it wasn't a false accusation, he had been touching his patients in ways that a therapist shouldn't. this was a wake up call for him that he needed to reevaluate how he interacted with his patients

Healthcare worker here, I've had the friendliest families or patients suddenly turn on their caregivers. Best to keep that distance, when people are ill, emotions fluctuate, and perceptions change with illness.

My wonderful mom quit her job and went to another city to take care of her father in law when he had major surgery. She took care of him for a good couple of months. Took care of him physically, bought and cooked food, took care of his bills, cleaned his house and so on. He was grateful at the time. Then when she returned home, she discovered that others had been telling him that she had stole money and took advantage of him. He never spoke to her again. It broke her heart. Illness and bad influencers. The influencers got the majority of his estate when he passed. They did a good number on his mind.

Those questions are weighted to make anyone look bad. So many things are a minefield these days. Just being a good person isn't enough. You seem to have to weigh every action and word prior to implementation. Feels like walking on eggshells.

he is a therapist there are rules about what physical contact is appropriate in a therapeutic setting for this exact reason. if a therapist is touching my leg thats not ok

Y’all made him feel disgusting for what he does and now y’all are thanking him as if those questions and thought won’t be running through his head he will constantly ask himself if a child is uncomfortable around him and that’s hurtful he is an amazing doctor on this show and has saved many children she wanted to make him look like a monster and she got her wish smh 🤦🏾‍♀️

@@ragingzim Literally every single question asked was yes or no zero room for explanation or context. Of course he's going to look guilty that way. Professional is finding out the context from both sides of the yes and no, not "Tell us yes or no so we can judge you based on how it sounds from black and white decisions". That is, in fact, NOT professional.

When i saw that, I was a bit shocked and wonder is this how it really is in real life? I was an infant and 3 year old lead teacher and I am know pursuing a Psych degree. This will be hard for me because some children NEED affection, however I CAN understand where they are coming from. You have to not only protect the children but also yourself. HOWEVER, working with children on the spectrum, I learned boundaries. Some don’t like to be touched. So i would ask the little ones, “do you want a hug?” First

its common practice to not touch a patient without them either asking for a hug or asking if they would like to be hugged but touching his knee or leg is 100% crossing a line

ask them first if they want a hug, a therapist has the responsibility to make sure their patient is comfortable with the physical touch first before taking that action.

As a mental health therapist I walk a thin line between my patients and the unprofessional. Hearing some of the stories all you want to do is hug them and let them know they aren’t alone

Because Predators go to where the Prey is. Hospitals. Schools. Law enforcement. Daycare. Defence forces. Those gestures that we do out of kindness and compassion predators will use those same actions and behaviours and words as bait. And, this is why we can't have nice things.

I mean to a degree but I’ve never been hugged or even a touch on the shoulder by my psychiatrist and honestly that would be awkward. This doctor and any doctor isn’t suppose to ever touch a patient in any way unless there trying to harm someone of themselves. People have trauma. I don’t like to be touched. Even when someone puts there hand on my shoulder I sometimes flinch. His job especially is dealing with people with very delicate pasts.

@@FullTimePatient37 but at the end of the day its not up to us or them to say what is and isnt abuse to someone. When it comes to abuse accusation, if the victim says its abuse then it HAS to bee looked at as abuse until discovered otherwise. An example is holding onto someone wrist.if someone holds onto anothers wrist and they dont do anything then we can say its not abuse but to the victim it is because they didnt want to be held but were too afraid to say anything

edit : my stance on this has changed thanks to further education and two lovely people taking the time to type out well thought out messages on why it would likely just be bad all around unless a patient asks and even then professional boundaries need to be kept. i will be leaving my original comment as is for anyone else who would like context for what the others have said :) as someone getting their masters in counseling and psychology i totally disagree with not being allowed to touch anyone. i get it without invitation it can be a bad idea, but it shouldn’t be such a serious offense to touch someone’s shoulder or knee unprompted. sit them down, have a discussion, and then move on. let the therapist learn to ask their patients if it’s alright to give reassuring pats at the start of sessions. i think that would be much more helpful

@@mariamsixarulidze3166 thank you so much for your comment. that was actually very insightful and meaningful to hear. i’m 2 years away from even getting my license to practice so i have time to learn the full scale of things but i appreciate hearing different perspectives. arguably the hardest part of being a therapist is making sure you don’t get attached to patients. i will keep your comment in mind as i go into my practice. :)

Being invited to by a patient is one thing, but asking patients if they would like physical contact can also cause issues, depending on how it is phrased. A Therapist can often be conflated with authority, especially in children, and a patient may not feel comfortable or just able to say no. A patient may also not want to displease/disappoint or give the impression of rejecting the therapist, and feel coerced into saying yes. It's a very fine line to walk. I have autism so I became very comfortable very early rejecting physical touch and it's never been a problem for me to say no to anyone. However, I have some relatives with a lot of anxiety and self esteem issues that also don't like physical contact but have never been able to properly advocate for themselves. I know if a therapist directly asked them if physical contact way okay, they would say yes, despite it not being okay. One way to avoid accidentally pressuring them can be to present several options for potential reassurance, with some involving no physical contact, so the patient doesn't feel led to a particular choice.

i did one behavioral health rotation and i was taught NEVER touch a child unless they ask for a hug or something. i've carried this throughout my life cause honestly it's a great rule to have (and i'm a touchy feely person with my friends and family). but strangers/kids are off limits. he should absolutely know this.

While I agree that you should always ask for consent before physical touch, unless of course you really know the person and they trust you, I feel like these questions are worded in such a way that the person answering them can be villified very easily. In this case, Iggy's methods were questioned to such a degree that from that moment on he would start to question himself, which is heartbreaking considering he's such a fantastic therapist who has helped so many kids and people in general. However, I completely understand why these rules are in place, because it's for the safety of the patients. It's just sad when it's the good doctors who are accused of harming patients.

but he did harm his patients by trying to be their friend rather then a therapist. the whole issue is that he realized after the fact that he set this kid up to not be able to talk to anyone else other then him because of the unprofessional therapy setting he was using.

no he acted in an unprofessional manor. a therapist should never touch a patient unless the patient says its ok. not a hand on the shoulder, or grabbing the face, not a hug and for sure not a touch on the knee or leg. these are all unprofessional actions if done without the consent of the patient. some patients need a hug but they either need to ask for it or need to give their consent to it but never should a therapist just reach out and grab a patient because they think they need it.

The same observed physical action can have totally different motivations behind them. Our experiences colour our perceptions. One person thinks they see comfort. Another person thinks they see predation. Yet another will see something else entirely. The person who witnessed the touching on the head did the right thing by reporting it. The deputy medical director did the right thing by investigating it. The psychiatrist did the right thing by re-evaluating his methods. Avoiding the appearance of impropriety is important, and is proactive, not reactive. Disregarding potential and/or covering up actual impropriety is always the wrong decision. The only way this haunts his reputation forever is if he already has this reputation and/or refuses to change his approach. Working with vulnerable people is a whole collection of things that can go wrong

Because it removes any ambiguities in those behaviors, an interpretation of the action isn't necessary if the action doesn't happen in the first place. Also you can never actually know the motive if the person. Finally it's like how bosses in a workplace shouldn't offer sex, even harmlessly, to employees because that boss is the only person in that interaction that actually knows if there is anything nefarious that is happening or could happen in the future.

It's actually about consent. If someone touches you and you don't like it then it doesn't matter if it's sexual or not. That way of thinking allows people to abuse their power, and they have. We know these characters because it's what the show allows us to see. If this was IRL then we'd be questioning the doctor because this does happen. It's why doctors need to be professional and not play favorites, its also why laws are in place. It's also why it's hard at times for people like this therapist because they care too much that they don't care about themselves.

5:30 That's the issue, he's acting like a saint rather than a professional. If you want to help someone as a medical professional, then remain a professional. Therapists shouldn't touch a patient without consent, especially if a patient doesn't bloody ask. Usually it's a pat on a shoulder or on the arm.

He doesn’t act like a saint Iggie was emotionally abused/ignored. He was a struggling kid but everyone always went to him to talk or vent. He became a therapist that could help others in ways he wasn’t helped . The boy in the video was hurt by a family member and projected it on the Dr. Luckily Iggie story does end a little better and he remains a lovely therapist ❤

child intensive therapy is different. a lot of kids NEED love and positive reinforcement and positive physical touch (hugs, pts on the back,, high fives, smaller kids like to be held sometimes) because the lines have been blurred so much by trauma. it's human nature to comfort children literally plus he's a parent. he didn't do anything wrong

@@drsteveaplier7646Actually that is a rule in therapy. If this is about them saying he shouldnt touch the kid then hes right. The therapist is allowed to ask if the paitent would like to be comforted because of situations like this. A lot is at stake when dealing with people because ypu never know how they will react. Doesn't matter of the paitent is a child or adult, unless asked or getting permission therapists shouldn't touch that's not their job nor does it require them to touch people. If you were talking about what they said about his character, then I have no opinion on that.

I suggest people read laws regarding therapists and how they should begave with a patient, as well as watch/read IRL therapists and how they conduct their sessions. There are law in places to protect both patient and doctor. If the doctor doesnt get permission then they shouldn't touch ESPECIALLY in therapy. People get triggered and can get aggressive or they can misinterpret their actions as malicious. Idk if this therapists did, but you need permission aka consent by the patient especially if they are kids because they are minors. Thats why this situation is so bad, he touched a minor(nonsexually yes) that wasnt family. Theres a reason why docotrs need to leace Familia connection behind. You can emphasize qnd sympathize and comfort the paitents, but ONLY if they give permission. At times paitents will even ask. This is a show and know how the characters really act, but IRL is different. People have assulted and taken advantage of people both as a doctor and a patient. Its also why doctors should sit so close to them. Please understand that real legal consequences occur when people are too nice or ignorant about this.

I understand how this poor kid feels. I was thirteen. Had of all the perverts in my life before the age of thirteen That person was the hardest to get over. It's a nice once that screw you up. When somebody's angry and screwed up you have an idea of what's wrong. I can only say i'm thankful that i'm a christian I think if I hadn't experienced the healing that I have in Jesus. I probably would have a harder time dealing with it. I don't understand why we don't have strict your policies for people who are abusers I lived in taiwan for twenty years and I came back five months I'm now learning about something called maps I cannot believe that in america they accept this I lived in california tonight was twenty three I just don't understand
