Today we look at how we might restart an engine in flight in the A320 family of aircraft! We will discuss why we might restart, and some of the things we will need to do to get it to work.

I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss as well as the new MSFS a320 NEO. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

When I was a kid and you could visit the cockpit, I remember first seeing the airbus with the sidestick and the pilot saying "it won't let me lose control" and here I am about 20 odd years later I finally get what he was on about.

Thanks for this! Extremely useful to know, I had an engine flame out recently and could not restart it no matter what I tried... now I know why. I didn't flick the cross feed switch!

Thanks for the video. You should also include the procedure where the starter assisted relight required (e.g. when one engine fails in obstacle area and the aircraft descends at green dot speed).

Greetings, excellent tutorial on a topic i was looking for a long time. Really liked it. I wanted to know if you would use engine master crank or ignition and seeing what you did got me all clear on that topic. Can you explain what engine master crank does and how its supposed to be used ? Thanks a lot already

Quick question, below 20.000 feet would you always use APU to assist the start or would you first try the x-bleed procedure you demonstrated?

If this was a commercial flight, would it continue to its destination or land early as a safety precaution event if everything works fine after the restart?

Sir, what's the warning that is playing? I was doing a RAT test (for fun) in my Simulation and this warning comes. What's that warning after you attempted to restart the engine?

What do you do afterwards if this happened in real life? Would you still go for an emergency landing even after the engine is restarted, or could you continue to the destination?

Thanks for the video as always! little question, when you failed the other engine, how much you didn't get a beta target on FMA? it didn't look like the aircraft yawed much if at all. Do you get beta target only below a certain altitude where the a-symmetrical trust causes the plane to yaw to one side without the AP being able to compensate for it? sorry for the dumb question :)

What if I have dual enigine out? I've was just doing a ~35min flight at FL180 with a320neo and it was quite cloudy. Got "Icing" warning so I fired Anti-Ice up and was thinking that I'm fine. Well, I was wrong. First, one engine failed and while I was fighting turning it back on - the secound one flamed out. I switched the cam to outside view and was shocked to see the plane covered in ice. Is there actually a way to recover from so much icing and dual engine failure (due to icing)? I now understand how I could of prevented that desaster but I still don't know how I could of saved the plane (since I was already in that situation).

Another great tutorial, thank you! However I am a little puzzled about the need to speed up to 300 knots in the descent if you restart the engine at under 260 knots later? Does it build up inertia in the engine? Or is it that you can start the engine during the 300kt descent without the bleed air?
@tomstravels520
@tomstravels520 3 жыл бұрын
Explained at 4:35 but it’s because 300knots at high altitude will give you as much air as 260 knots at lower due to the density

how do you restart the engine with starter assist?
@tomstravels520
@tomstravels520 3 жыл бұрын
So when would you use the APU to assist? If you had a failure would you start the APU even if it’s short term? I notice it never seems to appear in ECAM actions
@320SimPilot
@320SimPilot 3 жыл бұрын
The APU is not required to assist, we simply use the bleed pressure from the other engine. So it is a 'starter' assist using crossbleed air pressure or more likely windmilling if possible! Starting the APU is a great idea after an engine failure but is not available for start above 25000ft, so you might not have it yet. Also when we start the APU after an engine failure we typically do not use the APU bleed, just the generator. Hope this helps!
@tomstravels520
@tomstravels520 3 жыл бұрын
@@320SimPilot ah I see. I thought the APU was certified to be started at the A320’s maximum operating altitude but maybe it can just run at that altitude but needs to be lower to start

@@320SimPilot correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that 25000ft limitation is for a APU Battery restart limit (elec emer config)...so if the other generator is running, that limitation would not apply, right?

It is very rare these days, but possible. There are lots of possible reasons, all very rare. If you come along to a livestream ask me in the cruise and I will do my best to answer! Thanks for watching.

Can you start a engine in the ground with another engine via crossbleed? In Boeing I know it can be done, but in Aribus never saw this. Or you have to use APU??
@Pr3miuM
@Pr3miuM 3 жыл бұрын
Yes this is possible and without the APU too. You need to increase thrust in order to have sufficient bleed air pressure to start rotating the other engine. Procedure should be pretty much the same as shown here in the air.
@tomstravels520
@tomstravels520 3 жыл бұрын
It only really done if your APU is not working. Use an air starter to start 1 engines and then use crossbreed to start the other but you need to increase thrust partially of the running engine so need to alert ATC before doing so
