This is my just restored 1969 Honda Z50 K1 mini trail. The build date was 12/69 and the restored date was 12/09. 40 years later it's new again.

This was my first new motorcycle. Same color too. Hours of fun in the woods of Southern Indiana at 10 years of age. We would camp out and ride all night since our Hondas had headlights. A sleeping bag, some matches and a can of Beenie Weenies for supper and we were set. I go to bike events in an RV today. It was more about the bikes when we were kids than it is today.

Beautiful restoration. My Dad bought me that exact bike (new) when I was 9 yrs. old. Great memories.

Wow ... super restoration ... love that bike .. reminds me of my youth when I would drool over the early Hondas ... and of course the big brother Brit bikes too. I had many back in the 60's. Getting the bug once again ( I am now 63 ) to relive my youth by picking up a vintage bike. Meanwhile, with your list of things you did to the bike ... I kept seeing dollar signs .. it must a cost you a heap a dough and a thousand man-hours !

It takes extreme patience and determination to complete a project like yours. I have done many, 68's-72's. The restoration is what I enjoy the most. Very well done, and done RIGHT!. Don't stop bringing them back to life.

Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for bringing back the memories! My brother and I bought one new from the Honda dealer in Warren, Michigan. As I remember, the purchase price was $249 plus tax. Imagine that! Again, thank you for posting.

Very nice work, you should be proud. Yellow/Silver 1969 Honda Z50 K1 sits in my office that I restored to a "10". Also have 2 1966/1967 CB77's and a 1963 step-through 50. Love that blue color.

@truste012 Honda sold a pile of these little bikes and it's great to see there still a large amount of survivors out there. they were always reliable. I remember riding mine as a kid, I rode it all the time and besides replacing the chain, sprockets and adjusting the points from time to time it was trouble free. Glad you like my restoration. Thanks for posting.

Thank you very much! I'm self employed and my spot is a specialty repairs shop. I do all types of welding, fabrication, machining and automotive work but all these things cross over to my hobby which is restoration. I would include restoration as my work as well but no one wants to pay what it cost to do this sort of thing so I stick to the basics. I guess the answer is yes it's my hobby lol. No I don't think I'd sell it YET. Thanks for your questions and comments :)

@sealsamster Thank you very much. Yes there are some portions of the motor painted and some are buffed. The wheels were bead blasted, primed and then painted base/clear. It was a fun project but very time consuming. Glad you enjoyed seeing my wing as well. I haven't seen a bike i haven't liked yet:)

Thanks. Back in 1970 my dad would put my Z50 in the back of his car and take me over to a long dirt road and let me ride for miles while he followed me in the car. It was the best time in my life. Yes the memories :) :)

@HarrysHighPants Thanks. Glad you enjoyed seeing the completed product. You can see the process in my other video on my channel. As for the headlight cap. I have a tool that I make for various jobs that I used. It's like a roller and I can put more of a roll on the cap fitting the contour of the headlight housing better. You might be able to do the same with a piece of pipe in a vise. Good luck with your bike and thanks for posting!

I have another video of this bike on my channel that shows the steps I took to restore it. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. Enjoy your project! I've been to Montreal many times. I love that city. Cheers. Paul in Newfoundland.

I Have a 1969 Honda Z50A K1. It is the Honda Yellow and silver. I have had it in my possesion for about 5 years now. I had inherited it after my grandfather passed away sadly in '05. The bike hasn't ran since '07. We just tried everything to get her going, took the carb to school to get cleaned, completely dismantled the bike. and of all things, she had a bum spark plug. We put a new one in on the July 1st weekend. She fired on her second kick. I had to sen the tank to Langley BC to be cleaned.

Well sir you and I could have some great conversations because my memories are very much the same. Most die hard bikers these days might not admit it but most of them started off on Honda's. Yes the bug. I know it very well ;) I'm 53 and when I grow up I want to be a fire truck lol. This Z50 was the most costly restoration I did out of all the bikes in our collection. I used all NOS parts. It was also the first kind of bike my Dad bought me so It has a special place in my heart. Thanks.

@conantdog No doubt about it, they were years ahead of themselves on the design of these little bikes. @Violinsarecool1 Congratulations on your new/old Mini Trail. There a bit of work to do but very rewarding once completed. I had the cap left over from when I restored my 1966 Cub. I had to modify it slightly due to the smaller light housing but it wasn't very much to it. I have seen them on Ebay. Just search for C100 or Honda Cub and you might see one. Good luck with your restoration. Thanks for your kind words on my bike and thanks for commenting. :)

If you would take the time and look at my video called Gasoline Alley you would see that all my restorations or custom work ends up in our museum. Each bike is rebuilt from the crank out and tested before being placed in the museum. The bikes have no fuel in them and no acid in them when put on display. To get running just add fuel and acid and kick start. These video's are here simply to encourage and help others see how the rebuilds go and the end result.

Thanks sixspeedSS. This would have been the same model of bike and year my Dad bought me back in "70. It was a year old then and loved the beast. I was always to the understanding that Saphire Blue was the only blue there was BUT I could be wrong. There are companies in the US that will supply the paint kits and state there the same as the original color but I don't know if they are for sure. In this case I did my own mixing and everyone who sees it loves it. See my other vid of this bike?

@justin1138 It could be licensed but I never licensed it. It has a license plate bracket on it. I only restored it to add to my little collection. My daily rider is a GL1800 GoldWing so climbing off of that and getting on a 49cc Z50 wouldn't do it for me at this point in my life. Thanks for your comments and question. If you ride. Ride safe!
