At 01:28 hours Saturday morning, Han-Le-Co Station 33 and Medic 75 were dispatched to a structure fire behind the Sonic Drive-in on Airport Road. Chief 33 (Knoll) was advised from dispatch that a garage was on fire in the area of Hoover and Lloyd Streets.
Once on scene, Chief 33 reported smoke showing and transmitted a second alarm sending Hanover Engine 15, Ladder 15, Ladder 46 (East Allen), and Rescue 241 as the F.A.S.T. (Catasauqua).
Engine 33 arrived and brought a water supply from the intersection and stretched one hand line. Using a key from the Knox Box, Chief 33 unlocked the door without having to use force.
Firefighters found a fire on the top floor landing over the office. Due to high heat, the crew came out and threw a ground ladder and went to the roof to ventilate and check for extension in the roof.

FD actually used the lock box key to gain access. Wow, lots of opposition in the comments for using a water spray upon opening the door; sending a two men crew upstairs; venting the roof; even one about parking the ladder truck near the building, which I think was the funniest. It is an excellent egress point, and water supply. If smoke venting turns to flames, prepositioning the apparatus gets them ahead of the game. Advancing a hand crew is SOP. They determined there was fire in an attic space and venting was required. It would appear the second floor was an add-on internal structure since it blocks part of the roll up door on the other side. The add-on internal structure should have a fire wall, floor to ceiling. Smoke in the upper section of the garage space suggests there was an inadequate fire wall.

Gotta ask. When they first opened the door, what was the purpose of applying water at what appeared to be nothing? Just wondering.

They were probably making sure that a backdraft wouldn't occur. Better be safe than sorry.
@retiredarthritic2083
@retiredarthritic2083 5 жыл бұрын
Gregg Goss the reason for applying water immediately is that it cools the interior making it less likely to encounter flashover and yes Jared is also correct about preventing a backdraft. Another reason is that by cooling the interior it makes if less likely that firefighters will be less likely to suffer heat related medical distress.

@@retiredarthritic2083 , what about thermal balance? Without being able to actually see the interior conditions, I personally wouldn't make a judgement. On the surface, it seems like a bad move.

Gregg, there was a window in the door. Could _you_ see any interior conditions? Nope. Also, there is smoke in there ... which is hard to see through.

@@gregggoss2210 The thermal balance can be disrupted if water is flowed in a constant stream as long a the fire fighter uses short bursts to cool the upper parts of the room the thermal balance will not invert. This is why in my old department we trained to apply water in short bursts initially and then to hit it low splashing the water all over the room using steam to cool the higher and hotter layers and then raise the streams to create a pseudo sprinkler effect where water splashes down on the fire. This also deals with Flashover and Backdraft dangers.

@@dug2fire I don't know what it's like in the US, but in The Netherlands the truck/engine commander is responsible for the safety of his crew so makes sure his crewmembers are fully geared up (including BA) before they get to work on a fire. Failing to do so would certainly have consequences for the commander.

I could be wrong, but unless my old eyes were playing tricks on me, I would swear that there were steps leading to the 2nd floor just inside the building directly in line with the entrance door through which the two volunteers advanced a handline. If my old eyes were correct, then it would seem the stairway would have been an easy and most direct route to the seat of the fire. The order to open/cut ventilation holes in the metal roof was simply unnecessary and a large waste of time, not to mention, a costly and destructive means by which to reach the fire. BTW: (1) Playing water on smoke accomplishes nothing in either suppressing nor in extinguishing a fire, as is seen in this video. (2) For the on-scene Fire Command/Incident Officer to send or to allow an undermanned 2 man crew to enter a commercial building which visibly has black smoke issuing from its high points, without an additional handline along with a full backup secondary crew following in firefighting support and/or to rescue the first 2 man crew, is neither a prudent nor a safe nor an acceptable firefighting technique. This, being especially so, inasmuch as the building is of the large garage type. That meaning that there is no way of determining if anything inside the building may well be exceptionally dangerous to the firefighters, such as explosives, fuels, chemicals and/or another highly flammable material is stored/kept/used within the building's interior. (3) Setting up an Aerial ladder and/or any other firefighting apparatus (as this VFD did) within a matter of a few feet of a structure which has been designated as a fire scene, is yet another absolute "No, No" in acceptable fire apparatus procedures. Further by doing so, would automatically call for the quick demotion in rank for/of the Company Officer in command of the apparatus in question.

Wow Shadow, you must be the greatest firefighter ever to be able to crap all over this department, when you first open a door and introduce air into the structure, there is the possibility of a rollover, so a quick shot of water, that's a pretty logical thing to do, as well as touching the door and handle to see how much heat there is, the subject of venting, and adding air to fuel the fire, well that can be debated on every call, and every call is different, this was not a big fire as seen by the smoke coming out of the top of the garage doors, a quick look with the thermal camera didn't show a heat source on that floor, so why not open a door and get some smoke out, light and visibility gave them the chance to see what possible hazards there were in the garage in case the fire spread, its not all about going in blind and getting water on the fire, observing possible hazards along the way is important, I have no issues with what or how they did the first floor, now this is where you are a critic with no real information, when they went to the second floor...……...first you were not there, you did not observe what the firefighters did, the size of the fire, the size of the room and what was burning you did not observe, even a small fire with a flat metal roof, is like walking into an oven, then you knock the fire down with water and fire creates steam, as in thermal burns, my guess is they hit the fire and got the hell out of there because of the heat with a flat metal roof there is no were for the heat to go, if my captain comes out and says we need to vent the roof, I would trust in his judgment, I have no issues with what this fire crew did and I would work with any of them any time...………..respect to this crew.

Well you are wrong in a couple of areas. We absolutely teach put water on smoke in HIGH HEAT conditions. It prevents flashover. Clearly no high heat when they forced the door. And from any size up I can do just by video I doubt there was any at all. I see you are a fan of the 2 in 2 out nonsense. Lets say this is a residential fire with people trapped...still waiting for second due companies?? B

Also, I'll add to Turd's comment ^^^... Even the steam helps reduce temperatures as well. The FF's really couldn't know exactly what they'd be facing inside such a commercial/industrial building, and smoke blocks the view. Therefore, releasing smoke and hot gasses from the upper areas will help them see better during the attack, and it will release the hot gasses. I am yet again amazed that, the smoke/heat has ALREADY caused significant damages to the contents ... YET, people worry about cutting a hole in the roof..!

The Shadow from what I saw the fire had to have been upstairs and the initial burst of water was completely unnecessary as well as opening the overhead doors right away. If they truly thought it was near flashover point why open the door partway almost immediately after the first guy went in? That smoke appeared to just be up high and not at all low

Hey “Mr Operations Officer” where is the rest of you PPE and SCBA? 👎. Chief or first due Engine Officer...how dare you not stretch a 2 1/2 into a commercial fire, again 👎. Pull everyone out and cut a hole in this roof? Wow. Must have been some real heat up those stairs where the smoke was barely pushing from. 👎
