Chicago’s Department of Transportation is expanding its network of protected bike lanes with the goal of making travel safer for not just bicyclists but also pedestrians and drivers. But a WGN News analysis of early data from one project in West Town shows there is no shortage of growing pains as neighbors navigate the changes.

Why would you even cross a road like that, especially with a child? If you're getting out of the car, do it on the bike lane side. If you're crossing, take the 2 minutes to get to the next crosswalk. There are plenty of those on Augusta and much safer now with the shorter distance to cross.

I think these are a great improvement. Driver's always had to open their doors into a cycling and driving lane. This really isn't any different. When a group like drivers are favored by the system for so long, new found fairness for other groups like pedestrians and cyclists can feel like a loss for the initially favored group. I'm confident like CDOT that these changes will bear out and make the street far more safe for everyone.

@@LL-bl8hd If you actually watch the video, she still doesn't have to open the passenger door into traffic. The passenger door is outside of the protected bike lane when opened. So she could just use that door, and lean over to get both children out - that's what I did when my kids were young if I couldn't avoid street parking (and I have more kids than she does). Or have the older kid unbuckle herself, and move over to the passenger door (which I started doing when my kids were her size). Or... she could just park in the parking space at the back (that all the homes on this street have), and not worry about traffic at all.

An important factor to control for in the crash data: bicyclist use might have gone up *exponentially* as this infrastructure makes it much safer for cyclists of all ages and ability levels to do so. @@erp2000- streets like this are typically paid for by property taxes, not gas taxes. Everyone pays for these, whether indirectly as renters or as property owners. Gas taxes are for highways. Rarely used by cyclists. Gas taxes still are "too low" to capture the wear and tear from vehicles, so subsidies to drivers on state highways and federal interstates remains an ongoing issue. But if you do see a cyclist on a highway, rest assured, they aren't causing any wear and tear, and if they don't use the highway as a driver, they are still paying for it indirectly through state expenditures on highway infrastructure.

I have a solution to a few problems: Make the bike lane wider with additional clearance space for passenger side doors. People can safely exit their vehicle without worrying about bikes until they need to cross the lane, cyclists are even less worried about getting doored and are able to give people accessing their vehicles plenty of space, and emergency vehicles will have a wide enough lane that can readily be cleared for them to access a location or bypass vehicle traffic (cyclists can easily stop and move over to the sidewalk if needed - cars are more difficult to move out of the way on any moderately busy street)

Because cars are parked far away from the curb, it's difficult for drivers who are pulling onto Augusta from side streets to see cross traffic so they inch out far and block the bike lane and part of the driving lanes. Amazon trucks, Ubers, Fed-Ex and Grubhub drivers now simply stop in the middle of the streets and double park. I've seen that lead to multiple near head on collisions when cars pull into oncoming traffic to get around them. The street is much more congested and drivers also drive around more looking for spots since so many were removed. More pollution. I've also seen emergency vehicles get delayed. Let's see how this plays out when snow comes. Don't know yet.
