Losing weight on levothyroxine, is it possible? You bet. Here's why your levothyroxine is not helping with weight loss and how to fix it.
Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed medication for treating low thyroid or hypothyroidism.
One of the most common symptoms associated with low thyroid function is WEIGHT GAIN. You might think that treating your thyroid using thyroid medication would cause you to lose weight but that isn't always the case and this video explains why that is.
It makes sense that increasing your thyroid hormone should cause weight loss, especially if the opposite leads to weight gain.
So if levothyroxine isn't helping you with weight loss the question is why not? Here are a few reasons why this may be the case:
#1. Is it the right medication for you?
There are many different thyroid medications available on the market and they are not all created equal. Levothyroxine may simply not be the best medication for your body.
#2. Have you waited long enough?
Even if levothyroxine is the right medication for you, have you given it enough time to kick in and to work?
It takes roughly 4-6 weeks to see any change once you make changes to your thyroid medication dose!
#3. Are you taking enough?
While levothyroxine may be the right medication for you, you have to make sure that you are taking enough.
It won't provide any benefit to you if your dose is simply too low.
#4. Is it getting into your system?
And lastly, you have to make sure that the medication you are taking is getting into your system. Believe it or not, people take their thyroid medication incorrectly which leads to decreased absorption in the gut.
When it comes down to it, levothyroxine just isn't always the best option for weight loss. Other thyroid medications, especially those that contain T3 thyroid hormone are often much more effective of that purpose. These medications include things like Armour thyroid, other formulations of NDT, and even T3 only thyroid medications.
If you aren't sure what to do next I've created a list of people who tend to do the BEST on levothyroxine. People in this category include those who are:
- Treatment naive
- Sensitive to T3 and/or NDT medications
- Sensitive to medications and supplements in general
- Have few if any chronic illnesses
- Have seen some improvement on levothyroxine within a short period of time (usually between 4-8 weeks)
Are you using levothyroxine? Is it helping you with weight loss? Let me know below!

I was diagnosed in 1997 with an underactive thyroid. All these years I cannot remember a time that I have not been tired. I have battled my weight. I go to bed tired. I wake up tired. And yet the doctor says my levels are good. Good for who? I really don't think they care. Chronic fatigue is a way of life. Not sleeping good compounds everything. They. Do. Not. Care.

Not true. I've been on it for years. There was a 2 yr period when it wasn't available because big pharma was challenging it's use and I had to use synthetic. I felt like crap it was almost like not having any at all. I almost cried when I got it back. The weight loss effect did not last hypothetically but I gained about 40 pounds back on synthetic and lost it again when I switched back. I guess I would say there was a weight loss cap but the cure for all the other ailments continues to last.

My weight has increased and my BMI is 34. I feel dizzy and breathless all the time and am now being treated for anxiety and I am given Venalfaxine for this. I may lose my flat because of how I feel as I keep going home to my mother and the stress of losing my home is making things worse. I take Levothyroxine in the morning and Venalfaxine at night. I've read some of the comments and realise that they are new patients to thyroxin. That is great because they are being educated on the meds prescribed to them. I've been on Levothyroxine for 27 years. When I started I was 7 1/2 stone the dose was 50mg. Now I am on 100 mg and have been for 20 years. My weight has blossomed to 10.7 stones and counting. I've never heard of T4 or T3 or know what my level is or what it should be. But I will speak to my Dr during my next appointment about this as my health has changed substantially since I first started to take Levothyroxine so maybe a change would be beneficial. Wish me luck!

You are helping me to see that there is some hope! I have always been fit and lean but due to genetics I had to start taking BP meds, (BP meds, as I have learned from your videos can inhibit proper production of Thyroid hormones). Sure enough, two years later, I needed to start thyroid medication and have been gaining weight ever since. I have been on 75mcg Levothyroxine for 4 years now and struggling to lose weight! You have provided me some useful information that I can now discuss with my Dr. next week and hopefully turn this around. Thanks.

You might be eating too little and exercising too much. You need adequate calories and protein for your body to function and adequate rest between days of exercise for body recovery. Less cardio more weights add 20 min of HIIT 2x week, decrease stress and increase sleep quality as Cortisol affects weight and high stress and/or poor sleep increases cortisol.

Hi Robin, I'm really struggling right now having had to switch from WP Thyroid due to the recall, and their company just sucks in general. I'm considering adding cytomel to my compounded thyroid medicine. I had my thyroid removed and it's been a nightmare, especially since RLC labs can't get their shit together. Did you have any side effect with cytomel? Thanks so much in advance!

I have been taking it for 10 months after having my thyroid removed due to cancer. I have gained about 15 pounds. It’s super frustrating because about 3 years before I lost 70 lbs. I work really hard to keep that weight off. Now I see it slowly creeping back and I’m stricter than ever with the food I put in my body, as well as moving my body. I am excited for the video about “how” to take it...I take mine with coffee. I was told to take it at the same time each day, but that was about it.

I do NOT wake up at the same time every morning, but I AM awake at 630pm every day, and I don't eat around that time, so that when I take mine. Hi Dr Childs, somewhere in one of your videos (maybe this one) you mention the life or half life of thyroxine in the body and how it can last a week in your body...something like that. Why then does it matter so much what time of day that you take your thyroxine? I was taking it in the morning but decided to switch it up after you said that some people absorb it better when they take it at night. Since it doesn't appear to have an immediate effect given you say it lasts in your body for ages then why does this matter? Just curious. :-)

I thought Armour would be good because it was more natural, however; they reformulated and I've heard a lot of side effects, and experienced them myself (such as heart palpitations and yes my levels are in the right spot). Not saying I like being on Levo but we have been trying for a second child while I've been on Armour. I've decided to switch to Levo because that's how I got pregnant the first time. Plus, after doing my research, it sounds like armour has gluten in it which is crazy to me because that's usually a major trigger for Hashimoto's patients.

I have since been lowered quite a bit over the last 8 years, so now taking, .75 mcg.. and have to get my thyroid panel done this week.. I've been telling my doctor that this is not a supplement but rather a total replacement.. they've been telling me that I've had it backwards my whole life, that I shouldn't be taking so much, hence the lowering about every 6 months.. I have started to gain some weight, on this new dose.. actually.. I am 5ft tall and currently 114 lbs.. which for me, seems a bit too much weight for my body/bone structure. Interesting..

My testosterone and estrogen were in range. My progesterone was high, and my Free Thyroxine was low. I also had a pituitary tumor which caused Cushing's and I had it removed last year and lost 30 lbs. without changing a thing. I also have a goiter and a few cysts, and one is questionable. Right now, I'm waiting to have a biopsy and I do have neck pain in that area on and off. I also hear clicking sometimes, when I drink liquids. I haven't filled my prescription yet and would rather wait on the results from my biopsy once I have it done. $140 for 30 capsules of 112 mcg Levo sounds high.

I normally am afraid now to take my levothyroxine daily, because of great sensitivity to hyper thyroid symptoms, I've been told I had hashimotos, I have a huge Lipoma in my neck near the thyroid area, and used to have a goiter, its weird, my doctors was a total prick, he pushed and pushed synthroid after I told him I could not tolerate it, and prefered levothyroxine, but he made it near impossible for me to get refills for levoT until I found a nurse practitioner who was really cool, and I told her I think your clinic is trying to kill me intentionally, she went behind the doctors back and secretly filled LevoT about 25 mg less than the synthroid dose the doctors was pushing and finally my TSH came into range. For 8 years my TSH has been in constant YO YO cycles, Doctors are total Dick heads they could care less what patients say, they are always right, and screw you if you start to sweat at night, poop three times a day, can't sleep, and start having anxiety and hyper speech.

I have been on levothyroxine for nearly 60 year. What I took as a child,I took Armour. I was on 137 mcg for 40 years .When I hit 50,it dropped to 125 mcg. Now pushing 60 it is about 100 mcg.Ive been on it long enough to know when it is out of whack. If you are taking it to get just the weight off....you have a problem. If you have a problem and they find its your thyroid. When things get back to normal you will start losing the excess weight. With some work from yourself. As for me personally, I have never taken it like they say or suggest. I do what works for me.

I will look for that other video you mentioned and hope you made it, Because I definitely take it first thing in the morning, because I thought that was what I was supposed to be doing. Mine literally says to take on an empty stomach. Preferably 1/2 to 1 hour before breakfast.

I’ve been on it for 35 years and my weight has gradually increased. Since menopause it’s going up by ten pounds a year no matter what I do.

I don’t have a thyroid, complete thyroidectomy in 2009. My thyroid gland became a massive intra-thoracic goiter (grapefruit size) in my chest. I started with levothyroxine when diagnosed with a thyroid problem in 2004. Goiter was found in 2009 and was compressing the aorta and collapsing my trachea… a complete thyroidectomy was necessary. At the time of surgery, I was talking Armour. Continued with Armour or Natur-thyroid for 4 to 5years. My negative experience after the surgery… was a completely suppressed TSH, a lot of hair loss, occasional heart palpitations and a ravenous appetite. The upside, I felt like I had more energy. Eventually switched over to a Levothyroxine and liothyronine combo. As I’ve gotten older (post menopausal now) I began to tolerate the liothyronine less and less. Experienced more heart palpitations, more hair loss and still a ravenous appetite, fatigue and a nearly suppressed TSH. Reduced the liothyronine, symptoms persisted. Was recently just switched over to Levothyroxine alone and will see what’s what in 5 weeks. Fingers crossed things will level out. Just wanted to share my T4 / T3 journey.

I switched to Armour from levothyroxine, which caused weight gain, bloating and tiredness, even though I took a higher dose than I now take with Armour.

Hello Doctor, I have been taking Tirosint 25 mg for one year now, but the doctor that prescribed it to me didn’t do an accurate visit, didn’t even asked me about my syntomps! So.. I have gained 5 kgs… that is so strange to me because I have always been skinny despite of having hypothyroidism … what could be the cause in your opinion?

I'm watching your video because I've actually gained 10ibls since starting this medication. I recently got my thyroid levels checked though and after three months of taking it, my thyroid is back to normal levels. I'm hoping I'll lose the weight Ive gained because I can't afford a new wardrobe!

I am 74, and I have been on levothyroxine 112 for as long as I can remember, Last thyroid test my T3 was very low, my Dr did not change my medication. \, I asked to be put on Armour 3 weeks ago. But Blue Cross won't cover it, because it's not FDA-approved. Do you know if Cytamel would be better? I will go for my blood test in a month for thyroid, to see if the Armour is working. I also have a very unbalanced-shaped thyroid gland (very small on one side and regular size on the other side), and just found this out 6 months ago after a scan. I have struggled with weight loss for many years.

I've lost like 10% of my body fat weight in a year on Levotheroxine. I'm super sensitive to medications. When I started the Levotheroxine, I didn't know I would lose weight. My mental health was at its lowest, like I didn't want to be on this planet anymore, so my doctor tested my thyroid cuz she been looking into how the thyroid effects mental health. So Yea I didn't even know the part about losing weight, I just wanted my deep depression treated. It helped me so much, I just couldn't believe how much better mentally, emotionally, and physically I would be after this last year.

That’s amazing! I wish I had this experience. I feel no difference on it. I actually stopped taking it for a year because of a move and insurance difficulties. I felt no change. My doctor chastised me and made sure I knew to take it every day. I do, and have for years, but it’s discouraging when I don’t experience any change, good or bad. It’s good to see that it actually makes some people feel better!❤🙏

I had a struggle getting the right dosage on synthetic thyroid medication, felt awful and my eyebrows thinned out until they were half gone. A friend mentioned Armour Thyroid and it has made a world of difference. Insurance does not want to pay for it, but it's worth it. My older brother gained a massive amount of weight on synthetic medication and could never lose it. He was very cheap and would not try Armour Thyroid because it cost more. His weight eventually led to a premature death.
