My mom accidentally bought me a resin kit, so i decided to buy a ton of molds and pigments so i can start using it! One of the molds i bought was like this one, and I’m still thinking of a design. Hope it goes well.

I have a mold like this and I want to make the bottom the top. Can that be done or not? If not it would probably be because of the edges I'm thinking. Your tray turned out very pretty 😍
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
The bottom can absolutely be the top you just cant put handles in while its wet if you use it that way. Half the molds we use the bottoms are the top it's the only way certain techniques like a blooming ink technique or painting on a mold first work! Go for it!

How do you prevent the design from pooling in the center?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 5 ай бұрын
In my experience you really can't depending on what things you are using unless you let the epoxy get thicker before pouring. Alcohol Inks will always move more than say micas from my experiences over time. It's learning the timing of the pour and how different media's work together. I still sometimes many many years into this get results that aren't remotely what I was expecting..

Hi! Fantastic video! What brand of epoxy are you using?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
I use a bunch of resins.... for larger mostly colored molds like this I like the value of pro marine, but found i like super clear a bit better overall and the price is similar so I believe that will be my main go to for large molds now.

I see some videos people drill holes to add the handles, you didn;t, would this be strong enough? I am starting to make a tray and was wondering.. thanks. Love your video.
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
You can add handles later... I prefer to do them at the time of pouring....
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
If you do decide to drill holes just be careful and try to do it before it's super hard and use proper PPE because the dust will be very fine and easy to inhale and you risk cracking the piece the harder it gets.

is it ok to use resin for this style of molding? Or is epoxy more preffered?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
So all epoxy is technically resin but not all resins are epoxy. But yes I would personally always use an epoxy resin for this type of project.

Will the handles be stable without having them screwed in ?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the will they are set all the way in and I would have to actually break the resin to get them out. I prefer setting them in this way to screwing in from the bottom.

What is the white and black stuff your pouring? Is it epoxy with white mica powder?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
I usually add black dye to my black mica I will have to watch later and double check though! Sometimes I add white dye as well to the whites but I don't think I did here... the drop or 2 off added dye or even ink can give it a smoother color if that makes sense.
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
So it was just black and white dyes I didn't use mica at all on this one surprisingly....

I dont know the total this was a long time ago I always recommend measuring your mold before pouring for the first time by pouring water in them.

Do you find that these trays get “bendy or flexible” when they get warm or are not sitting flat for a period of time?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
They can in the beginning remain bendy and I suspect if left outside they for a longer period of time they would.
@nataliehills8132
@nataliehills8132 3 жыл бұрын
Some have cured for months. I keep my house cold, but live in the AZ heat and if they aren’t flat they will change shape temporarily until I lay them flat. At outdoor venues, they are very flexible. I’ve considered using plexiglass to add rigidity but it might interfere with the look. I’m considering trying other resin, I use Stonecoat Countertop resin mainly, but have also tried Pro Marine as well. Any thoughts?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
Pro marine will always go back to bendy since it has a very low heat tolerance. I'm surprised the SCC flexes so much. Try doing the bulk of the tray as normal leaving about 1/4 of the mold empty then topping it with just a clear layer with no additives. Epoxy cures hardest with no additives and it's very easy on pieces so large to get to high a ratio of additives. Which can lead to a softer cure.

Thank you for your reply. I just ordered some casting resin, soI will see if that helps it keep its shape. ❤️🤞🏻

Is that 600ml total, combined with the hardener? I'm trying to figure out how much it would cost to make a tray. The epoxy is so expensive!!!
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 3 жыл бұрын
Total mixed, epoxy can get very expensive! For this type of tray pro marine will absolutely work as long as you are not going with tons of whites and clear, it's a bit less expensive than some of the others!

Also I dont know where the other company on pro marine and colors went.... I don't like using this pro marine for light it white because it doesn't have a uv protectant in it... although they do have a new version with a uv protectant now I believe

You don't torch it or use a heat gun?
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle
@RaesTurquoiseTurtle 2 жыл бұрын
Not usually for my molds I just spritz them with alcohol if anything. I've accidentally fused the epoxy to a few coasters molds using heat before and I'd rather not risk it so if I do torch it's fast and nowhere near the edges

Epoxy? Depends on the size of the mold I typically fill each new mold with water to get an accurate measure.
