I found this when were moving out of our old shop and into the new one. It's my grandfather's old hatchet that was sitting back by all of the gardening equipment. The handle was about to fall off and the stand/holder thing seemed kinda janky to me.

Recently I also restored a hatchet that belonged to my grandfather, and later to my father. It's a great emotion. Congratulations from Brazil!

This is an old school framing hatchet, as opposed to an axe. The "nog" is for pulling nails, axes don't have these nogs. We used these hatchets in place of hammers, up until the early 80's. Also similar to roofing hatchets, which would add holes along the top straight edge for shingle spacers.

Great job. A few things I really liked about this resto and one tool suggestion. I like that you took the time on a hatchet that was born to be a cheap workhorse in somebody's garage. I like that you didn't give it a mirror polish, but instead gave it a good looking, practical finish. I like that you didn't feel pressured to cut and shape your own handle, there's nothing wrong with a store-bought handle, and you spiffed it up nice and correct. My suggestion is on the removal of the finish that came on it: a card scraper would make short work of that instead of sandpaper. Once again, great job, I really enjoyed this.

Despite the many mentions of this tool being an axe, I still possess a near identical tool that I inherited from my father, who was a builder and roofer for most of his life. He always called it his slating hammer and when I once offered to put a sharp edge on the blade, he told me to never sharpen it, as it was supposed to be a rounded edge and be used to create assorted shapes and sizes from plain rectangular stone roofing slates as required for decorative patterns on roofs. He would use the same tool for different types of slates from the usual Welsh blue slates and the Cumberland green slates to the older more locally sourced Riven Yorkshire Sandstone slabs and even occasionally he worked with Cornish random slates (which he always described as a miserable flaky stone to work with).

If you bought an axe in 1903, replace the head in 1906, then the handle breaks in 1913 and is replaced, do you still have the same axe from 1903? Deep thoughts...

@@Ice_Berg hmm I’ve seen them called drywall hammers - they’re obviously not used anymore, but in the 1960s and earlier they were common.
@MrPendell
@MrPendell 2 жыл бұрын
I believe this particular design predates drywall, and was originally used for installing wooden lath which went under plaster in older construction, but drywall hammers are a direct descendant of these, and I’m sure these were widely used on drywall for many years. They started to go out of use with the advent of the superior technology of drywall screws, and since the advent of good affordable cordless drivers pretty much nobody nails drywall anymore.
