Restore a Missing Minecraft World (Java Edition)

2 жыл бұрынEven though it totally shouldn´t it sometime happens that Minecraft worlds in the Java Edition of the game all of a sudden disappear from the launcher. They are however usually not actually gone. Instead this indicates that the world file is somehow corrupt (broken).
Here I´m showcasing two of the most common ways of restoring a lost Minecraft world. Please write any questions down in the comments and I´ll do my best to help. Also not that this only applies to the Java Edition of the game (for Windows/macOS/Linux).

@@Amirvona Hm, if everything has been deleted from the computer the only way to get any files back is probably to do a search with some kind of recovery software, like Recuva ( www.ccleaner.com/recuva ). Hopefully the files are still recoverable, at least to point where you can find the seed and recreate the world. // Chris

This did indeed work! My lost world showed up on the list, but the problem is that when I want to play on it, the whole game stops responding, to the point where even Java(TM) Platform SE binary stops responding, and it asks you if you want to close the program or you want to wait for it to respond. This is happening while having the "Reading world data..." screen, is there a way to fix this?

I can´t find any definitive solutions, however reading through a few threads on Reddit regarding similar issues gives tips to try and remove any installed mods, one by one, and then reload the game to see if it starts. A few users mentions the "biomes o plenty"-mod to be a cause of this issue, at least a while back. Other users states that if they just wait the game actually launches after a while even if it takes a long time sometimes. Will see if I can find something more! // Chris

@@GetThereFaster The game stops responding immediately after you click on the world, i'm not exactly sure, it depends until you start clicking everywhere, then you get the Java binary stops responding error. (Once I left it for 2-3 hours, it stayed the same at the frozen "Reading world data..." screen)

@@Diamond_Dominik It does sound like something has not gone right when recovering the world that might cause it to not load. I am unfortunately very unsure to what it could be. I would recommend putting the question out in the official Minecraft Support forum, here www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/java-edition-support. You can usually find solutions to most issues here, so hopefully someone is sitting on more info regarding this and can help you to actually solve it. Sorry :-/ // Chris

@@MythicalAbyss Try downloading the free version of Recuva ( www.ccleaner.com/recuva ) and do a search for all files in the Minecraft-world-folder to see if you can recovery the world file. Or at least the level.dat to get a hold of the seed to be able to recreate the world from that :-) // Chris

Wish I had some more insight on that specific mod :-/ I can´t really find any instructions for things to test here either, other than that the general recommendation is to create a backup before installing any mods. However that´s not at all helpful here and also does nothing in case you´ve played with the mod for a long time :-/ I´d say your best bet would be to ask in the Issues-section for the mod, here: github.com/CaffeineMC/sodium-fabric/issues Hope you can find a way to solve it! // Chris

Thanks for the simple and easy to follow instructions, Chris - you are LEGEND. I had to go back a couple of saves (about 5 days) to find valid level.dat's, but it was well worth the small inconvenience of returning to my previous location (4 year, 8+ GB v1.16 world), where I found everything exactly as it was when the dreaded BSOD crashed my 'puter. I'll just mention that I did find it necessary to copy the session.lock from the same save, to make it work.

I had to use method 2 to restore my saved game and it worked a treat. Absolute life-saver :) All of my stuff was still in the chests upon restoring my game. I only had the mild inconvenience of losing items and the experience that my avatar was holding (I also had my achievements wiped, again not a big loss). It was very similar to dying in the game and having my items de-spawn. I was delighted to have everything else restored :)

Hey! Thank you for all the help, but I'm still stuck after trying both of these methods. The first time I tried to rename the folder as level.dat from level.dat_old the folder didn't show up, and the second time I tried by pasting all of the old world files into a new one it didn't work either. I had shut down my computer after thinking it saved the world last night because it was loading slowly, but maybe some files were still being processed and because they were in the middle of that my world went missing. Is there anything else you know that I could try? Please help!

I tried the second method since the first one didnt work and for some reason my level.dat file isn't showing up in NBTExplorer for that specific world, even though it shows up for all my other ones

Hi! It might be that the level.dat-file has gotten corrupted and therefore cannot be read correctly by the program. You could try an online NBT-explorer alternative, like this one: irath96.github.io/webNBT/ , to see if that picks up the file (just drag and drop it into the browser window). // Chris

Thank you very much. The second on works for me. Luckily I saved my coordinates from my base so I could easily find my way back. The good thing is that all my items in the chests were still there. The bad thing, my inventory was completely deleted and since I just got back from caving, I probably had more stuff in my inventory than in my chests 😅.

Surprised to see that you have helped many people. Sadly for me, my world is gone... I did the two steps. I was playing in tlauncher. I heard that tlauncher has a virus so ig thats why it didnt work for me. I spended 200+ days in that world. Anyway, keep up the good work❤❤❤

It's completely wiped, the fixed version I was playing on is on Day 0 with no builds anywhere that I had previously as well as my inventory being wiped. Please get back to me as soon as you can, my last "Backup" is from 8/29/2023 it seems. And I have built an INSANE amount of things within then and now I do not want to lose... Do you have any idea on how to recover?

update. I re-did what the video asked, turns out I just lost the world again. I have all my builds, but lost my inventory again. RIP. I suppose the real question is, is there a way to ensure this does not happen again?

@@poopydingus Hm, that´s really odd that it happens again and again. Are you using any mods or anything that could effect the installation somehow? Other than that, the best course of action is definitely to make a new backup of the whole world-folder after every play-session. Very tedious, but better than loosing the world I suppose. Appreciate the response! I am not using any plugins nor mods. It's happened twice now. Once around the 550 in game day mark and the last time at 640 or something similar. Pretty irritating but it's worth it I suppose. Worst part is getting all my armor/enchants/tools as well as how my big map of the world keeps dissappearing. Reloading the world makes it so the map is "Unknown Map" and is blank.@@GetThereFaster

I don’t have a level.dat old and I still couldn’t get my world back, because somehow the “old” is replaced by the Microsoft symbol and is named “level” instead of “level.dat.old” should I rename that or still keep that?

Before I saw this video, I had created a copy of my lost world and deleted the original, leaving the copy. I did the second instruction, first, in another video, but it didn't work. I tried your first technique, with copying. Again it didn't work. I have two questions: do I have to use the original map instead of the copied one, or do I have to go to the website mentioned in the second technique?

Hi! You should be able to use the copy just as well as the original file (however before you start, do make a copy of the copy just in case something goes wrong!). If you mean the link to NBTExplorer, then yes, you will need the program to be able to see the seed-phrase to complete the steps. Hopefully it will work! // Chris

Hi! If you actually deleted the world (even though accidentally) there probably is no sign of it in any of the folders. My best bet here would be to use a file recovery software (like Recuva, which has a free version: www.ccleaner.com/recuva ) to try and search for the folder and files and see if it can be recovered. Is there any chance that you know how to restore a world on a macbook? i opened my minecraft app, it had logged me out, so I logged back in and my world was just gone. I had a replica of Grian’s mansion I’ve been building for three years that was nearly finished. I’m absolutely devastated

A problem did occur for me while trying to get a world I recently lost back. I was in NBTExplorer and clicked on the backup folder with my original world in it. But when I clicked on the file, the Level.dat and Level.dat_old were not there. On all my other saves however, they were there. It was just this file. Is there anything that I could do to fix this?

Hi! Odd, it might be some issues with NBTExplorer or something. If you haven´t tried both the installable version and the standalone one of the program, I would start with testing both to see if any one of them produces different results. If the level.dat file is avaible in Windows Explorer I would also recommend just dropping it into this online NBT Editor, to see if that one picks it up correctly: irath96.github.io/webNBT/ Hope you´re able to solve it! // Chris

I lost my world when I switched devices playing from one pc to another and then back, iv started a new world but I miss my old one a lot, if I do the first method will it delete this new world that I have made as I am trying to recover my old one?

Hi! No, you can have basically how many worlds you want in the launcher to pick from. However, before doing anything, I'd recommend going into the %appdata% folder and just make a backup copy of all your current worlds, _just_ in case something does gets messed up in any way. Then you can always just copy the backed up world back to restore it again :-) // Chris

Hi man, looks like you helped a lot of people and I'm having the same problem... Kind of. Instead of my world disappearing totally, they just aren't showing up in the next update. For example, I was going from 1.19.3 to 1.19.4 but none of 1.19.3 world's are showing in 19.4 after going into 19.4. the singleplayer world's page is empty. Because I had forge 1.19.3 I decided to use the normal 1.19.3 verion. Just vanilla with no mods because I though that Minecraft would pick up it's a world and then update it to the newest update. But NO! I can't find it, I'll see if this video's works but pls tell me how to fix it 😊

Hi! Am I understanding it correctly that you have used Forge on 1.19.3 and you then want those worlds in the vanilla Minecraft 1.19.4? If that is the case I think (but I´m not 100% sure) that it´s not possible since vanilla Minecraft correctly won´t recognize them, since loading them into normal vanilla would have a huge potential of breaking the worlds. Tried googling a bit to convert modded worlds to vanilla, but from what I could find, it does not seem to be possible :-/ Again, I might be completely wrong so there´s definitely a chance it can be solved. Hi! As far as I can see there has been no changes to the file save system from 1.18 to 1.19 so the procedure should be the same. A little more info can be found here (minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Tutorials/Recover_corrupted_saved_world_data). hey i dont know if you are still helping out on this youtube video. but i have a problem. so both the world files "back up and new world 3" have the level.dat. but the NBTExplorer cant seem to see them when i look at the file. but when i look at the other worlds, they have level.dat files. idk man im confused edit: OMG NVM TYSM BRO ive had a creative world that ive been making for the past week that has to do with a lot of custom armor stands and door animations. and once i heard my custom music play BRO I GOT SO HAPPY TYSM

Hi! Do either the first one (NBTExplorer-2.8.0.msi) or the second one (NBTExplorer-2.8.0.zip). The .msi-one is an installable version of the program and the .zip-one is a version that does not have to be installed, but instead just unpacked to any folder on the computer and run from there :-) // Chris

Hi! Hm, map.dat-files seems to be a kind of all-in-one-files that _should_ contain all the files needed to store a complete level. From what I understand you should be able to extract the contents of a map-file and there should be a level.dat (and the other files) resting inside. Have not tried this though. Not sure if it's because it was a 1.8.9 world or something, but all the items in my chests were still there!! And I luckily had almost all my best gear in a chest at the time. Thanks!! My hardcore world is saved!! Furthermore, all my villagers and my precious baby zombie in full gold armor named Rare Cheeto were still there too!

I think this works but every time I get off and hop on to Minecraft again, it deletes it again and I have to repeat this process. Do you have any ways to counteract it? 🙏

There´s basically only two ways this can occur. One is if you quit the game while it´s saving, like with Alt + F4 (+ have a bit of bad luck). The other being that your hard drive is becoming faulty casing the game to not being able to save data correctly. Been trying to search around a bit but these two seems to be the main reasons this happens. Does it happen every single time you start a new world or just very often? // Chris

Hi! Hard to say exactly what could be wrong. There is always a chance that the level.dat-file actually has been corrupted to the point where the seed have been corrupted too. Which I suppose is the only way it could not work at all, since that´s the only thing you are re-using from the old world. If you haven´t already tried to do it a second time with method 2, I would try one more time just to rule out that the seed got copied wrongly or something like that. Otherwise I am unfortunately unsure what exactly could be the culprit here :-/ // Chris

The online-service is for the actual level.dat-file, not the whole folder so that´s probably why nothing shows up. Is the folder completely empty or does it have other files and folders, but just not the level.dat-files? // Chris

unfortunately a random blue screen of death caused my 2,500 day hardcore world to corrupt like this, luckily since its that long I am able to just get all the loot again as the first fix didn't work.

@@thewalkingfox012 The blue screen of death would only affect the world that is currently open. I personally ended up starting a new world. I started backing up my main worlds in case this happened again while playing it, so that I could lessen the amount lost by just loading a previous save. As for the solution, the ones presented in the video should do the trick most of the time but in some circumstances it may not work.
