I'm with you, and stated it on his video. He should've reached out to Hinderer first. If I have an issue with something, I'm contacting the manufacturer, if not after the first one, definitely the second! How you collect 8 of something without reaching out is beyond me. It's the mature thing to do, and you could also be preventing other consumers from personal injury(if it is actually a "real" problem). I'm not accusing Jared of a con job here, but my fuckery meter gets pegged when I see content like this. It's a shame too, to see the dog pile of negative Hinderer comments under that video, and it is entirely based on anecdotal evidence.

I do like Hinderer knives except the Heat Treatment. A knife in that geometry & price should be pulling all they can out of the steel Dr Larrin Thomas (the guy who invented the steel) even says Magnacut doesn't lose any toughness until after 62.5 hrc... so at over $400 what's the benefit in 30 thou bte @ 60hrc Magnacut? Besides it being a axe!?

I whacked mine. I’ve never had one fail, had many hinderers in many models. The S45VN is great. Mine had a bad tip, it happens, I got it fixed. Rick has said and Sam has said why they are ground how they are, why they have the edge they do, and why they have the hrc they do. Their M390 and S45VN is just as good as everyone else.

I saw that video and all my Hinderer knives are rock solid and I’m very happy with them!!!! I’m wondering if they were from the secondary as well!???

The two hinderer’s I currently own both came from you in 2021 and 2022 I believe. The first is a Jurassic that has excellent fit and finish and has always felt super solid. The second is a skinny harpoon spanto 3.5 which has always felt much more clunky and just not as solid plus has centering issues. My biggest gripe though is that the 20cv doesn’t feel great or de-burr well when sharpening and doesn’t hold an edge like my 20cv Arius. With all that said, the lock up has always felt solid and I haven’t seen any evidence of lock failure, although I won’t spine whack them hard because I believe it’s terrible for the lock and lock face.

I just watched the video you are referencing. The sound of those knives with locks that failed sure had the sound of loose hardware to me. My Hinderer knives have a distinct sound when they lock up and hardware is loose.

Remember folks, fanboyism makes products stagnate while everything else around them progresses. Some of the brands and models i like the most are the same ones i criticize harshest. Thats not necessarily referring to the video, but its certainly relevant to a lot of the comments ive seen.

Magnacut at 61-62 is a no-go.its designed to be run higher hardness and thinner.

Two Hinderer’s bought from you (Eklipse and XM18 3.5), no issues whatsoever and would happily purchase again.

It's good to hear that Hinderer lock tests every knife before they go out the door. Some knife makers/companies don't believe in having locks that lock, or checking for safety. I haven't heard of widespread failure on Hinderers personally. None of the ones I had in the past had lock failure either. However, I do believe that Neeves, whether due to simple bad luck or whatever, has Hinderers that legitimately fail. He's experienced with knives so I doubt reassembly or modification is the reason why his have failure. As long as it's not a widespread issue and Hinderer is willing to fix it when it does happen I don't see it as a big problem. On a side note, I do watch all of Neeves videos and he will call out (without exception) any company running steel on the soft side. Obviously I do too, as you know. I don't believe he is trying to single out RHK. People like Hinderer S45VN and I have personally said it's one of the steels Hinderer does well because at 60-62 it's still quite good. MagnaCut feels lackluster at 60-62 and I can name plenty of US made competition that is running it harder than that. Hogue, Koenig, Chris Reeve Knives, Tactile on the Archer and Maverick, Les George, Protech, and so on. I think it is a fair criticism when US competition (both cheaper and more expensive) are able to achieve the hardness that customers are asking for. Last point, kudos for making this video. When issues arise the best way to address them is to show, not just tell.

I only have one Hinderer knife. It's a 3.5 inch XM18 skinny spanto and I just tried to spine wack it and it failed on the third whack. I've never modified it, brought it brand new and I've owned it a few years. Only used it to cut cardboard and such

I watched said KZfaqrs video last night and immediately got out of bed to check my XM-18 that I just bought in December. No issues. Passed the test without even the slightest doubt. So it kinda makes me wonder if Ja%^d is modifying his in a way that's causing them to fail the spine wack test. IDK. Mine is completely stock factory (bearings), with the steel lock bar insert, and I have added a little KPL to it. And it's screaming sharp. So, idk. I may be a bit biased because this is my first Hinderer and I WANT it to be good. But I really whacked at least a dozen times, and the lock didn't budge. It is what it is at that point. Can't refute the results.

I just checked ever single one of my Hinderers. All purchased from Hinderer dealers and none have been modified in any way. Out of the 6 that I own I had 1 failure. It was my oldest one, XM-18 Skinny 3.5" Tri Way pivot.

Jared said in the video that he was using Hinderer as an example on the hrc, and if you watch his content you will see he complains about low hrc (and bad edge termination) on everyone's knives. Let me ask you; if you had a case full of Hinderer knives that had lock failure, what would your opinion be? You undoubtedly have handled more Hinderers but I certainly don't think he faked the test footage of his knives. Not to mention, I have seen the lock failure complaint from others. I own one Hinderer and it's perfect, though; that's my experience.

I like Hinderer knives, I bought some from USA MB, and I am happy with their performance....they do what they are supposed to do, cut things. Everyone stay safe!

Had mine for about 3 yrs now and it's a 20cv and I tested it and it's all good The only thing is it's a lil soft but I dropped it before and it didn't chip so I'm guessing that's why they run them a lil softer

Who posted the original video of a Hinderer failing?

I've owned 6 Hinderer's now (one is a fixed blade ranch bowie) and 3 of them have had issues. All purchased through an authorized dealer brand new, and my newest, an XM-24 was purchased directly from Hinderer. I will say my XM-24 is the best quality one that I have owned. It is the newest one I have, about a year old from the very first drop of XM-24 bowies. My full track had lock rock, my xm-18 fullered spear has some detent lash (not sure if that's the actual name, but it's the term I've heard). My half track wharnie had some pretty significant lock stick, not enough that it really difficult to disengage, but it definitely took a little more effort. I like Hinderer in general and their designs, but they do have some quality issues in my experience, and I haven't even tried to spine whack any of them. I will say that I sent in my Full Track for warranty work, they fixed the issue, and it was fixed fairly quickly, so I'm happy with the warranty experience. I am now working on getting the xm-18 fullered spear fixed. I don't think I will be buying any more Hinderers in the future, but I will definitely keep my Full Track and XM-24 because I do really like those designs, especially the Full Track. I kind of want a Project X, and maybe another Full Track, but I am just hesitant at this point.

They look like big ol heavy knives. I know some people love them big overbuilt knives and some hate them just like anything else. For those that do like that kind of thing , i think its good to hear the good and the bad and then make an decision before buying especially at what they cost. Buying USA made and using big slabs of material cost big bucks. Its nice to watch videos from several different knife reviewers and then make your own decisions.

except neeves mentioned his project x was brand new and it failed the worst.. and we can't ignore there are other comments saying there's have failed imma guess it's a quality control problem, some are okay but then some aren't.

I personally have never had an issue with lockup, Whitty. I have had some minor discoloration on 2 of my M390/20CV, but it's easily resolved. At the end of the day, these are tools. Tools are gonna be worked. The video in question just wasn't a good one overall and should have been addressed with Hinderer 1st. Love you guys, and I know Rick and team are doing all they can to make good stuff. At the end of the day, you just can't make everyone happy about everything. Keep on being rad, and we'll keep buying nice knives from ya. The Old Man approves! 😄💧💧😄

Personally own 9 Hinderer knives and i dont believe it. In my opinion the only thing the company needs to work on is customer service but only because he's just never been a nice person when ive seen or been around him

The XM18 is 90% perfect. It's so close and could easily be perfect. Most of us are just sad they won't take the steps. Trust me all the 61 hrc knives get mentioned constantly but I don't expect anyone to watch that much content. A video saying, hey if you have failure we'd be glad to take care of it would be awesome.

I've never had a Hinderer come that wasn't sharp. If that is what the guy was doing with the knife, that is not what it is for. And as far as a "hard use" knife goes, I don't want the HRC too high, because I'd rather sharpen more often than have the thing snap. These people constantly whining about wanting a super hard knife obviously don't know what hard use is, or they'd have a collection of broken blades😂

The influencer is just wanting to take advantage of people in yet another way, he says he doesn't want controversy or problems, but knowing damn well he does... he would do anything for a dollar and thats exactly what hes doing, these guys are laughing at people because they throw money at them for ringing a bell.... its a joke, he knows exactly what hes doing... hes even put out the cringiest videos ever of himself modeling clothes, all because they give him a dime... anyway, hes getting what he wants. Spine whacking a frame lock is dumb. Hold the knife as it’s intended when you’re cutting with it. Notice how your hand is wrapped around the lock bar, pinning it in the locked position? You’re welcome. Stop abusing a knife in a way that isn’t intended. And for the fake “tacti-cool operators” who think the blade impacting bone during a fight will disable the lock and that spine whacking tests how it will act? If you’re dumb enough to fight with your folding knife, your hand, wrist and arm will absorb impact strikes and dampen them. Oh and your hand is still wrapped around the lock bar, pinning the lock open. Stop living a fantasy.

My Hinderer XM-18 3.5 came in super dull, and after purchasing the $200 scale and $100 hardware it's my absolute worst knife in my collection! I haven't even tried the spine wack? 😢 MC got me on this horrible knife!?!? 😢😮 THE HRC IS THE WORST IMO

Jerad is a good dude, but I think posting that video before asking Hinderer for comment is a click-bait journalist type move. The classic "hey we're going to run a story on you tomorrow morning, care to comment about it?" the night before, giving you no chance to defend your name. But these creators rely on clicks to get paid, and they resort to creating drama to get them, intentional or not. He may be genuine about not wanting to start controversy, but knows posting that video will do just that. It's mostly sensationalized content and doesn't represent the macrocosm of what's going on in the knife world. Only a fraction of knife buyers even bother to watch YT. They don't care about influencers, they only care about buying knives from makers they trust. If they have a problem with a knife they don't create a video about it and post it on social media. They contact the manufacturer to resolve the issue, like an adult. I've been there and done that. Thanks for doing your due diligence, but Neeves isn't going to put a stop to anybody buying RH knives any time soon. You've clearly demonstrated why. They're built well and are trustworthy. Unless it's some softy who is easily duped into thinking their knife will fail when using it the way it was meant to be used 😆As for HRC, it's a non-issue for the way 90% of knife buyers use their knives, which is to open packages. It just doesn't matter. And they're not sharpening their own knives, either. They're sending it to a sharpening service or the manufacturer. Just a bunch of pointless drama. Keep calm and carry on.

Just because other companies run their steel soft is NOT an excuse for Hinderer to also do the same. These knives are sold at an premium Cost, and with that comes an expectation with a premium product (that goes for any maker). Companies improve over time their equipment their fit and finish machine quality etc. So it's just baffeling and mind blowing to me that they refuse to also improve their heat treatment. Afterall the blade and steel is what does the job, so it should get the same treatment of quality as every other part of the knife. We are talking about folding knives afterall, so proper HRC for the selected steel should be expected when we are talking about premium quality USA made products. And I hope more companies will be willing to step up their game when it comes to heat treatment, to give customers the best they can do. And not just "this will do", other companies slack off so we should do the same.
