Episode Notes:
1. Games captured on real hardware.
2. The Dreamcast did have other games in the genre. Blue Stinger, Carrier, and Illbleed to name a few.
3. I tested Dino Crisis with the VGA patch and the FMV scenes DO NOT play. Something to consider if its your first time playing it.
4. In some ways, Code Veronica wasn't quite as advanced as the other Survival Horror games Capcom released at the time. RE3 has multiple paths and a dodge mechanic. Dino Crisis has walk and aim gameplay.
5. Code Veronica is said to have been born from the failed RE2 port for the Saturn. With technical difficulties and a declining Saturn market, Capcom instead switched gears to a new adventure for Sega fans.
6. While Nextech did much of the grunt work developing Code Veronica, Capcom was still in charge of the story, art direction, and enemy designs.
7. Code Veronica released over a year late. It was supposed to land in early 1999 but instead came out in early 2000, right on top of the Playstation 2.

I remember being hyped AF looking at the Code Veronica screens in magazines when I was a kid. My mind was blown at how much darker, grittier and realistic everything looked compared to the original trilogy, it really felt like a true next gen RE game. It was the first game that made me realize that I HAD to own a Dreamcast, and when I finally got one for Christmas that was the first game I got.

Straight up facts. The golden age of gaming was 1985-2005, back then each new console generation was always a huge jump forward in technology and gaming kept getting better and better. Truth is, no game was ever going to be a huge system seller for the Dreamcast. Sega had too much negative momentum going into it and it released too close to the PS2, a more powerful console from a more popular brand with way more Third-Party support, a better controller (Dual Analog), and DVD player capability. Also, I think the All-3D graphics of CV just didn't look as impressive as the pre-rendered backgrounds of the previous games to the average consumer.

Except that there was no way you got the game a year early, as it didn't come out in Japan until February 2000, and then it came out in the US only a few weeks later so there is no way in hell the game was already being sold by import shops "a year early" as the JP and US versions came out very close to each other.

I remember importing RE2 for the Dreamcast so I can play the Code Veronica demo. I remember playing the demo on Christmas Eve until I had to go to midnight mass. Good times.

The original Resident Evil cameras added so much to the horror element. Like when you enter a room and you hear things, but can't see them yet.

I was absolutely gutted they pulled the plug on RE2 for the Saturn. I'd been following it forever in magazines. Have to say though that Code Veronica was fantastic on the Dreamcast, I remember being blown away with the way the camera tracked you 👏👍

I had all three RE games on the DC, along with that wonderful VGA adaptor. Code Veronica was actually my first RE (wasn't into horror back then), and it blew my mind. I used to show that opening cinematic to everyone. 2 & 3 are really starting to get up there in price, yet another couple of games I wish I'd held onto.

Recently played RE2 Dual Shock edition on PS3 PSN version. Re2 is my favorite game in the RE series. I have the PS4 remake and Capcom hit it out of the park with it. The other day i played RE3 on Rasberry Pi3 b and had so much fun replaying on the system even though i own the PS original. Years ago i considered buying RE2 and RE3 for Game Cube but even 10 years ago prices for those ports were high. Great video!

I remember getting a Sega Dreamcast back in the day and not being that excited.. but suprisingly enjoyed it and played every single day after school. RE Code veronica, Nemesis, Crazy Taxi. Etc. 😊 wish I went back in time and was more appreciative of this console

Random reason to love classic RE2 : the pistol that Kennedy carries, the H&K VP70. This is where I first caught sight of this utterly sexy work of gunsmithery 😌 and both it and the original RE2 are forever linked, in one of those small but personal nuances found in video games. It also leant the game a bit of authenticity.

That's awesome to hear, from what I been seeing most DC games just have a little splash art and not much else, shame more didn't do something creative with the real estate but I suppose it was an afterthought to the main game. Thanks for sharing that info!

As a Big Sega and Resident Evil fan, the first time I saw those swooping camera angles in Code Veronica my mind was blown, never had seen such elegant transitions in a video game up until that point, and a remake as a TPS just wouldn’t do it any justice..
