Hi all! Today’s #tutorial is on how to get those lovely #epoxy #resin waves that are oh so popular right now! I’m new to resin crafts myself and especially waves so if I can do it then so can you.
Since uploading this video, I’ve been using a different brand of resin products from Rockstar Resins so there’s a slightly different deal available with them. Is there a way to use a hair dryer to achieve the effect of the heat gun if I use a low setting or will that not work?
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Katy, I haven't used a hairdryer for this technique before but they're basically the same thing 🤷🏼‍♀️ I believe hairdryers are more powerful though so I would advise having it on a high heat but a low power setting...don't want the resin flying everywhere! Then to begin with, maybe hold the hairdryer further away than you would expect just to be on the safe side 💨

What do you put along the sides or below the coasters to avoid the resin getting stuck there?
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Supriya. In this video I put painter's tape around my coasters but more recently I've preferred the method of applying a layer of liquid latex on the underside edges. Once your resin cures, you just peal the latex off and any resin drips pop off so easily. Hope that helps x

Hi Joyce. I applied a similar technique to a 24" x 36" canvas a while back and it worked great. The only difference was that I painted vague beach colours down first. There's a picture of it on my instagram @hannah_somerville A slightly unusual suggestion for the smaller pieces, how about large clam shells with waves inside. Not sure how you'd stick them to the wall but I've done a video on ocean shells too. You could do a few of those and dot them around? X

Hi! Thanks so much for your comment ☺️ it means a lot to me! To answer your question, no, I don't always do the 2 layers. I made this video some time ago now and since then I have tweaked my process a little. It's still the same technique of blowing out the waves but I tend to do one layer on a sand-resin-mix base. This video here is of a clock I made but I would still apply the same method with my coasters kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpaUjKeZvb-4mGg.html I hope that helps with seeing a slightly different approach. I do always finish my coasters off with a clear top coat just to level off the surface too. X

@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 3 жыл бұрын
@@christinawindsor4321 Hello! Thanks so much ☺️ I never really colour my resin using alcohol inks but I've heard it works just fine 👍🏻. Saying this, I think I'd be reluctant to use white alcohol ink for the waves simply because the white needs to be thick and opaque and even though white alcohol ink is opaque, I just can't imagine it providing the right consistency 🤷🏼‍♀️ that's just my guess though, I could be completely wrong! Colouring the blues with alcohol ink should work fine though. Sorry for the half answered question 😂

Thank you for this. I noticed you put this layer on top of one you have already done. Do you alway do two layers of resin and pigment?
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials Жыл бұрын
You’re welcome ☺️ No not always. It depends on how the first layer turns out and what sort of look I’m going for really. It also depends on the surface I’m applying my waves technique to. It’s not an exact science and you’ll probably find your own preference along the way from experimenting. If I can help further then just ask ☺️
@louehtomlinstyle
@louehtomlinstyle 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly a silly question, but when I tried this technique my white spread into the centre of my coaster and hasn’t kept the ‘wave’ effect. Do you have any idea why?? It’s prob a novice mistake I’ve made!!😩😅
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I'm trying to picture what you mean. I like to make sure that my white is quite opaque to start with and that when I add a line of it to my coaster, it's touching the other resin but also it's now the new border between the blue resin and the cured coaster base, rather than being added completely within the blue resin. This way you will always have white at the front. I hope that makes sense....😅 You can always do this even after your white has spread into the centre though, because white foam forms in lots of random places in the sea ☺️ I even do this in one of my other videos which might help you see how you can use what happened to your advantage. Check out my Resin Ocean Clock tutorial if you can x

Hi! Do you think I can use a regular lighter instead of blow torch?
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! I know people who do and I used to use a lighter for acrylic pouring so it's doable, but just be careful because the end can get really hot due to the angle you're having to hold it at. I found my lighters didn't last too long either because they'd sort of melt off at the top but I only used cheap ones. If you have a better quality one or one with a long stem then they might work better 👍🏻 x

I have watched of all of these Types of videos but the resin I use apparently is not working what type of resin are you using I see multiple versions of resin on the website I was using regular Apoxsee resin from the craft store that is not working for the effect with the hot air gun
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! After having tried this technique over and over again even since making this video, I find that the best resin is a standard coating resin (it may be called other things but from Rockstar Resins they call it coating resin) with a 1:1 formula. I find it works best when it's of a fairly high viscosity, so quite firm, with a work time of around 30-45 mins. You want to have to blow on the resin for a few seconds with the heat gun before it starts to move. I think craft stores often stock resins that are of a slightly lower viscosity (runnier) for casting or jewellery crafts. It may still be OK to use the resin you have, you might just have to leave the resin to sit for a little while after mixing it. I also have a 2:1 formula resin from Rockstar Resins which is a much thinner resin but if I leave it to sit for an hour after mixing, it firms up enough for me to use with this technique perfectly. I suggest trying that first before buying more resin but if you plan on doing lots more resin projects in the future then the viscosity and work time are some things to bear in mind. Hopefully that helps 👍🏻
@TheGreatlordlee
@TheGreatlordlee 3 жыл бұрын
@@hscraftytutorials Yes I use the resin at the craft stores called amazing clear cast but it takes 24 hours to dry and it’s really soupy and stays quite runny for a while and isn’t working too well. Thanks for the info on the resin I think I will try that brand from that site
@hscraftytutorials
@hscraftytutorials 3 жыл бұрын
