I used to use the exact same bar and triangle hooks you do. I also used a 4-inch step stool I got from Amazon. I had been waiting for someone to come out with a bar similar to the X3 with its hooks that hold the bands without having to screw them closed. Fortunately, there are those kinds of options out there now, plus they come in two- and three sections so they travel well. I made my own footplate from a cutting board and a couple of 4x4s. I looked at the stepper you are using but could not determine if it had a groove underneath to accommodate the bands. I''ve been using bands for about 4 years and they give me a great workout. Keep up the good work. Enjoyed your video

I've been watching your videos all the afternoon and loved them. The only exercise that's bothering me on how awkward it looks are squats. I've been wondering if the use of a dipping belt could potentially be used to do some sort of belt squats as the range of motion should be similar to Romanian deadlift. I also have been thinking about doing hack squats (barbell version) it would be great if you tested these as you already have the setup. Thanks a lot for the great content!

Similar setup as yours, but I use the Bodylastics Curl Bar. It took a bit to get used to, but it's an awesome alternative and it collapses if you want to travel (it's 5lbs though.) I got the same platform as you and unfortunately, if I use the heavier bands, it starts cutting into the bands (one of them started to fray when I do deadlifts 😔) but if you combine them with other bands instead of double folding one band, it solves the fraying issue. It's still an awesome setup though.
@GamerBody
@GamerBody 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting that yours starts to fray if you double the bands. Mine hasn't yet after a lot of testing. How long is the bar? I wonder if it is shorter and that leads to the bands rounding more on the edges of the platform and reach that line that runs near the base of it causing the fray. Interesting that single looping the bands doesn't have this same issue though. Did you buy a second set of bands to use them?

@GamerBody

I don't have the X3 at this time but seems like it is the same concept. The platform is larger to stand on and gives a bit more pre-stretch, and the bar is a bit longer, but you do lose portability if you want to use it traveling.

@GamerBody
@GamerBody 2 жыл бұрын
They can build muscle, just not the most optimal option. You could even say that about my free weight setup as they are not optimal either. It definitely can work, you just need to make sure you are reaching failure in the set you do to activate all of the muscle fibers since the largest of the fibers will be recruited last (when you elicit max effort under fatigue).

I don't do them at home. However, as long as you stay in control and don't try throwing around heavy resistance as fast as possible it will be fine. Your body can handle a good amount of resistance (especially after years of training) but most people try to move really heavy weight way too fast raising risk of injury drastically.

I use a variety of equipment in my workouts. Including bands. Recently it’s been all body weight based. I switch out from time to time. In METCONs, I do use dumbbells, body weight, and bands in it. I haven’t recently in tabatas. My hiit workouts changes from time to time. I’ll try the step platform for the resistance bands. That x-3 bar is cool but the guy promoting it sounds like a gimmick.

The X3 bar is where I got the idea but I was not willing to put $500+ towards it. I agree the guy who developed it is a bit of a con artist, but many of the principles he mentions are correct. Will you build muscle 3 times faster, no, but it is a tool you can use to build muscle. Jay Vincent has a couple videos going off on how bad he is (Jay also doesn't like bands because of the strength curve). I'd watch his videos if you want a breakdown as to why what the X3 bar guy says is wrong about the results you will achieve.

@@GamerBody exactly. It’s more portable than weights. But no, you don’t build muscles 3 times faster. I use those for overloading when I can’t with weights. Dumbbells are the king for free weight training. Barbells have their place for heavy loading and you can use the bands to assist with overloading. There’s a lot that goes into building muscles. Nutrition, genetics, how we’re training, and much more.

The METAL platform of the X3 bar looks like it is designed to shred bands. My own platform design uses rollers to eliminate this problem completely. For the last three months, I have been training with bands and body weight exclusively. I went to the gym twice to see what happened to my strength. Same or better, even though bands don't load the stretch position well. Doing brief isometric holds at the contracted position does help. Training with bands is very time-efficient. This allows me to train the full body each day (upper body in the morning, legs and shoulders in the evening).

As for the bands' strength curve, is the problem that the point of most resistance is at the top of the movement where for weights this usually provides the least resistance? In that case, where should the most resistance be? in the middle of the movement? If so, would using a tougher band but going through a shorter range of motion (not going all the way to the top) help? I've also seen bands combined with weights to cover each other's weaknesses.
@GamerBody
@GamerBody 2 жыл бұрын
The main issue is where myosin and actin overlap (kind of a big topic) but in short, you want to best and most even overlap as that is where you are strongest. Bands are great at the starting point as it allows you to get past the initial sticking points free weights create, but when fully contracted, the most force is placed when the actin and myosin are bunched up. Note, I am taking this based off of how Jay Vincent describes it. That bunching creates a weaker point vs the strongest where they lay perfectly together. For example, I biceps curl should start light, go to peak resistance just above parallel to the ground, and then drop resistance at the top range of motion. I hope that help, but also a good video topic ;)

The bar is the width it is for you to change the position of your hands each set, if you do so you will isolate different smaller sections of the muscle that you are working. When you rip and tear in only one place you limit overall muscle growth to the same section of that muscle. When you use the bar only you neglect strengthening the weaker side of your body. It is necessary to remove the bar from time to time to strengthen your weaker side. It's basically the same thing that happened when there is no bar and your using free weights. However it's much safer to work with the resistance band when no spotter is available. Sincerely, Ex Gym Rat

The amount of "isolation" for hand grip difference is so small (if any) it isn't worth it. If you want variety, then sure, change up the hands. Now other muscle groups might come into play more with different hand positions, but changing the results of the same muscle group, if training hard enough, won't matter as they should all be recruited and fatigued accordingly. An example is a chest press width vs. close grip as the chest press is most chest dominant, where the close grip is more triceps dominant.

Also, you are mistaken about the optimal resistance point. Resistance bands actually offer BETTER optimal resistance at the PEAK contraction, which is where you want it because the muscle is strongest at peak contraction. you want the power curve to INCREASE as the lift progresses, which is exactly what the resistance band does. You need to do a little bit better research.
@GamerBody
@GamerBody Жыл бұрын
Depends on the exercise and moment arm. For some this may be true, but you actually don't want max resistance on some exercises when the muscle is fully contracted because the actin/myosin bunch up and get in the way, reducing the force your muscle can produce against that resistance. For example, a standard biceps curl goes from weak > strong > weak so you actually want the most resistance near the middle of the movement. The strength to resistance curve doesn't match the entire way, so resistance bands are not optimal in this scenario. However, as long as you go close enough to failure it probably won't matter that much, but it could create a sticking point as well as you tire out and the bunching of actin/myosin reducing the force you can generate can't keep up with the bands resistance. So while your point is true for some exercises, it is not for all. Only machines designed with this in mind can provide perfect strength to resistance curves.

I have switched between equipment from time to time (dumbbells and Speediance) but I was using them regularly for a while. Even if the band tension does reduce over time, the cost is still much better than other options, weighs very little (if traveling or finding a spot to keep them) and have the ability to provide a lot of tension for a long while. I hope that helps.

Another wonderful thing--in the annals of holding a camera too close--is that the camera is about eighteen inches away from the speaker's face, and cuts out his arm and leg muscles that the viewer would be interested in seeing. Also, I don't like hearing people speak when they're eighteen inches from my face.
