After not wanting a resin 3D printer (and making a video about it years ago) I'm going to start 3D printing in resin. What changed?

I was on the fence about 3D printing for a while myself. When my 30th birthday came up, a sale dropped on the photon mono 4k, so I decided to take the leap. Within the first few prints, I realized I had gotten into something sort of incredible. I get that it's not for everyone, but if you've got the space, and you're disgruntled enough by GW's prices, then I honestly can't recommend 3D printing enough. KZfaq is the only resource you need to get that machine up and running, and the different patreon subscriptions have communities that will jump at the opportunity to help novice printers with any problems that come up. Good luck getting your printer set up! I'd love to see the progress here on KZfaq!

@@rostigerrolf4490 Ignoring the price of the printer, the consumables and files are pennies on the dollar compared to GW boxes. Gamza has a load of videos of price comparisons if you're interested. As far as terrain, printing is cheaper than buying, but crafting is cheaper still (and often free).

Welcome aboard :) Temperature is super important. I have a space heater below my printers in the room that they're set up in. You want to keep the temperature around 70 to 74゚. Make sure you have a really good drill for drilling a hole through your house. My Milwaukee drill broke as I was going through. Pay the extra money to get a good quality Panasonic vent. The one that I installed runs at a 180 CFM and is very quiet. I think you're going to be really happy with your set up. I feel that the growbox solution might be a little overkill, but if you are serious about no fumes, give it a try. I have a winx air purifier in my print room and it does a pretty good job of dealing with the odors if not the fumes. By the way, nice to hear somebody understands the difference between fumes and odors. I wish more people did. Good luck - can't wait to see what you print!

It’s a good thing I enjoy that because my hobby painting and playing dropped off considerably. Love to see people changing opinions and the growth of the community. I most recently printed a Cabal of demons for Reign in Hell for my nephew, a collection of adventurers for D&D, and I have models lined up for Five Parsecs from Home to print. The resin printer really kicked my miniature production into high gear, and I don't see that stopping any time soon. I e printed and painted nearly 100 miniatures, and even more terrain and other stuff so far this year. It's kind of crazy considering how little I was modeling and painting before I got into resin printing. I was pretty close to just giving up. Now I'm having a blast again

Having the ability to use a weapon like a inferno pistol on every Primaris death company elite suit is so fun to play with and sure it is not the best but it’s so fun charging and shooting with an insane amount of like strength 8 weapons with high damage.

If you do not want to drill into the house there are alternatives. If you use that grow house with hose attachments you can attach an inline vent fan and have the exit hose connected to a filter box. Either professionally made with a 3 or 4in connector where you slide in replacement cartridges or you can make your own with activated carbon. Or connect a vent covering with an acrylic sheet to place in a window, that way it goes outside without permanent changes and you can remove it from the window when done without bugs getting in. Just an alternative if you don't want to install a vent through a wall.

i'm sorry people called you names and said stupid things, it's annoying and also sad when people acoust others for thinking differently, everyone is allowed to not want to 3d print, it shouldnt be a problem, those type of people get me upset, i love 3d printing, but even if you didnt like it, it doesnt bother me because ...why would it? you liking or dislike anything has zero effect on me, if you like the same things as me though it's a cool bonus and gives us something to talk about, thats how i see things, or try to anyways. what i love about 3d printing is this, you can hire someone or find someone who is an artist, and they can make you a super personalized mini, toy, picture frame, anything you want, and exactly how you want it, you give them a little bit of cash, they send you a file and it's YOURS, thats so amazing to me. and thats just the beginning really, you can find so many amazingly talented peoples out there floating around on the web, and they are so excited to show us what they can do, i just love it, i hate painting, i hate gluing and i have no space to store stuff , i give them away to my friends lol, i often print stuff for my friends (obviously i trust these people and i know they are not like reselling them online or anything like that) sometimes my friends even buy files online and then i print it for them cuz they cant afford a printer and i already have one. i love the community, when i first got a FDM printer i had such a hard time with it, i was in a little face book group, a guy literally drove to my place to help me get the thing working and set up , who does that? sorry i talk a lot, been awhile since i messaged on your channel. but yeah, i'm glad you like 3d printing and i'm sorry people were rude about it, that always sucks

This is ridiculously coincidental, three(!) years ago I remember (among others) watching your video about 3D printing and, partly because of it, I decided to wait too. But now, I too bought the same Elegoo Saturn last year, also haven't set it up yet, because I'm building a heated, and mechanically ventilated enclosure for it. Not a grow tent though, because I wanted it enclosed, insulated and fully platemetal on the inside because I'm being overly cautious about fires. (Heating pad has a fuse, overheating protection, and the socket for it is powered through a thermostat. But I'm paranoid like that.) I'll be watching your next videos with much interest!

theres 2 main reasons im not getting into printing 1: even though its much cheaper now, its stilla single large lump sum to get into, the printer the resin, ventilation etc etc etc, its a fair amount you need to pay just to set up, and yes long term its probably cheaper, but the heavy entrance cost still puts me off quite badly 2: the faff, buying kits its just a matter of cut the sprue off, glue them together, 3d printing you have to go through a whole lot of faff setting up the print, the resolution, the supports, the resin, cleanup and ventilation, potential redos if things go wrong or dont print correctly, etc etc etc, its SO much more effort then just bying a kit and glueing it together (never mind that plastic is nicer to work with then resin anyway) i can still see myself getting into printing down the line, but as of right now, nah im gonna stick with kits

I'm about 3 months into printing myself. Fumes were also a big concern. I built essentially a fume hood to contain the printer, wash / cure station, and space for trays to tackle the messy work. I sized up the fan so I could also vent my airbrush spray booth. Space is a premium in my basement, but going larger has definitely made the process more enjoyable, easier to keep clean and safer. You may want another tent to do the cleaning work and still be using the ventilation. I find this to be the source of more fumes than the actual printing. Happy to share my design if you're interested.

I guess we put out a product that might make you ill but, not to worry, we don’t take any responsibility for that.” Not saying that’s what resin printer manufacturers are exactly doing. Just the general market. If you don’t feel safe doing something, in your home, with your health and your family’s health at issue, no one else’s opinion much matters, as the consequences would be your own.

Uncle Atom, I’m really looking forward to this journey your commencing. I’ve been on the fence about buying a 3D printer for many of the reasons you mentioned now and 3 years ago. The key things for me will be: 1. Can I buy/obtain STLs from any supplier and print them or do these machines have restricted ecosystems? 2. Can I make savings on printing overtime or is it at least as expensive as buying manufactured minis it’s just that the choice is greater? 3. Do I need to create a dedicated space because of set up times or can put it on a workbench in the garden for an afternoon and print a skirmish force? 4. Is it actually better to find the STLs I want and get someone else to print them. 5. What’s the quality really like? Am I exchanging mold-lines for strata-lines or a rough surface. Well those are some of the things on my mind re taking the plunge.

Disclaimer , I have only ordered elegoos saturn 2 , however ive been joining about 6 different discord servers and read about a dozen forums and then looked on youtube starting 2 years before Atom did his "5" years video on it , so this is my understanding so far : 1. Yes , however some machines have restricted "build" programs (those that you put your actuall STL file into called Slicers , so the printer knows what to print & where you add support if there is none). 2. Yes , comparing to the most expensive companies you can make it far less expensive , the cheaper ones you still make some savings , so its up to you how much that will be. 3. Best would be dedicated space , temperature does affect the build and might cause a failure depending on your settings , that said. You could find out what settings would be needed to setup in the garden and make it work , but that would require some work and not plug and play out of the box. Different places need different settings which all can be fine tuned. (setup time is not an issue if you count settings as a different issue). 4. Depends , free STLs no problem throwing them around , if you buy for personal use only(cheapest) - its no longer legal to even give the STLs to someone to print it for you , I recently found out , so thats why I need to buy me a printer (jumped on about 12 different kickstarters and went with the dirt cheap option not reading the details first). Buying stuff from 3Dprinter websites they usually allow it , again this depends on the maker of the model majority allow you to do it. 5. At 4k its good , at 6k almost top quality and at 8k you need a camera to see them (roughly & with right settings) However , this if for LCD printers , so if your not in a hurry DLP printers are coming down in price I recomend waiting a few more years to see who comes out on top. Hope my findings was of some use , greetings from Sweden

Proper ventilation is a great idea. My printer has a built-in filter AND fan, so I have a custom 3D printed attachment that I've added to the back where it vents, that allows me to attach a dryer hose. I then have a stronger in-line ventilation fan that sucks the air out and finally have it routed out my laundry room's dryer vent. Also, I use water-washable resin exclusively so far. Clean-up is definitely the most annoying part, but a good wash & cure station also cuts down on that. Good luck and hope you enjoy the hobby!

I haven't watched the whole video yet, but there is definitely a large group of people that equate "I am not aware that these fumes are making me sick" with "these fumes are safe to breath" A lot of safety issues are not common sense and it's really easy to unknowingly cause yourself damage. Low odor also does not mean low fumes. "Odorless" white spirits still require proper ventilation. Being safe and realistic about whether you can properly ventilate is the right way to approach things.

I bought my printer in November last year and honestly, I think that the communities for different patreons related with stls are the most helpful hobby groups that I've seen on the Internet. The sheer amout of high quality sculpts that print out well even if you're inexperienced (like me) is astounding! As for the fumes, in theory my printer has an inbuilt carbon filter, but recently I stopped believing in its quality. I plan on making a small enclosure connected to an actual carbon filter (I've seen some photos of such construction). And yeah, I'm curious what'll be your first pick to print on your own printer :)!

I got an FDM printer gifted to me,.I loved making terrain with it with no intentions of getting a resin printer. But I ended up winning two resin printers from design competitions. In less than a year printing has become a big part of my life & a small business venture. I love being able to print whatever I want on either type of machine now. If I need a bust printing to do techincal work on I can print it. I want to print a board of terrain I can :)

Speaking of "grow tents", I had a big aquarium set up with reptiles and amphibians, which of course required headlamps. This was over 20 years ago in Virginia, and the cops were flying over rural homes in helicopters with heat vision cameras to find people growing "orchids" in their home. They would fly so low that it would shake the walls and knock pictures off the wall and objects off shelves. They must have picked up my heat lamps, because they started just hovering over the house. I went outside and flipped them off while they just hung out for a couple minutes until they flew off. They got a lot of complaints from many people, and ended up getting sued in court over it. The court ruled it as a warrantless search and they were no longer allowed to do it.

For years people have put their PLA printers like the Crealities in iKea enclosures to vent ABS fumes. I have an Elegoo Saturn as well in my garage and I don't smell any fumes at all. I've resin printed for 4 years on a Longer Orange 10 and now the Saturn. Just note, for larger prints you'll want to hollow models out and dig a vent hole and a drain hole in the model in Chitubox before you slice, as large prints could fall off the bud plate and waste resin. Get a screen protector for the 4k screen and also a magnectic flexable build plate is a game changer. Minis are fine, though will use up more resin. I don't use water washable resin so I don't know anything about that but Elegoo recently changed their formula and many have reported issues with it so I use Siraya Tech resin now.

Good timing. I went through a lot of the same adjustments to my thoughts on 3D printing over the past year. I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Elegoo Saturn S and a wash/cure station. Water washable resin was the tipping point for me, as it becomes less cost effective if you have to buy IPA on top of resin. The support by veteran 3D printer enthusiasts also means you can avoid making the same mistakes. Having access to millions of STL files means you will never run out of things to print. While I do not think the rise of 3D printing will damage the current model manufacturers, it will encourage them to get more generous in their value offering.

I’ve been coming around to 3d printing myself just lately. I’d been aware of it for years but it always seemed like far more hassle than it was worth, plus I didn’t see the need to rush in before the tech was at a point that seemed worth it to me personally. With the leap to 4K resin printing it seems like it’s at a stage where I’m willing to jump in, but the stumbling block for me is just not having a suitable space for it. I don’t have a basement and don’t own a house of my own, so short of setting it up in my bedroom (which is already too full to fit a 3d printer and all the gubbins that goes along with it) I still can’t really jump in sadly. But totally agree with you that all the leaps in technology over the last few years have got it to a point where it’s now an accessible and really great option for miniatures! What I would say is that there’s this really weird evangelising by a small subset of people with 3d printers that I just find tiresome and irritating. I’ve joined several 3d printing groups to get a better look at what people are doing with them in the hobby and the results are impressive, but for some reason half of the posts are this pathetic echo chamber of people having a circle jerk about how great 3d printers are and how edgy they are that they can print minis instead of paying GW’s extortionate prices. I know it’s only a small subset of the hobbyists but it has a real Crypto-bro vibe that just puts me off from engaging with the community, which sucks because I know most folks are really keen to help people out and teach them the ropes.

The only way I've found too deal with the fumes was an industrial Wearhouse standing fan. the problem is this increases power usage by about $80aud when running my printers for days at a time. Its still a small price to pay for not dying. Fume hoods are the best way but impractical for most home printers.

I got my resin 3d printer last week. I was worried about the cleaning process and the odor and i will be honest with you, cleaning the models is easy, realy easy, the odor of the resin still is a big strong for my taste but it goes off just by open the windows. Im got the elegoo mars 2 , the 2k screen and im amazed by the details it can produce. I got the clean and cure mashine to, that is good and easy to clean the models. Btw i just leave here this tip: After you clean your models with water or alcahool and remove the suport, you make sure to dry good your models befour you put it into UV light, or you get white bad cured resin on you models. This was the only problem that i got in resing 3d printing, and one model that fall becouse of suction and small supports. I had fdm printer befoure (Anet A8) and have a friend with one fdm printer to Ender 3, and i can say, going from fdm to resin is like a dream. On fdm was there allways something bad and some problems, afraid to leave it working and get fire, extrution stuk etc... on resin had 0 problems Other tip that i see no one giving is, buy light colour resins, they cure faster and so you can print faster. Im thinking about mixing my black resind with my light one becouse the light one is to light and the black to dark

Completely agree with you regarding the 3d printing. I've had filament 3d printers for years and my current one, a Prusa Mini, as been pretty much printing 24/7 since I got it, very shortly after launch. Only got a resin one (Anycubic Photon Ultra) recently but delighted with it and the ability to print quality miniatures now. I'd always had concerns regarding the 'disposable' nature of the LCD screens (i.e. limited life to them, dropping quality as they age and eventually simply throwing them away and replacing them). Hopefully with this being a DLP will eliminate that aspect. My experience so far with the water washable resins (Elegoo) has been entirely negative though. I've found the cleaning aspects to be laborious, even with a washing station, and it produces copious amounts of polluted water that then needs to be disposed of safely. The resin to me is brittle, so in most cases for miniatures it isn't viable if you're regularly going to be supergluing arms and weapons back on. I've also found that it deforms a fair bit on curing. As a result, if you're printing pieces that are meant to fit together, then you'll probably end up with some rework to manage it - not just for miniatures, but for scenery also. I've since turned to the ABS Like Resin (Elegoo) which is far superior in terms of strength, deformation and cleaning. Pieces get two washes in IPA in my cleaning station and there's virtually nothing else needs to be done to them. Definitely a convert, but it won't stop me purchasing miniatures direct from games companies - lets face it, some figures are just too gorgeous to resist. But same can now be said of the 3d community, the amount of talent out there producing quality figures just can't be ignored. At the end of the day, 3d printing is elevating quality levels across the board. It's good for us all.

With your ventilation, I'm assuming you'll have the fan rotation pulling air out. Don't forget that air extraction requires air to flow in from another source. Without that air in, your extraction will be greatly reduced by negative pressure. If you have another vent that air can draw into the room (the other wall for example), you'll have much less fume and smell.
