Soft gas pedal? A stretched out throttle cable in a Ford or Mazda can cause that.Take a look at your throttle cable. See if the pedal moves up and down and has "slack". If so, your throttle might not be opening all of the way so you are not getting full power. If you floor the car the throttle might only be open 80%.
Watch the video to see how a few wire ties can restore this lost power!

This video is 9 years old and still helping people ! I'm an old guy who isn't a wrench but still works on his own stuff as much as possible. I bought an 02 ranger that needs much tlc . I was just looking at the throttle cable 2 days ago trying to figure out how to adjust the slack out of it ? This is how !
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 10 жыл бұрын
Haha, someone told me to close my eyes and just listen to some of the things I say hahaha... It did not increase fuel economy by anything noticeable, but it did improve performance (acceleration specifically). The spring is not weakened, the metal throttle cable that opens up the intake is stretched. That spring helps account for some of the stretching, but after enough stretching over time, you need more than the spring.

Yea, Ive heard about this before but never paid much attention until recently when we were helping my dad move and was pulling a trailer with my '03 4.0 Ranger (currently 69k miles) loaded with stuff and furniture. Really had to press the pedal hard to get into any power and to downshift when climbing a hill. Mind had quite a bit of slack once I looked at it and a couple zip ties made a world of difference. Very worthwhile simple mod once you twist yourself into a pretzel to reach up under there......lol

I had the same problem. Every time ac comp running, the engine lost its power and it came back once ac comp entered idle state. It's been sometime, i noticed the gas line was slacking, not tight, quite loose actually. But no idea how to fix it. Till 2 days ago this vid popped out on my youtube recommended vids. Now the problem is solved. Thank you ChrisFix. Your videos are totally helpful and not only help me save, but also avoiding me from useless effort of fixing not at the right place. Thanks a bunch. I have loss of power in my 2005 ford explorer. the mechanic said that we're going to start with the egr valve and intake manifold gasket. my uncle replaced the egr valve. we also cleaned the throttle body (which is electronic. it doesn't have a manual pulley system like the one in this video) I also cleaned the MAF sensor. the car ran better for 2 days. did it run better because of one of the items I cleaned and I should replace either the MAF sensor or throttle body? or should I continue to replacing the intake manifold gasket. it seemed like my mechanic was guessing when they said "we're going to start from there"
@xenonmorphcoleman4298
@xenonmorphcoleman4298 Жыл бұрын
I know on newer ford's the throttle bodies are horrible, I am replacing them daily. I would suggest to start with that. However if you are doing this on a budget I would suggest to start with the cheapest thing the mechanic said.

+Rhett Peters, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason, but I have a 2001 as well. You should have no problem going up any road hill at any speed. Great idea. My truck had the same issue. Not only are you missing some power due to more restricted airflow but, if it's bad enough, the ECU won't ever go into Wide Open Throttle mode where it optimizes the air fuel ratio for maximum power and also can do things like shut off the A/C compressor. Most any scan tool will show live TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) values and mine was only going to 80% with the gas pedal on the floor. Ford sadly decided to make the entire throttle cable/linkage non-adjustable, the cable stretches over time, and I don't think mine was even opening all the way when it was brand new. It's a bad design.
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 11 жыл бұрын
Well, I would get someone to press on the gas and let go as you watch the throttle body open and close... It might be dirty/gunky in the throttle body which prevents it from closing all of the way... That would be my first guess

1992 Mazda E2000 SD series truck motor home. I switched to BP and changed the fuel filter. Originally built with a non pressure petrol cap I replaced the pressurised one which was causing fuel to get into the charcoal canister. (three times and mechanics could not work out why this happened} Research by me indicated I needed to get a petrol cap that breathed and not cause pressure build up inside the tank. Goes as good as new now and pulls like a champion.

You should put one bigger one on. It has a stopper on it. Make sure it goes all the way until the stopper hits on the throttle body. That's close enough but there's just a weee bit more you can get out of it
