway); its obvious publishers have figured out that remaking already widely beloved games is an easy recipe to creating widely beloved games. That doesn't mean that games within those trends can't be genuinely great games, as re4 remake is, and that people can't have real love for them.

I'm so tired of remakes. it's all just indicative of how the industry is even more averse to risk. Just grab onto anything proven and remake it, it'll definitely work and be an easy cash grab. I just can't believe anybody can look at the shooting feedback (or lack of) of the remake and not see the problem. The game absolutely falls apart on higher difficulties because the feedback to shooting is so outrageous, you can shoot an enemy in the face 3 times in a row that's climbing a ladder, and they won't fall down. That encapsulates the problem with the remake. I'm like convinced people who think this game is a masterpiece must be playing it on the lower difficulties, or they just have some seriously low standards to the point where all they can think about is just being able to move and shoot is the most amazing thing in the world. Too many people think about the "I can't do this" of things like controls when it comes to older games like the original and not the "But I can"s. Like you've pointed out, even though there are restrictions, sometimes those restrictions are what allow things that can't be done with modernized controls or cameras, and it's recognizing those and adapting to them that is what makes older games still as fun as they were in the past fun today. But people today just don't want to tackle any learning curves or have any time learning something different, they just want it to play like everything else. All those idiot game journalists who think the original was clunky aren't bright enough to realize that enemies and combat encounters never make you feel like you need to be able to move and shoot to be able to succeed, they are always asking you to do something that is perfectly possible within those game limitations, but if you're some dumb blogger or game journalist, you're too dumb to realize those kind of nuances, and you just think new = better.

Excellent video. The two statements that most resonated with me are "most people don't care about game mechanics" and "throwing a bunch of trendy mechanics into a blender is not great design". It's so true and so sad. As long as the remake is wearing the original game's skin, it wouldn't matter to a lot of people if say, they re-remade RE1 into a roguelite twin-stick shooter or God Hand into a God of War-style game. People don't seem to get that restrictions themselves aren't necessarily outdated or inferior, it depends on what the game does with those restrictions. Hell, I still play Galaga and in that game you can only move left and right, there are no bombs, shot types, or any of the things added in shmups afterwards. And yet it's still fun because the designers knew what they were doing and made an experience that was engaging and rewarding. Also, your rant about parrying helped me articulate exactly why I hate that mechanic. It throws balance and design in the trash and turns the experience into a pseudo rhythm game.

Throwing in trends and bandwagon jumping is what AAA gaming has been about for the last five years at least if I'm being generous. More like the last ten. Developers have always followed trends to an extent (that's how genres exist), but since last gen it's been pretty blatant. Every game needs to have "RPG mechanics", every game needs to be "open-world" with a huge checklist of garbage tasks, every game must have an emotionally engaging and pace destroying story, every game must be at least 60 hours minimum etc.

I always hate it when modern remakes seem to have such a disdain for the games they are remaking. They think these classic games are an insult and need to be corrected. When I think of the best remakes (RE1, Pocky and Rocky Reshrined, Tales of Destiny DC, Firered, Ys Chronicles, etc) they are always games that not only love the original, but also understand it. They dont remove anything from the original or change the gameplay, they solely set out to improve what made the original game good. Modern remakes dont do that. Recent game devs not only dont like these older games but also dont understand why these classics are considered classics to begin with. These remakes are hateful products. I dont understand why book rewrites and movie remakes are universally considered bad but a game remake is so sought after. I feel like the people who like game remakes dont see video games as an art form. If they did see games as art, they wouldnt want to change them.

And I think one reason for this is that even though these directors may be visionaries, a lot of video game design is actually not created by the director, it is created by the programmers. So a lot of what determines gamefeel like the movement and hitstun is actually created by the programmer because a lot of that stuff does come down to the actual code and how the code is written. So if the new studios don't have solid programmers, the directors visions still will not come across like they did at the bigger studios.

@Holler Goblin Gaemz I actually found the evil within to be a janky, simply unfun to play game, the atmosphere was good, but the story was boring and the characters were 1d. I actually enjoyed 2 far more even though it was very easy.

@Holler Goblin Gaemz second game was rushed so yeah 1 more year could've done wonders but companies simply don't care anymore

Crouch to stealth in every modern 3rd person action game really annoys me as a bitch who loves the stealth genre. You can truly just run as fast as possible behind any enemy in this game and just get the stealth kill

35:19 its funny, because my favorite part of the remake castle is the second main hall that has the chimera statue (also the gallery room), and a big part of that is because of how more brightly lit and beautiful that part looks lol

Except the gallery room in the remake is dimly lit with red and orange mood lighting ha. The entire castle in the remake is lit like a soap opera

@@TheElectricUnderground fair lol, maybe the fact i played the game with bright setting turned almost to max which made me appreciate the room's design more, since i always thought theres no reason to make the locations in the game past the village so freaking dark considering how the fear factor more or less disappears at that point

Yeah I think the lighting in the remake is sort of all over the place it's like you are trying to do all this combat and yet you can't see very well, another reason why I think the camera angles of the og are so important, because that way they can make the lighting of the game consistent without sacrificing tension

I think a lot of the hype is from the popularity many of the RE speedrunners have and the pull they have with so many people, and capcom for sure has realized this. Which is funny bc one popular RE player talks about how "dogs***" new mechanics are (walk, parry, gunplay, evasion, hit boxes, etc.) But also says "he doesn't know how anyone could think the original is better than the remake." Pretty much everyone who falls in line with the safe current opinion of "re 4 remake > re 4 original" go on to complain about these same issues that the original didn't have. But somehow it's better and it's "nostalgia goggles" to think otherwise ? Unfortunately this isn't limited to RE or just remakes. Another bad trend is making 5th, 6th, or even 7th games in franchises, that quite frankly, need to be put to rest.

Speedrunners are braindead morons who will endlessly play the same game just for five minutes of fame attaining some 'world record' nobody cares about. And they're still prone to jumping to whatever is popular given the chance. My favorite speedrunner trend is when they jump on games nobody cares about that have no competition just so they can get their records easier playing a game basically nobody else plays. Their opinions aren't worth anything, so anytime somebody mentions 'hardcore' players and mentions speedrunners, I know they're absolute retards when they're trying to say "They think it's good so you should too".

Speedrunning ruined the replay value of the remake. All the special unlocks are tied to speedrunning, which is horrible. It's a long action game this isn't the type of game that I'd want to Speedrun. I want to have FUN fighting enemies, not bypassing them and playing the same exact way or fail. I fucking hate that garbage.

Carcinogen "RE4 Remake is a step back for Resident Evil but it's still better than the original." Sorry, but I can never be a fan of him after he said this garbage. His view of video games is completely warped, same as all classic RE fanboys.

@@whambulance8607 I agree, I don't care much for speedrunning myself. Mostly because there's nothing speedy about them. The finished product may be a few minutes or less than an hour, but it involves hours or sometimes days of practice/planning get a run 100% down. Then there's luck too, and in some games it's too much of a deciding factor. Hiding unlockables behind speedruns suck, because of all that. Unlockables should be tied to mini game challenges or purchasing upgrades after many playthroughs, but not speedruns on unrealistic difficulties. I know of Carcinogen, then there's also Bawkbsoup who is another influential speedrunner. Both have influence I think on how people see re 4 remake compared to the original game. It's sad that the same people who liked the original game now pretend like it wasn't even a thing because it's not the new game with UHD 8k resolution etc etc.
