In 1996 Capcom released one of my all time favorites, Resident Evil. Here is a bit about its roots, its legacy, and why I enjoyed it so much. I even talk a bit about the Saturn version.

Episode Notes:
1. Saturn and PS1 version of Resident Evil caught on real hardware via Framemeister.
2. 3DO games on real hardware via s-video.
3. I used Clock Tower as an example here because I had heard so much about it from the import shops at the time. I didn't understand Japanese, so I actually didn't get to play it until the English translation years later. Aside from Sweet Home, it's the closest 2D game to Resident Evil.
4. Though a fan of the series in general, I have no always enjoyed every single one. I thought 5 was ok, but 6 was just outright not a great game. I loved the remake of part 1 on the GC, but did not care for RE Zero. It was ok, but forgettable as far the better games in the series. I highly enjoyed the remake of RE2.
5. I really hope Capcom remakes Code Veronica next. That game was always fun, and a new viewpoint and design will only take it to the next level.
6. Though I think the Saturn version is quite serviceable, I prefer playing the PS original. I own them both, including the Director's Cut and Japanese versions for both systems.
7. I forgot to mention that the Japanese Saturn edition of Bio Hazard has auto aiming on by default, a great help to newcomers.
8. The GC remake of this is better in just about every conceivable way. The visuals and expanded story are of particularly high quality.
9. Resident Evil ruined Alone in the Dark for me. To this day I still can't go back and play the first 2 games.
10. The multiplayer idea was cut from Resident Evil because Shinji Mikami said it was outright terrible.

This was the game that sold me on the PlayStation and it's successor is one of my favourite games of all time and one that made me jump time and time again. Funny to think that these 2 games not only set the benchmark for survival horror but also the standard by which remakes should be judged. I seem to be in the minority here but I never understood the complaints over the controls and they worked perfectly for the fixed camera

To be fair I feel like you are underselling Clock Tower. I feel like that was the first truly scary horror game and in many ways surpasses the far more technically advanced Resident Evil. Resident Evil, although great was filled with a lot of jack from the voice acting to the now in 2020 dated visuals. When it came to Clock Tower I feel like more was less with the better aged pixel art and the lack of bad voice acting due to the inability of the hardware being able to process it.

Fun fact: the uncensored intro, severed head fmv, etc did make their way to the US in the PC release. It only ran on systems equipped with a 3D accelerator from a very small and very specific list. I remember vividly saving up to buy a copy then the disappointment of not being able to play it and having to convince my parents to let me drop like $150 on a cheap Matrox 3D card. Life was good after that, dithered transparencies and all! I would say the PC release it probably the definitive version in the US, but good luck getting it to run on a modern system!

Random trivia: Scott McCulloch who voiced Chris Redfield also played Wild Dog in Time Crisis 1. The tank controls never really bothered me, but disabling the auto-aim was definitely a bad decision I think. The Saturn version of RE1 does have less attractive 3D but years ago someone told me the backgrounds were a higher resolution than in the PS1 version (although I’m not sure if they meant they were actually re-rendered at a higher resolution or if the game was just running at a higher resolution but using the same PS1 assets).

The game that really kicked off survival horror games and the popularity in horror games in general. It's a shame most big publishers these days all but ignore them and it is left to mainly indie developers to make them. Always wanted the first one to appear on the N64 as well as the second after hearing they were porting the sequel. Capcoms publishing on platform other than Playstation was frustrating at that time but then the same could have been said for the previous two generations favouring just Nintendo systems like most Japanese publishers.

PS2/Xbox/GC had some great RE style horror games: The Thing, The Suffering 1/2, Cold Fear, etc.

Everyone always complains about the tank controls in RE, I have to say I’ve never had a problem then or now, they always felt quite natural to me. The controls in RE 2 Remake took some getting used to!

I don't have that much a problem with the tank controls though the fixed camera angles can be a real bitch sometimes. Specially when you get back to the mansion and have to face 2-3 Hunters on a narrow corridor and the camera doesn't even let you see them coming!

Lord X, the 3DO Alone in the Dark was scary, but nothing like the Gene Stealers in Space Hulk...that game was truly jaw dropping and scary as the claw smashes the front of your helmet.

What a classic. I actually played RE2 first but ended up liking RE1 much more when I played it later. There's so much to love about it, even the story, which is damn interesting if you can ignore the crappy voices. RE is one of my favorite gaming series ever. It's too bad it's been focusing on First Person for the newer entries, that makes me have no interest in those.

The Saturn port still is my favorite one. Must be because of Zombie Wesker and the fantastic Battle Mode... XD

I'm familiar with the Resident Evil Franchise. My first time was from a Game Fan Magazine, but my introduction was with the original Resident Evil 2. I like story events were set up, controlling one Character at a time while both Characters' stories are happening at the same time. And I'm familiar that it's called "Biohazard" in Japan. 8:45- You get used to it.

Me and my brother would play this late night and take turns, same with part 2. It was the scariest thing ever back then. We played Clock Tower on the ps1 too.

I find it kind of amazing, but the first version of Resident Evil I saw for the first time when I was really young was the Saturn version, some guy was testing it after buying it for the first time at the video game store. I was a kid watching this shit like OMG is this a movie or a game!? I immediately fell in love.

Someone recently made a hack of RE PS1 that splices the gamecube cutscenes into the Playstation version, I’ll check it out one day when I find the time.

Note that the originally game had lock-on that they took out the American version to sell more rentals. Apparently the DS version is one of the best versions due to it having most of the features of the other games.

I remember the first time I played this. Coming from 16 bit and arcade games RE was a game changer. I never played anything so moody and creepy. I still play the RE remake once a year.

I can't actually remember if I first played this on Saturn or PS1 - but I definitely owned the Saturn version at some point. I never noticed much difference between the two honestly, and definitely agree the game wasn't hard - but I was scared to die. Certainly, I gave away my original Saturn game for a song (and likely PS1) as well. A few years ago, a buddy gave me a bunch of his old Saturn stuff, including a copy of RE - which until this video, I figured was a common game worth maybe $5. I'll have to break it out with the kids on Halloween, as even with the primative graphics, it proved less is often more.

There's an hacked version of Resident Evil called Ultimate Uncut (Or a similar name). It contains the original colored, un-cut intro, the original soundtrack (So you can use the dualshock controls), and the gameplay is balanced. You can find it on CDRomance, if I remember well
