Restless Leg Syndrome - My BREAKTHROUGH, worth a try? | Multiple Sclerosis

For several months now I've been dealing with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Every evening without fail, my left leg feels as though it's charged up, then it starts twitching and jerking violently several times a minute. This continues for several hours and it's very distressing!
However, I've recently discovered by taking Magnesium before tea has put a stop to this, at least for the time being.
So I wanted to share my discovery just in case it can help anybody else.

I've monitored my Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium for years. However, within the last couple of months, I started experiencing RLS on a regular basis. After doing some research, I realized I was neglecting another key electrolyte...Calcium. So I now monitor my Calcium intake (via food, not supplements) and my Iron intake (via food, not supplements) and had immediate and dramatic improvement. Definitely worth a try before resorting to prescriptions. Moral of the story, ensure you are getting ALL key electrolytes.

Hello Jean, thank you for letting me know this tremendous news 😃. I’m so thrilled for you, it must be amazing for you to have no more restless legs. Since making this video I actually stopped taking the magnesium for a while and my leg spasms returned somewhat violently. I’ve recently started taking the magnesium again, and I’ve not had a nightly leg spasm in what must be months now. I’m so happy for you, thank you so much for letting me know. 💛🙏

Hey Neil , isn’t it the best feeling in the world when you finally find something that helps 😊. I’m so pleased the magnesium is helping you and the best bit is it’s a supplement and not another medication with harmful side effects 😃☺️. I might start taking some myself (I used to take magnesium years ago but stopped). I didn’t realise you were not taking anything at the moment, I thought you were taking Pregabalin & diazepam on days when you were really struggling ?? Fingers crossed you get to see the professor soon Keep going , take care of yourself, hi to Teresa , love Grace x 👍 Ps) loved seeing all the birds & squirrels in the video 🐿

Hi Grace, I've been on Pregabalin since 2012.. recently a couple of months ago I kept forgetting to take it and noticed no difference so I stopped. Then once it was out of my system, as an experiment I took it again for a few days and noticed a significant decline in my mobility so I stopped completely. Since taking the Magnesium this last week I've still had two evenings where the leg twitching started up again, but it's not like every night for months on end. Time will tell I suppose. I don't take the Diazepam very often at all, but it's there as backup if I feel the need. Glad you enjoyed the video, I really enjoyed building in some of the footage I've taken of the birds/squirrel over the last few months.

I had restless leg syndrome. What I found that worked for me was to not eat sugar and to try and rid the body of unnecessary chemical exposure- this includes not eating foods that contain additives/chemicals. Sticking to a diet of fresh veggies and fruits (no sugar!) is what took care of it for me. Magnesium and ibuprofen helped too. Making sure one is well hydrated. Vitamin d supplement has never done anything for me, nor has most supplements, but everyone is different. Magnesium helps a lot. Epsom salt soaks (you get magnesium from doing this through your skin) in the bath help as well- and if not a full bath, then just a foot soak. Love the bird video montages. Lovely!

Hi there, and thank you for your message. So pleased you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I treat sugar like poison, my wife is diabetic so it’s important. We’ve practically eradicated it from our diet. We eat a lot of fresh veg which we steam for tea in the evening. Not a big fan of fruit myself but I eat some. I’ve tried magnesium, and for a while it worked with the leg spasms, but after a week or so they returned. I now take Diazepam every other day and it seems to be keeping them at bay, on the whole. I still get the odd violent jerk which will launch me from wherever I’m sitting, but it’s much improved. The problem is the body builds up a tolerances to Diazepam quickly, and that’s how it becomes addictive. So I’m being extremely careful. Take care.

I use amitriptyline because I am hypersensitive to medication it knocks me out. All the symptoms you have described I have, but I think the doctors aren't listening because I haven't got the weakness in my legs and hands yet. However I feel that my weakness is in my middle back. The more I watch you the more it hits home. At the moment my side pains and shoulder blade pains are the worst. Watching you both is giving me the courage again to see my gp again. Take care to you both xx

There are muscles that run up either side of your spinal cord, they are called "erector spinae muscles" they are responsible for balance and keeping us upright! It might be worth doing a little research on this is you feel weakness coming into your middle back. I know for me, a lot of my problems stem from here. You take care also. xxx

Hi Neil. You look wonderful, I,'m so glad..just to share, when I stopped taking Gabapentin( also a gaba drug) I learned there is actually a withdrawl period (though doctors don't tell you that!) ..that withdrawl is due to a magnesium deficiency (!) that takes quite a while to replenish. The best I have found is Magnesium Taurate which binds mag to taurine. Taurine is an amino acid that helps calm the brain so the combo is wonderful. No rx is needed, it is at any health food store. Really helps sleep too. Also, calcium might prevent the mag from working as well since it stimulates nerves vs calming them like the mag..you might want to space them out to see how you do..much love to you both from Florida..

Hi Patricia, thank you very much for that information.. I very much appreciate it. The combination of Calcium and Magnesium I was using only seemed to work for about 3 - 4 days if memory serves. I honestly thought at the time I 'd had a bit of a break through as this twitching leg things was driving me INSANE (and still does) so wanted to share with others. Once again, thanks for the info. Best to you and much love from the UK :)

Dear Teresa, dear Neil, I am so glad for you Neil that you found sonething to help with the RLS!!!! So glad and wishing you more relief! I am taking 175 mg Pregabalin in the morning and 175 mg at night and it is helping with the neuropathic pain! I increased the dosage myself, cause I was is so much pain. Now I am better, it is still not "good" so to say, but it is better. Wishing you fun with birds and nature in your wonderful garden! Thinking of you, best regards Britta

Hi Britta, I’ve recently stopped Pregabalin because I’ve found it effects my mobility terribly. It essentially turns down the “power” which helps with the nerve pain but worsens my mobility. Truly a double edged sword. I’m glad that it’s helping you with the pain.

Thanks Avril, yes I’m off everything. I discovered by going back to the drawing board as it were, a clean slate (no drugs) that the Pregabalin actually worsens mobility. It’s the nature of these particular type of drugs, they turn down the power as it were so the muscles etc don’t work so well but the pain lessons. Double edged sword. I need all the mobility I can get at the moment as rapidly deteriorating.

That's a good thing you've found and at one stage I used to take magnesium but I didn't have jumpy leg then but I stopped so worth a thought. I see my MS nurse about the 25th of this month and I'm seriously thinking about giving up my Aubagio modifying drug as I think my mobility has actually got worse since I've been on it. I used to be on pegabilin for years and didn't think it was making any difference so I went right the way up to the top dose and no change so gave it up and didn't even notice any change at all so all those years taking it what a waste. Same as had daily injections of copaxone and all that did was gave me site inflammation and itching and started to dip my flesh so that went. I'm just so fed up with drugs and I take so many its ridiculous I can't wait to have my nerve blocks for my back July 4th then unless a emergency comes in the next day the 5th I'm back in for gallbladder surgery got a bit going on at the moment and think my heads going to explode!! Take care my friend.

Blimey Adrian, you sure do have a bit going on at the moment! I hope the nerve block goes smoothly and you get some relief. I’d been on Pregabalin since 2012, recently kept forgetting to take it and noticed no difference so stopped. Haven’t taken it now for a good couple of months. It used to help with the burning legs or so I thought.. but even when I was on it I got the nerve pain. Happy that I’ve ditched it and won’t be going back on it. I was also on Copaxone! For two years, until (like you) I couldn’t take the injection site reactions any longer. They really hurt, swelled up like golf balls size lumps. Crazy. Gall bladder surgery as well, wow thoughts are with you. Take care Adrian.

I know this is a month old video but I thought I would let you know that I think the reason the calcium is mixed with the Magnesium is because the calcium helps to aide your body in absorbing the Magnesium. Also I don't know if it is available in the UK but here in the U.S. we have epsom salts for baths and also there is an Epsom salt/magnesium lotion which works in much the same way. I use the lotion at night when I am going to bed. Sometimes I can't lay still to save my life but since I started taking magnesium and sometimes using the epsom salts lotion I haven't had a problem. Hope you are still able to get good results with the magnesium supplements. Good day.

Hi Sue, thanks. I grabbed a load of forage I’d previously shot over the last few months and including it as background in the video. My initial MRI back in 2012/2013 did show lesions in my Cervical (Neck) and Thoracic (I was diagnosed with MS in 2013). None in my brain. More recent scans at the end of last year reveal no lesions at all what so ever. Both my brain and entire spinal cord are clear. This is why I’m being sent to a professor for a second opinion, meanwhile my hospital won’t treat me!.

Thanks Patty, it’s funny isn’t it what triggers the leg. For me it’s when I become lethargic, usually after tea. It has been kind of weird anticipating it but it not happening. For me it’s not easy on no meds, the pain in my legs is often off the scale. But the trade off is I can walk a bit still, as you can see in the video. The nerve pain killing meds slow down my Central nervous system and make my walking even worse.

Hi Kim, balance is just terrible. I was out pottering in the garden this morning and I “forgot” I wasn’t able to turn on the spot very well (180 degrees) and pretty much fell to the floor, my hands saved me though. My vision has never returned to what it used to be, it gets really bad at times which is scary but then it improves. Hi Lorien, I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with PLMD and RLS. Do you find the CBD/THC helps? I can purchase the CBD in the UK but not with THC in it as it's not legal, unfortunately it doesn't seem to help me. But I think it's the THC that's makes all the difference to be honest, I haven't tried it though.. I'm just going on what people have told me. For months I've had the RLS always at night, then all of a sudden after taking Magnesium it stopped for a few days. I have had it again (the twitchy leg) since taking the Magnesium as well recently, but it's the first time anything has made a difference. We have to experiment with different things to see what works best I think.

Hi Neil & Teresa, I'm so pleased your off medication, I counted my meds with painkillers too and its about 27 pills a day I'm literally rattling but I dont feel any different, I stopped Pregabalin for afew months but felt abit jittery and the pain got worse so Ive started them again on full dose and must admit the dizziness went away. I'm having loads of probs with my eyes and slept for 2days solid cos I felt so exhausted and part of that thing us women get every month *the curse* 😂🤣 well its flippin knocking me out every month I'm like a sack of spuds I even fall asleep while people are talking to me or I'll wake up suddenly and shout a word of sentence out Dave kate & my mum are buzzing off me 😂 I have to keep checking my writing because I can't feel my fingers and I feel like Ash from the Evil Dead film were his hand wont do what he wants, I poked myself in the eye yesterday and about 10mins later I did it again, omg I had a cup of tea that my mum made and as we sat down I had a spasm in my and and I was like lightening cos I threw it halfway across the room Haha I'm using 2 hands now cos I poured it over myself yesterday, all over my neck chin and knees, I looked so attractive walking like the hunchback to get a towel and my 4 cats all followed me so I picked up Mia, the mother and she was so lovely purring her head off clinging to me and rubbing her head on me, my cats are psycho & I stupidly gave her a kiss which she loves but its scary for us! The bitch bit bloody nose and she only has one fang so omg it makes ya eyes water and she does it out of love but jeeez why my nose lol Back to meds cos I went off topic lol I was diagnosed with Restless leg syndrome about 3 yrs ago and no joke I even told my consultant this but the pain of the spasm and the toes and muscle going into spasm/cramp was so bad that I was jamming my foot into doorways and pressing till it hurt cos that took over for afew mins buy then I'd get it back so I bought a lump hammer and I sit and bang hell out the muscles in my ,legs, looks bloody crazy but while I'm whacking my legs it takes my mind off the twisting pain in my feet and knees. The consultant for RLS gave me.....Avorvastatin 20mg 1 a day and Carbamazepine 200mg slow release 4 a day but I'm also on Amitriptyline, propranolol, Zapain, Clonazepam, Sertraline, Ropinarole, omeprazole, ibuprofen, Pregabalin Metformin, Senna, salifix and Rebif injections 3 times a week AND I dont feel any bloody different cos apparently I should be like a zombie 😂🤣🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️ I've just counted its 36 pills a day and my nurse said I need them all and the consultant. Anyway I'm goin to make a cuppa oh and 6hrs I've had these headphones and on and didnt play anything, I'm such a div I dunno why I keep doin it 😂🤣 Talk soon say bye to Teresa for me 😊 I'll let ya know how I get on with these vitimins and thanks for the info Neil your a star Byeeeeeeeee 😘😘 xxx

Hi Sue, wow you are indeed on a lot of medication! The reason you may well have felt jittery when you stopped the Pregabalin is, you're not meant to stop these type drugs quickly. You're meant to taper them off otherwise you can have some nasty withdrawal effects. Your cat bit your nose!! I'm not smiling honest :) I once saw a program about RLS and this guy was doing exactly the same as you by trapping his feet in the doors in the middle of the night. Because, the pain he inflicted upon himself kind of numb the RLS pain albeit briefly. But Sue, buy the sound of it your taking this to new levels, a lump hammer!! It's nice to hear from you, and that on the whole you're ok.. as long as you don't upgrade to a sledge hammer!! Take care, Neil & Teresa. xx

Sure Mike, give it a go and post back on here with how you get on. I have to admit since making the video, my leg has started twitching again I’m sorry to report. But I had about four days of relief from it, and prior to that it would do it every night for months. So I feel the magnesium is significant. I’m thinking of upping the dose.

You can at least walk. I wish I could.
@NeilBradleyMS
@NeilBradleyMS 4 жыл бұрын
Bless you, I sincerely wish you could walk too. Yes at the moment I can walk, but there are times I can’t. More recent videos you will see my wife has to push me in a wheel chair to my appointments because I literally can barely stand. Steroid treatment tends to help me a lot, then I seem to regain some balance and I’m able to walk a bit again. I always say to people it may look easy (walking) but it’s still massively difficult and takes a lot of concentration. I really wish for you to regain some balance and control too, which would ultimately lead to a little better walking. I do know what it’s like, and how depressed it makes you feel. 💞
