Restoration & Knife Sheath: Vintage Puma White Hunter Leather Work ASMR

I recently acquired this vintage German-made Puma "White Hunter" knife in a trade. It was a little beat up, so I gave it a light restoration (I could have taken it to my grinder, but didn't want to lose the blade markings.) Then I made a new leather sheath for it. Any questions about what I'm doing in the video please ask in the comments section and I'll do my best to respond.
My laser is the xTool D1. This is a good budget-friendly machine for leathercraft.
Stamps I used on this sheath:
SOZO LX2 Geometrics Diamond Lined Pattern Stamp
Barry King - #2 Barker / Veiner Stamp
Although they didn't sponsor this video, below are the links to save my viewers a few bucks on purchasing the D1 direct from xTool (use code XTCUT80):

I buy my Wiht Hunter in '73, but with wood handle. During Covid I refresh the blade and changed the handle in horn. Wonderfull

This was the first sheath knife I bought when I joined the British Army in 1974, I still own it to this day. .nothing special about the sheath it 😂was all about the knife when I saw it in the store in Scotland. Bought many others over the decades but this one was special to me.💂‍♂️🪖⛑️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇨🇦

Wow! I've had a Puma White Hunter since I was a kid, some 55 years ago! Your video has given me some good ideas on how to upgrade the sheath. The sheath is the original and is getting very brittle and quite dirty. I have used the knife in the field for a long time and the bone handle has a few chunks out of it. Thanks for the video!

Sick project. I've got a few questions: - In some of your other projects, you use an aussie conditioner while here you use resolene. What determines when you seal it and when you only condition it? - How is your experience with the wuta tools? they are pretty cheap on the website, but I'm a little skeptical about the quality - what are the pads you use for dying? Thanks

Thanks! As you can see in the beginning, the blade was pretty beat up. I have no idea what someone in the past was hacking at (I'm guessing it was made in the 1950s by the markings). It was butter-knife dull. I was trying not to completely re-profile the edge by taking off too much.

Always a pleasure. Do you think the Resolene when airbrushing? What do you use to clean the airbrush after use? I only use mine for dye work and clean with alcohol. Would like to try some of the top coats with it. Why did you use it this time instead of a wipe on method?
@edgell3
@edgell3 6 ай бұрын
I also use Resolene through an airbrush. In fact I have a dedicated airbrush and bottle for the process. Resolene is a water based product. Dilute the Resolene 50/50 with water and adjust the airbrush pressure to produce a fine even mist. Apply two or more coats as desired, allow to dry between coats. Five to ten minutes should do. Clean with an 80/20 ratio of denatured alcohol with water. You may want to breakdown the airbrush and give it through cleaning as you feel necessary. Hope this helps.😎

@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's a technique I learned a long time ago. The soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. This makes for better stamp impressions. It also helps a swivel knife glide through the leather better (though I didn't use one in this video). It also slows the drying process some so you don't have to rewet as often.

What is the name of that star looking rivet you put in just above the grommet?
@RoadAgentLeather
@RoadAgentLeather 4 ай бұрын
Hello! That is a tubular rivet. The star is referred to as the "splash". I purchase them from Tandy Leather. They're very strong and are handy for locations that would be difficult to sew in or use "standard" rivets. You need a setter to install them properly. There is an inexpensive hand setter, but it only works on the very shortest rivets. Otherwise, you need a press and a set of dies.

@@RoadAgentLeather I figured it did a bit, but didn't know how deep it goes. I've done some experimenting with a torch and seeing if I could get an edge to slick better, and it's a very fine line. But I also have used the same technique to create a harder surface on the edge of an axe pouch (logging style). I don't think it really made a better product, but it's still holding up.
