In this helpful beginner feathering (or some people refer to as swirls) tutorial by Dream Dust Designs, Jennifer Mckay covers her process of how she creates a basic feathering swirl technique, with resin & epoxy pigment pastes, as she experiments with a few new colours. In this video, she explains the recipe she makes ahead for each colour (in the beginning 15 minutes), in the smaller round moulds. .
She shows her experience while trying something new, in hopes it may help others considering trying same technique.
Then after the colours are mixed correctly, she proceeds to showing you the creating in the moulds, and uses skewers to create the feathering. You can also use toothpicks, and for smaller feathering details, you can use sewing needles.
Once you get the technique, recipe and timing practice in, you can experiment with getting finer details in your feathering and use different tools. Some people prefer to use a very fine mist of 99% alcohol at the end for any bubbles that may rise after the manipulating. If doing this, it must be very fine mist, so it doesn't ruin the finish on the cure or effect cure process. If you use a torch (keep flame down low as possible). A bbq lighter will suffice on smaller pieces. Just be sure to keep all flame away from the resin and the moulds, or you can accidentally fuse your resin to your mould, ruining both your art and your mould. Avoid using a heat gun to pop bubbles on this project style, as the air flow may ruin the design you worked for.
Products used in this video from ArtWorks Resin Canada:
Resin used in video is a low viscosity casting resin that we no longer carry in Canada. We now carry and recommend using iCoat TP24 FC casting resin for this technique.
Colourants used are
Colour Passion epoxy pigment pastes and
Le'Rez Expressions epoxy pigment pastes.
Note: Always wear Nitrile gloves when working with epoxy resins . (Latex, vinyl & rubber are not chemical resistant).

Your use of the ice cube tray is GENIUS! MUCH BETTER than using those little individual cups that can be difficult to clean. I just bought it (pack of 3) at Amazon USA. It was $6! I'm currently learning how to create colors of paste using titanium dioxide which makes bright white by itself. Saves a lot of $$$! Thank you for posting this with such a great technique!

@artworksresincanada

Jen has some Liquid Diamonds in the mould sections, then adds a tiny bit of epoxy paste/pigments, & the alcohol as mentioned. So it’s more like an “alternative” to alcohol inks. Alcohol inks are typically not lightfast & can fade, whereas the colours she’s used here are lightfast so don’t fade. Hope that helps 😃

I’m sorry to hear it didn’t meet your expectations. This maybe could be labelled as “not a beginner type video”. This dear sharing artist Jen, was kind enough to take the time to share her experiments, & what her process was using a different method then others often use. Instead of alcohol inks (which are not lightfast & can fade), she was sharing (with artists who wanted potential other options), how they might achieve similar effects with another colourant medium that doesn’t fade.
