Restoration Rusty Rapier

Hello folks! Today I want to show a new restoration! I found this broken old rusty rapier at a flea market (now you know what they look like). I have not restored the swords up to this point, and it will be interesting for me and for you. Well, let's proceed to the restoration.

My first duty was to take the handle apart. I put the steel parts in the rust removal liquid. After washing, dried and applied a layer of anti-rust. The remnants of paint and patina were removed with a wire iron brush. It makes no sense to restore a broken blade because the object is hardened, and to make a tempered, then re-brew it with electric welding will not work, there will be no flexibility and elasticity. That's why my friend helped me out. He just sent it to me (he gave it to me because he didn't need it).
The surface was sanded with sandpaper. Then I cleaned the surface with a solvent and applied a primer in two layers. Then I applied light blue paint. I chose dark blue as the main color, due to the lack of nickel plating. I cleaned the wooden handle from dirt and dust.
The surface of the handle was carved. I went through all the places with the handmade chisel as much as possible to restore the surface as much as possible. It was difficult because the tree has aged a lot and has become soft. To strengthen it, I applied a primer after the woodwork, and then painted it with a colorless varnish to protect the surface.
I washed the rubber washer well and oiled it so that the rubber does not dry out. I ground the nut at the end of the handle. Furthermore, I added the missing part to the handle, but I took it from the bearing.

Just so you know, that hilt (the part that isn't the blade) is for a fencing sabre. A rapier is a different weapon, and not used in sport fencing.

@@DrJuice1 the original blade was likely an épée, the replacement is a fencing saber. There are three forms in modern fencing; foil, épée, and saber

Hello, thank you for your attention. Lately, I have rarely used electrolysis, because it takes a long time, more dirt and fumes. I use electrolysis as a last resort if there is a very thick old rust. My tool does everything faster and effortlessly)

Вам не стоит переживать на счёт пескоструя,я не могу говорить насколько он лучше,однако его использование однозначно упрощает реставрацию.Не смотря на это ваш процесс уже выглядит как родной,и чем больше смотришь тем приятнее предугадывать действия,одно за другим,как буд-то становишься частью команды которая кропотливо и до мелочей знает всё о своём деле.

Кстати да, когда он замачивать в этой жидкости мне очень нравится!!! И когда я смотрю как другие например подключают ток и тд., всегда думаю а вот с жидкостью было бы эффективней и вспоминаю нашего мастера!!!

Hi! Thanks for attention. Well, it is possible to make a chisel or if high hardness is a tool for working with non-ferrous metal by type of engraving. And you can, as I understood from the information from the comments, the issue was before 1956.

Of course I could create a new handle, but such handles are very rare. Everything is rubberized now and there are no villages left. Besides, I always try to keep all the previous details as much as possible. And then they write me a lot of unpleasant things, why I threw this or that out. Thanks for attention.

Nice surgical pliers! Still from flea market? Regarding sabre, I tought you would have come with a ussr redstar on white or steelguard, but being training sword, nice paintjob! Finally, being a sporting sabre, that point is strange, and however, it's intended for slashing. Cheers from an italian very amateur fencer!

The point is meant to go under a fencing button/electrical tip. You can see at 10:12 the channel for the electrical cable. Electrical blades do not end in a blunt button because it wouldn't fit inside the electrical tip. (The s2000 blade is offered in both electrical and classic versions - he got the electric one).

@@ScrewsAndTools Yes, it is a fencing saber - just that modern fencing uses electrical equipment to track the hits. I own only ONE pre-electrical fencing swword - the foil of my wife's grandfather, who was a regional foil champion in the early 1950s. But about everything from 1956 onwards is electric.

I was lost in guesses and searched for information for two days. there were 3 search options: rapier, sword and saber. A rapier fits the length of the blade itself. Thank you for attention!

This is indeed a fencing blade, not a combat one, but the s2000 (88 cm, V-shaped base which transitions to a flat rectangular section with no taper) is a saber blade. An epee blade would be a bit longer (90 cm) and heavier, and would have a D section (one side flat, the other curved) tapering towards the end.

That weapon is an epee, not a rapier, because rapiers have a cutting edge. Blade you have can be used only for stabbing, which makes it an epee

Несколько замечаний, если позволите. Это не рапира, это спортивная сабля. Старая, советского образца, ориентировочно середины прошлого века. Гарда стальная, со звездой - позже стали делать алюминиевые. Хорошая гарда, стойкая, но уж больно звонкая :). Клинок был сабельный, тоже старого образца: трапецеидальный в сечении. Скорее всего производства фабрики Восток. Посмотрите, там должно быть клеймо. Место облома не характерно: сабли обычно ломались либо ближе к кончику, где клинок совсем тоненький, либо (чаще) отламывался хвостовик. Если хвостовик цел, как у Вас - из обломка можно сделать симпатичный стилет ;). Деревянная рукоятка - пожалуй, самое ценное в этом экземпляре. Спасибо, что спасли, таких почти не осталось. Сейчас делают пластиковые обрезиненные. Теперь замечания. Гарду неплохо было бы немного отрихтовать: дужка мятая, и это заметно. Там должна быть плавная дуга, без углов и заломов. Красить гарду - отстой. Их никогда не красили, так как в первом же поединке краска облупится и будет потом осыпаться долго, засирая дорожку. Да даже если на ковер: извините, но вид получился игрушечный. Лучше было бы ее полирнуть. Ручку лаком зря. В потной руке будет скользить, а к кожаной перчатке - прилипать. Лучше было бы пропитать ее маслом. Удачи!
