I show how our resonance tubes become louder or softer depending on the water level within. The difference between two resonant lengths is equal to one half the sound's wavelength, so we can measure the whole wavelength and calculate the speed of sound with this experiment.

Why can't all experiments on yt be like this?

Thanks a lot! Didn't know that Resonance tube is that easy to understand! From my Physics book I was really confused in what it was talking about. You just cleared my junks from my brain and made it clean like anything :D Thanks :D

Over all great demonstration. However I cringed when the tuning fork was whacked onto the table to begin vibrations. They gouge up and diminish their ability to produce pure tones and instead produce more harmonics. A reflex hammer is the best way to initiate the vibration cycle of the tuning fork.

Loved the video, the error in frequency is likely causing my calculation to give speed of sound in air to be 290m/s but it's a beautiful experiment nonetheless

f = (2n - 1) * c/(4*L). If you know the frequency (f = 1000Hz) and the speed of sound (c = 343 m/s) then L = (2n -1)* c / (4*f) where n is any integer (1,2,3,4) of sequential resonant frequencies.

Why does the sound actually increase?
@niloferrr
@niloferrr 2 жыл бұрын
because the natural frequency of the air column becomes equal to the frequency of the tuning fork and thus resonance takes place, this makes the amplitude of vibrations infinite and so, loudness increases (loudness is directly proportional to square of amplitude!) hope you understood :)

@@niloferrr How can the water level affect the natural frequency of the air column, like how can it be increased/decreased by simply just changing the water level? thanks
@Rei-xg9fs
@Rei-xg9fs 6 ай бұрын
@@phroggothephirst6288 speed of sound = frequency * wavelentgh. speed of sound is constant, so for a certain frequency need a certain wavelentgh, for you to hear sound the tuning fork need to be in resonance with the tube, that is have same frequency. there is a node at the surface of water level and an antinode roughly at the end of the tube. distance between the first node and antinode is wavelength/4. so as we adjust the water level the distance between the node and antinode changes which change the wavelength of the tube. and as the speed of sound is constant so when the wavelength changes the frequency needs to change to keep the speed constant. that is how the frequency changes with water level.

@@julia-ex7im value of speed of sound, probably by taking the values from the video. Its not the accurate value of sound since there is no end correction.
