When will the British Army put a stop to these working servicemen and horses being treated like Disney exhibits. It is very disturbing when you consider security aspects.

If you Google or ( KZfaq ( The Queens Guards : A Year In Service ) you will get to follow these young soldiers go through gruelling training from day 1 until they graduate to becomes a Kings guard. Both soldiers ( man & horse ). This is a mini series but you walk away knowing so much more. After watching I have a higher respect for both soldiers. The horses are funny when having playtime at the ocean.

I think it makes the incident feel real to them. The trouble is that they don't realise or think about what the horse feels.

I think they may believe it will make the horse feel less threatened by their presence, and probably because they see others do it. Most people like horses I think but rarely get the chance to get close to one. Probably not dissimilar to reaction to dogs and cats. Personally, out of respect, I wouldn't stand too close and would avoid sudden movements or giving the horse the impression I was trying to sneak up on it ( they are prey animals)

Yes all three services are having there budgets cuts, the same with the reserves. A considerable part of the budget they have is being sent to the Ukraine in Arms and materials. The problem is the military is one of two public funded organisations which cannot go on strike, the other being the Prison Service. The only way the armed services will be properly funded is if we go to war or if the general public make such a fuss about the lack of funding that the government is forced to up fund it

You can find it on the internet but as a former rider it's a signal to the horse that they are dismounting and all the weight will be momentarily on one stirrup. The horse will tense up and balance itself.

I've been wondering the same thing.

That's the signal to the horse the rider is dismounting. It sounds harsher than it is if they hit against the saddle.

The Guards don’t hit the Horse, they hit the saddle to let the Horse know the Guard is dismounting. .

@@charlie4739 Why do they also hit the horse on the neck before the saddle as well then? I have seen this done many times I have watched nearly knocked one horse sideways, had worked out the slapping of the saddle even then they miss sometimes and hit just past the saddle, I am sure it isn't deliberate.

They slap the side of the horses neck to tell them well done then slap the saddle or the fur they sit on to let the horse know they are dismounting. 😊
